This video talks you through the difference between sterilisation and pasteurisation. You'll find out why it matters so much when you grow mushrooms and why some mushrooms growers choose one method over the other.
We also go into the detail with a comparison in yield and biological efficiency between the two methods.
We discuss how the following aspects will all influence which method to use:
- your choice of mushroom substrate
- if you use supplementation
- the mushroom varieties that you grow
- your equipment
- scale & budget

@@ebtsoby Not really. They are comparing a hardwood substrate to a softwood substrate like straw. We already know hardwoods produces more BE. That's why we use hardwoods, not softwoods like pine and straw. Pasturise and run a lil bit higher spawn rate to take over faster.

Guys, the most important part of Pasteur's process isn't elevating the temperature to x or y degrees. It's subsequently lowering it to a radically lower temperature, with the variation being the final strike on microbiological life.

Pretty sure i saw that just sterilization adds yield done in experiments on non supplemented substrates. Not sure by how much , because there are many ways , species and types of sterilization and pasteurization . Also sterilization has a very key benefit of reducing contam. I do both sterilization and pasteurization and I found my contam goes down by a lot using sterilization. Tossing blocks is the biggest waste of energy and just feels bad. This is also why its more consistent , so its important to consider - trust me id rather soak than pressure cook. Also bio efficiency is great for straw because its light and carry so much water. But it takes up a lot more space. So it's also important to consider that if you are a grower limited by space , denser might be better .

2 studies showed that adding caco3 calcium carbonated (which acts as a buffer for ph) and gypsum calcium sulfate (makes the substrate surface better ) so yeah consider using them and do not use hydrated lime or lime which is calcium hydroxide ca(oh)2 and good luck brother :)

Hi guys, I have asked a question before in several places but never got an answer, concerning the pressure of pressure cookers here in UK. After this video I`m compelled to ask again in the hope someone has an answer. I recently bought a well reviewed pressure cooker, which has a sterilisation setting. I found out only afterwards that European/UK pressure cookers have an lower maximum working pressure than American ones; around 12 psi. I`m quite disappointed that most videos cite 15 psi as a base line for sterilisation. I gather from this video that my cooker will merely `super-pasteurise` my substrate. I wondered if I could off-set this deficit by adding time to the cook? Any ideas, or will I just have to save for an All American? Thanks for your great work.

12 psi is perfectly fine (google shows many discussions when asked if 12 psi is okay to sterlize) just leave for 90 min to 2 hrs

@@Juniperlaneestatesales Hi. Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did read many articles and even scientific papers on the subject but all suggest that 12psi would `super-pasteurise` and not sterilize.

Yes, just takes longer. As a sidenote superpasteurization refers to a technique where pasteurization temperatures are held for 12-24 hours. Works much like sterilization.

After cold pasturization and let the material drip, do you need to rinse it? When you add supplement to enrich the nitrogen content, is the supplement in whatever form, does it need to be sterilized because you already pasturized substrate and an added supplement ?

1:00 do you have any experimental data to back that up or something? I couldn't find any sources starting that the simple fact of boiling a closed container increases its temperature above boiling due to the pressure, and from my understanding that's impossible.
@alexandervlaescu9901
@alexandervlaescu9901 2 жыл бұрын
This is a really simple physics fact. Boiling , freezing , etc points are affected by two major things : temperature and pressure. Normally when you freeze or boil something you do it in an environment of one atmosphere (normal atmospheric pressure). If you were to have a higher pressure boiling and liquidizing something would be far easier.

i believe temps don't need to be 121 for sterilisation. atmospheric sterilisation for longer times at lower temps also works.
@viktormorris194
@viktormorris194 3 жыл бұрын
What you're referring to is super pasturization. It functions similar to sterilization when applied to bulk substrate bc it kills, say 99.5-99.9% of contaminants. The mycelium can usually handle the rest. But it's not *technically* sterilized bc of that small amount of bacteria that could survive
@rfldss89
@rfldss89 2 жыл бұрын
For sterilisation you need to reach temps high enough to destroy the most resilient microbial spores. Generally thats considered to be botulinum spores for which you have to reach 120°C for a certain amount of time. Maybe colloquially sterilisation is used in a different way, but we should really stick to technical definitions to avoid confusion.
