What is the DEFINITION of RENDER? What does RENDER MEAN? What even is RENDERING? DID YOU KNOW, that using RENDERING you could Export Video in Adobe Premiere Pro FASTER (up to 25x or more) ?! SO, if you want to export 4k videos faster - you should learn how to RENDER and use RENDER PREVIEWS!
In this Tutorial, we discuss HOW to Render Video in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2020, what RENDER and RENDERING is / means, and WHY it is SO important to your entire Editing Process.
As well as the knowledge we gain about Rendering, we will also know How to EXPORT 4K / UHD / 1080p Videos 25x while still maintaining the highest possible quality video!
The definition of "rendering" usually refers to the actions of converting and compressing our video footage, photos and other assets - into a single compressed video file appearance. We render so that we can see our video edit including colour grading, transitions and other video effects before we hit export.
Essentially, the meaning and purpose of Rendering is to enable us to see what our Video will look like with our added effects and changes, without exporting. Sometimes it just makes video editing easier, other times it is necessary to render just in order to see the playback of your Drone 4K footage or 6K Footage alone.

-------
---- WHEN TO RENDER:
Notice that there are a few differently coloured lines above your footage.
Green, Yellow and Red or BLANK
These are relatively straightforward - Green means that your footage has rendered preview files associated with the assets below. If you change ANYTHING underneath the green bar whether it be on the clip or even bringing text in, it will shift to being Yellow or RED.
The Yellow bar is a reminder that there are no render files for this section, so Premiere will do it’s best to playback the clip in real-time, it is possible that it can playback fine in Real-Time *ADD INFOBOX* without being rendered.
However, if it is RED, that means that you have applied something intensive to the footage. It is a warning that Premiere probably won;t be able to play that back in Real-Time.
Before you spend the time render and create previews - you should know what you are creating in order to save computer space and preserve your video quality.
---- RENDER PREVIEW SETTINGS
I typically prefer using Quicktime for my projects because it is a way higher quality. If you are not looking for details or are limited by file storage or computing power, you can just keep I-Frame. HOWEVER, we are going to use Quicktime for the Render files because with it, I am going to change your life and the way you export videos.
My new favourite process here is Using the AppleProRes 422 Proxy. It is the smallest file (double check with DNxHR) and still holds a TON of the resolution. So let’s select that and then check our frame size. So in order to export 25x faster, your previews HAVE to match your intended output. So for this we will RENDER AT MAX and set our sequence width and height to match our desired output, in this case, 4K (3840 x 2160).
We will hit ok and it will delete all of our already rendered files.
---- DIFFERENT WAYS TO RENDER
-- RENDER Effects (only) --
Go up to SEQUENCE → Render Effects in to out
Or with default keyboard shortcuts, you can just hit Enter
This method will only render the effects that you have applied to your footage, essentially the RED scenes.
- RENDER In and Out-
If you only want to render a section - like a few clips, you can set an in and an out point, then go back up to SEQUENCE → RENDER IN TO OUT
If you didn’t set an in to out, it will render the entire timeline
This WILL render both your Red and Yellow, and create previews for your whole timeline!
-- RENDER Selection --
If you just have a single clip or file that is Red or is troublesome and needs render files, you can highlight it then go back up to SEQUENCE → RENDER SELECTION
REMEMBER TO DELETE YOUR VIDEO PREVIEWS AFTER YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR PROJECT!

IF YOUR COLOURS LOOK WASHED OUT WHEN EXPORTING: - Download this LUT: assets.adobe.com/public/a0b635a3-6bc3-452b-5f7d-c997b9b36cf5 - When Exporting, go to the Effects tab (on the left) and apply the LUT

Thanks a lot for the video. Def helps. I chose 422 HQ for preview renders and exported with the same. The resulting file is huge 91GB for 14m. Can you share your process to go from QuickTime previews to H264 and still get the fast export times? I realize I can do my final export as H264, but when using the QuickTime previews that final render will be much longer. Maybe I need to select a preview file that is compatible with H264? Thanks a lot. Great channel.

Amazing video mate! I did as you said in the Sequence settings and when I go to export, I don't have those Quicktime - Uncompressed settings. If I was to choose h.264, which is what I normally choose, would that affect my rendering time? I use Prem Pro to render and export my gameplay videos that I've recorded, and the bars are always yellow. I also normally export them in HDR.

Hey Colin! Thanks so much for this... Should I still use prores 422 for preview settings, if I want to export H264 MP4 format? Does it still reduce file size while exporting quicker? Or is it easier to export as a ProRes 422 and then convert from .mov to MP4 (using media encoder)?
@ColinDougan
@ColinDougan 3 жыл бұрын
I've been meaning to make a followup video that answers this - Sponsors took a while haha. You can either: 1. Bring the large Exported MOV file into a new sequence and export with your preferred settings (this will be faster than trying to just export the whole unrendered video as MP4) 2. Use the Quicktime trick of Compressing your video. I think I put that in my Exporting Video though... (I.e. open up your video in Quicktime Player, go to File --> Export as --> (4K/1080/whatever you need and change the method to be H.264 - new update)

@ColinDougan
@ColinDougan 3 жыл бұрын
Hey hey! First of all - thank you for your kind words! What I typically do is; Render in Quicktime and Export (using previews) the massive File FIRST, then I bring it into Premiere, into it's own sequence and RE-EXPORT it to an H.264 to keep it compressed (still really high quality but also .mp4) because it is still faster than trying to export to entire original sequence! If you want to make sure that you're exporting your H.264 files properly, I would highly recommend checking out the longer EXPORT video on my channel, as it goes over a few key mistakes I've been making over the last few years! (P.s. - Sorry for the delay on this repsonse!)

Dude this is an amazing video. You are seriously the GOAT and deserve so many more views. Please, keep the videos coming! Question: The only part that concerns me is at 7:57 where you say that this will only work "if you're going to be rendering your sequence AND exporting with the EXACT SAME file type." So, how do I know if I'm rendering and exporting with the exact same file type? What do you mean by file type exactly? Is it the format, preset, dimensions, etc.? I appreciate your help dude!
@ColinDougan
@ColinDougan 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your words bro! You're a legend! To answer your question: Yes. So, let's say you set your Sequence Render Preview settings as: Quicktime - Animation with Dimensions of 720 x 1280 but want your final video to be Quicktime Pro-Res 422 at 4K (3840 x 2160), You're not going to be able to "Use Previews" in your export, as Premiere will now have to re-render your entire video in the Higher Resolution since your Preview files were in the wrong codec with the wrong Dimensions. Also, feel free to check out the in-depth Exporting video I did if you're not 100% confident with what settings you should be exporting with! The Pro-Res 422 is relatively High-Quality and re-exporting it again at 4K in Quicktime is a great way to compress the video but preserve a lot of detail, but there is Also Pro-Res 422 HQ, LT, etc...

I have really enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot so thank you- that said I have not quite figured out the best way to deal with my projects as I don’t know what you shoot, or what your settings are. For instance if your are shooting 6K and record to ssd in pro res or something that would be quite different than me as I am filming on an A7SIII, in 4K at a frame rate of 23.976 for the most part to SD card which records to as an .mp4. With that said do I do previews in pro res 422 and have to same settings for export then if I need to compress for KZfaq do it through media encoder? If no then what should I select for my preview files? Please help me here- I have been back and for lut trying to avoid 13 hour exports!

Great video! one question I have is, do you break your preferred export settings i.e VBR 2 and .mp4 to use this render method. In your export video, you don't use QuickTime or CBR but with the pre-render settings you will need to match the QuickTime settings in the final export and the least compressed setting. Do you have that right? I have hit a wall with a long export that I want to maximise quality while limiting any issues with youtube. Thanks in advance Colin 🤘

this method is something that I use when sending drafts to clients (anticipating revisions) because I don't want to have to wait through hours of exporting just because we slightly changed a logo size, or line of text - when I have my final, you have two options: 1. Take this massive pre-render, drop it into premiere and do a final grading and export as H.264 2. Export your main timeline, and ignore your drafts

@@ColinDougan Thanks, mate. I was hoping this method might help take some of the pre-rendering time out of the Final export but, I guess I will need to suck it up and export my timeline as I would normally.

Thanks so much for this. Question though, have you been able to Smart Render and include the Gamma Correction LUT on export? I am having a hard time finding a work around, and my colors are washing out…

Hey Davis! Sorry for the delay. Depending on the Version of software you are running, you might run into that issue - here is the link to download the LUT. assets.adobe.com/public/a0b635a3-6bc3-452b-5f7d-c997b9b36cf5 When exporting, go to the EFFECTS tab on the left and select this LUT (wherever you save it to) and it should compensate for that :)
