I think Max was growing on Vincent as well. Unfortunately Vincent was going to kill Max at the end of his mission. Remember Vincent said anonymity is how he survives & Max knows what he looks like. Also remember detective Fanning mentioned that months ago a cab driver was found murdered after several other unexplained murders had been committed in one night hours apart. My guess is that was Vincent's handy work🤔
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
Vincent definitely respected Max. He's a good guy put-upon by assholes who visits his mom in the hospital every day despite her never-ending criticism. He also had the guts to steal Vincent's bag and toss it, putting his own life at great risk in order to serve his values and protect others. Vincent lives by his code, but Max has one, too. But, yeah, Vincent was definitely gonna kill and frame Max at the end, no matter what, because Vincent's code is the mission comes first.

There is a lot of things in this movie. Connections, metaphors, foreshadowing, etc When Max is giving her a ride at the beginning and they have 0 traffic, Max says he "Gets lucky with the lights." In his shootout with Vincent the lights on the train go out for a moment. That's when Vincent's training and how he shoots fails him. He fails to see Max move and you can see his execution wound pattern (Mozambique) in the bullet holes on the door. He missed Edit: Also the reason Vincent couldn't reload was becuase that is not his weapon. He lost his in the crash. He stole it from the guard. So after his stolen one ran dry, without thinking, he instinctively went for a reload but when presented with no magazine he then realized no spare magazine is available.
@Josh95x
@Josh95x 3 жыл бұрын
That foreshadowing is a huuuge stretch. Also, if you look closely you can see the first mag drop, then he did have a magazine to load, but he dropped it because he got shot. After he got shot he realised that there was no point in finishing the mission anyway and simply sat down and accepted it
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 жыл бұрын
@@Josh95x "Foreshadowing is a stretch". There are easier ways to say "I know nothing of the work of Michael Mann". Vincent has another magazine. It's not the magazine for the weapon he's holding. And a huge part of Vincent's character is that he always finishes the job. Adapt. Darwin. I Ching and all that. If you're going to nitpick at others, pay attention first.

Never mentioned, is the void in Vincent, notice he's impatient, looking at his watch, until Max's mother says they're lovely flowers, then he actually starts to take interest in things, even that complement is enough. Max's mentions this later, and it's part of the weakness in both men, Max's overbearing, annoying mother, is to Vincent, better than no mother at all.

Michael Mann is well-known for his portrayal of villains. Heat and Public Enemies are another great examples. There is no black or white but a very big grey area between the characters. Max's development as a character is mainly due to Vincent's ideas.

Collateral is my favorite film of the last 20 years. It’s so unique and seamless. This is both Michael Mann’s best film and Tom Cruise’s best performance and both deserved Oscar nominations. Also, this movie actually put Jamie Fox on the map and he was nominated Best Supporting Actor. The 2 big themes of this film that you alluded to are (1) Vincent and Max slowly taking on traits of each other as the movie progresses. Vincent becomes more human and relatable and Max toughens up. (2) The film is filled with coincidences and foreshadowing: Vincent ending up in Max’s cab right after he meets Annie and she’s his last target, the 2 cops getting the call to the crime scene of Vincent’s first kill which inadvertently saved their lives, Fanning in the same elevator as Vincent and Max at the hospital, Max telling Annie early on “I got lucky with lights” and the lights on the train went out long enough to help him in the final duel with Vincent, and Vincent dying the way he described at the beginning. And none of this feels like an insult to viewer intelligence but an actual smartly crafted film.

Collateral and Training Day are very similar in a lot ways. Both movies have a bad guy and good guy as the 2 stars who connect and have great chemistry, the bad guy tries to frame the good guy for murder and also tried to kill him, the good guy gets tougher as the movie wears on and the bad guy gets more sloppy, and the good guy eventually kills the bad guy. Also, both the bad guys have the lead roles, but the good guys actually have more screen time.

Good film choice. I love this film. Tom Cruise is always a hero, the good guy. You never see him play the villain. But he was such a narcissistic psychopath in this flick. He didn't buy flowers because of some sliver of humanity in his abused soul. He did that because that's what a son visiting his mom in the hospital is expected to do. Appearances. Attention to detail. Max was never going to get those hundred dollar bills. Ruffalo detailed the m.o. of a killer from an unsolved case where a cabbie was used for hits. Max would be killed when he had served his purpose. Good movie, good reactions. Another great Cruise movie is RAIN MAN, also starring Dustin Hoffman. I'd like to see you guys react to that. But i'd really like to see you do POINT BREAK with keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. The original (1991), not the remake, which sucks. Thanks -

If you look carefully, you can see that Vincent was reflexively doing his "concentrated two shots to the heart, one to the heart" approach. But because of the structure of the train doors, they all hit the metal in between the windows. Max's wild flailing actually meant he was less accurate and went through the windows, which weren't dead center.

When the first murder goes to hell, and Max is panicking, Vincent draws his gun and says, "red light max". When Max realises the failure of his life (thanks to Vincent), he puts his foot down in the car, Vincent says "red light". Love those little circles in the film.

I watched the making on this movie and Tom Cruise said that every character he has played. He has always given his characters a backstory. Which is a brilliant formula for any actor to do.

I believe it's stated in the movie by the cops that something similar happened to another cab driver who went nuts, killed a bunch of people, then killed himself, which I believe is to imply that Vincent had done this before and then killed the cab driver as a cover for his crimes. Also if you loved this movie you might want to check out other films by this director, Michael Mann, who also directed "Heat" (1995) and "Manhunter" (1986), great movies.

Such a crazy Action Crime film from Director Michael Mann, where an assassin for hire uses a taxi driver as her personal chauffeur to kill his targets, namely mob witnesses.

Very common misconception is that a handgun is easier to shoot than a rifle, but that is the total opposite in that case. dare you to try and hit something with a handgun : P thats why the moves in this by Cruise are dope and impressed back in the day. Mann always seems to like proper gun manipulation and techniques with firearms which i always appreciated.

You guys totally got sucked in by the superficial charms of a sociopath. The reason he got Max's Mom the flowers is not for her, it was because that's what you do when you visit someone in the hospital.

"guy gets his nap snecked..." I fuckin lost it for like 5 minutes dude.... That shit happens to me all the time... Spoonerisms, is what they are called. I also sometimes Transpose entire words in a sentence too, like, "I was trying to get an under the job table" or asking my friend, "hey, you want a glass of Alex, water?" But "nap snecked" is fookin classic!! I love it!

It's not that Vincent is devoid of emotion, it's just that he has the ability to turn off his empathy and sympathy when he is on the job. He can distance himself from his actions and feels little to no regret behind them. He's just the ultimate professional in his line of work. Outside of that, he's just a good guy with upstanding morals. He cares about other people, hates the general lack of empathy and care people have for each other, and goes above and beyond to try and help those who have some form of struggle. Just don't get in the way of his business. Besides the ending, this is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I think Vincent saw something of a redemption for himself in Max, a guy who he could have been. Maybe you could argue that keeping Max alive was a valid thing to do because he was a known quantity to help him through the mission for the night, but perhaps also after all those conversations Vincent felt like he wanted to help Max grow a little in the process.

To me, the flowers thing helped illustrate how Vincent was a sociopath. He doesn't feel things like normal people, such as remorse for killing. He pretends to help fit in. And that was the flowers for your mother thing was. To him, that's what a normal person would do. And pretending to be normal is his camouflage, so he does it. Granted, I'm a fan of deeper psychology in characters, so it's probably unlikely for most folks to see this connection like I did.

“Nah i just got lucky with the lights” max says this to both vincent and the lawyer and in the end it’s what saves him. Max again gets lucky with the lights, the lights cut out and he stumbles to the right firing through the door. vincent does his signature mozambique drill (2 in the chest one in the head) you can see the bullet holes in the door dead center where vincent WAS standing right before the lights cut…

After watching the film a second time to enjoy your review, I'm struck by the fact that the story appears to be left with many unresolved plot points: the one policeman that believed Max was innocent is dead, Xaxier Bardem's character has put a killer on Max's tail, and the policeman at the taxi crash site can identify Max as a potential murderer. I guess the female prosecutor can square things to some extent, although she's still on Bardem's kill list.

This was one of the best years for Jamie Foxx. Cause not only did he get an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for this movie but also best actor for Ray with the latter being the only one he won. After that he was now a full blown a lister making movies and occasionally making songs and no longer doing standup

1) That was Jason Statham as The Transporter delivering Vincent's mission package. It was a deliberate tie-in. 2) It was Vincent's plan from the start to frame and kill Max. Det. Fanning at one point comments on the similarity to a past case where a cab driver killed a bunch of people in one night, then himself, suggesting this is Vincent's typical M.O.

Absolutely love you guys and your reactions, so genuine, funny and lovable. Since you asked have you seen 'Tucker & Dale vs Evil'? Its about Two lovable hillbillies are headed to their "fixer-upper" vacation cabin to drink some beer, do some fishing but then something happens. Its a fun little movie. In some ways you two often remind me of the leads and their lovable good-natured vibes and I feel everyone needs a little tucker and dale in their lives. Anyway keep up the great reactions, they always bring a smile to my face .. unless the films are sad of course.
