A deep dive guide to how I organize my 4K and blu-ray movie collection.
This video is #10 in a series called "Back To Basics," where I discuss fundamental topics of interest to those in the early phases of their physical media journey. Think of it as sort of a "Collecting 101" series.
Note: My apologies for the fluctuations in brightness/contrast/image quality at a few points in this video (particularly during the "Macro View" chapter). I'll admit, it's some weird auto setting on my phone camera that I don't fully understand yet LOL!

It's always so interesting to see how people organize their collection, it seems to really vary person to person! For me I have my collection separated by dvds, blu rays/4Ks, and then my steelbooks. Each section is alphabetized so that I can find a title easily!
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz 15 күн бұрын
I totally understand... that seems to be the main benefit of alphabetizing, and Ii can absolutely appreciate why people like to go that route, even though it's not personally for me. Especially as our collections grow... it can get harder to find titles if they're not alphabetized. Thanks for watching!

The ultimate organisational goal should be to acquire enough money to implement the Blockbuster method - hiring a group of young adults periodically resort your entire collections into each persons 'Picks' for the week, while you there scratching your head wondering if there was any theme or guiding principle behind each person's row of titles.

I’ve reorganized my collection a few different ways over the years, and like you, I’m very limited on space and what I can do with it. I do prefer to have my box sets all in one section. I keep all of my boutique labels separated from each other. I have an entire cabinet just dedicated to steelbooks. I have one entire cabinet dedicated just to superhero films, and that includes live-action and animated. It’s fun switching it up sometimes. I do not alphabetize my collection either. You rock, Fuzz! 🤘🏻

Very cool Anthony! I totally get that about keeping all the box sets together... they look so damn nice together when you do it that way. So that's a bit of a sacrifice I've made in my own organizational style. And who knows... maybe somewhere down the line as my collection grows, I could decide to take that approach too. It's also great to hear from others out there who do not alphabetize, as I feel like it's very common among collectors to alphabetize to at least some degree. Thanks for watching and chiming in my friend! Great to see you.

also, i agree with what you said about alphabetizing - even as someone who likes to organize alphabetically. i rewatch films constantly and love hosting movie nights so my collection is in constant use. when i talk about my different favorites i feel like i'm running back and forth to grab them for people, especially with a collection of 1k+, but it works for me to find them easily as soon as i need them. definitely limits display ability though!

LMAO!😆 Well believe it or not, I actually swear like crazy off-camera. I try to keep it to a minimum most of the time in videos, but every now and then I decide to let one fly for fun... you know, just to keep people on their toes.🤣😉 And I can totally appreciate how alphabetizing might be helpful when you're trying to quickly find a specific title (especially in larger collections). But yeah, I think I like to have too much fun sometimes with re-arranging periodically and grouping certain themes together. So I like the flexibility of not alphabetizing for that reason. That said, I'll be curious to see how my organizational preference evolve as my collection grows. Anyway thanks for watching and commenting!

I keep mine alphabetized. It gets time consuming when adding films cuz the whole collection gets moved but it definitely helps me when I’m looking for stuff. I start out with movies A-Z, then it’s movies that names start with a number from lowest to highest. Third is movies that have either double or three different films in one case. And finally is tv series. Like I said a lot of work lol, and yes you got my last name perfect, not many people do hahaha
@TheOriginalFuzz

I totally understand where you're coming from with that. My dad is the same way... he likes to alphabetize his collection because it's a lot easier for him to find stuff. I think that's the main benefit to organizing that way -- especially once the collection starts to get very large. Right now I don't like alphabetizing, but if my collection were double the size it is now, I admit I might start to feel differently. Right now, I have most of my collection memorized, so I know where everything is. But if I had a lot more titles, it might be a little trickier to keep everything straight in my head. Thanks for watching and weighing in my friend! Great to see you!

@@Tetuanjet LMAO!😂 Yep I use an app for cataloging my titles as well. I use CLZ Movies from collectorz.com. It's like $20 a year or something. Fantastic app! Highly configurable. It has helped me so much in the past... it's especially good for making sure I don't accidentally buy something I already have (although that seldom happens for me anyway, because I have most of my collection memorized). It's also great from browsing if I'm trying to figure out what I want to watch that I haven't already seen since I bought the title. Great topic! I have 2,000 or so and don't alphabetize or go by label because I don't pick movies to watch that way; I break them up by genre like you, and that's how I go looking for a movie to watch, based on what I'm in the mood for. I also don't group 4Ks, Blu-rays and DVDs separately - I group everything together by genre - which makes some shelves look a little choppy but that's the way I like to keep them and makes sense to me.

It's always cool to see how others organize their collections. I agree, there's no right or wrong way to do it. As long as the collector knows where everything is at and likes it. I'm old school and separate the formats and then alphabetize within. I do genre with as for tv series, documentaries, music, ect...Now, lately have been thinking of taking non-movie titles like those genres and group the different formats together. Of course, at the moment, all my tv shows and music collection is boxed up since I ran out of shelf space.

On a serious note the major change to how I organise my collection is with DVD's with most now desleeved (if that's even a word?) and kept in A5 folders. The only boutique labels I keep separate is the HMV Premium collection, Arrow video & Powerhouse indicator.

Keeping my collection alphabetised works for me for a couple of reasons. First, because it makes it easier for me to keep track of everything in conjunction with the My Movies app on my phone and tablet as well as the My Movies Collection Management software on my PC. I am also in the process of ripping all of my Blu-rays (and most of my 4Ks) to a media server and being in alphabetical order helps me know where I am up to and what I need to rip next. Maybe once I have caught up with that, I will consider sorting by genre or something else. All of my 4K and Blu-ray movies are stored in 3 Billy bookcases from Ikea which are all next to each other. On the top of the shelves is my replica Hattori Hanzō sword from Kill Bill and a few standout boxsets from my collection on either side. The top row of shelves is where my Funko Pop collection currently resides, although I will move them elsewhere once I run out of room for movies which are on the remaining shelves. I also have another smaller set of shelves on the other side of the room which is where I keep my DVD movies, music discs (CDs, concert DVDs and Blu-rays), and TV shows regardless of format.

That's cool! I totally understand where you're coming from... it makes perfect sense why alphabetizing would work best for you right now. I'm gonna have to look into eventually ripping/backing up all my discs... that's a great idea. I'll have to invest in some additional solid-state drives. Very cool that you collect music physical media as well... I'm also a big music guy, so I have lots of music concerts and documentaries on blu-ray & DVD too (as well as my trusty CD collection). I just did a small reorganization and although I keep most groups alphabetical the one thing I do for franchises is place them in chronological order, especially helpful for James Bond films that are titled based on the books rather than ordered numerically. For Star Wars I keep them in order of Episode # and then chronological order of the stand-alone films placed at the end. I keep thinking of doing a full re-org based on genre but at over 3,000 titles it's a bit daunting.
@TheOriginalFuzz

Nice! Sounds like a good system for franchises. 3,000 - right on. Very respectable there lol! Though I can definitely appreciate how big of a task reorganizing a collection that size could be. Have you always sorted alphabetically, or is that something that you started doing later on as your collection grew? Because I can definitely understand how it might be easier to find titles in sizeable collections by going alphabetical. Thanks for watching and commenting!

My sci-fi section is the smallest as well. I too organize by genre but I have to keep it alphabetical for the family, but I go a step further most of my boutiques are in the room I record and all the standard Blu-ray’s and 4ks are downstairs in dedicated closet. Recently started collecting original movie posters. The usual fan favorites are extremely expensive, but lesser known movie you can get fairly cheaply. I’m burnt out on superhero movies all together except the greats Superman and Batman from the 70s & 80s Great video cool collection

I'm in the process of trying to reorganise my storage area to be able to cope with the size my connection has now griwn to and currently thinking about how to organise it. The simple way would be to put the labels that have spine numbers in their own sections (i.e. Criterion or Radiance) but then it makes it hard to find things by any real system as those are just the order the label put those releases out. Also some stuff I want to organise by actor it director (all Hitchcock films or all Van Damme films) and if these also form part of a label with spine numbers it then doesn't really work unless you relax the OCD and accept some spine numbers for a label will be stored elsewhere. Hitchcock is in the Criterion collection as well as Kino Lorber and studio labels for example. Then genre is another option but that's a lot of work to figure out what goes where when you do it from scratch for a sizeable collection. Does Aliens go in action, sci fi or horror? Ultimately it's all of those so that could be a challenge. I guess I'll work out out but obviously videos like this help to give ideas regarding how other people do it so thanks for taking the time to put this out.

I found that organization changes based on the size of your collection. Someone who has 1,000 titles will organize differently than somebody who has 10,000 titles. I've definitely seen a lot of changes in myself doing less alphabetizing and moving towards sorting by company like Criterion, Kino lorber, Arrow, vinegar syndrome, and such. I'm trying to keep numbered titles together like MVD rewind, Paramount presents, and vestron.
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz 15 күн бұрын
That's a very good point. I fully admit that I might feel differently if I had, say, 5,000 titles instead of just 1,200. As our collections get more sizeable, I can totally see how something like alphabetizing, for example, might be more preferred among some collectors... since I'm sure it gets exponentially harder to locate titles in large collections. Or like you said, sorting by labels/boutiques, etc. So it's entirely possible that as my collection grows, I may find I need to tweak my organizational style a bit to accommodate the growth. Thanks for watching and weighing in! Really appreciate it.

How do you handle stuff like the Goonies or Neverending Story? Do you have them in a Fantasy section, or Kid's/Family or some kind of 80s section? Do you have a Fantasy or Sword/Sorcery (Conan, Beastmaster, etc) section? Do you have a Western section? How do you handle animation? Separated by Pixar CGI and classical 2d style/Disney?

Well first off, I don't own a lot of fantasy or sword/sorcery movies, because I'm not really into that subgenre. I have a couple, like Beastmaster and Conan, but I just stick those in the action section. But basically, anything that is not action, sci-fi or horror, I keep them in a separate miscellaneous section (on the other side of the camera). I'm not really into westerns, kids/family stuff etc. so those don't have sections at all. I also don't separate films by decade... my 80s films are all just mixed in the other genres. I primarily collect action, sci-fi, horror or adjacent films... there are a lot of subgenres I'm just not really interested in, so they're not represented in my collection. Where did you get your metal movie posters?
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz 15 күн бұрын
Most of them I just got from Amazon U.S. A few of them took a few weeks to get to me, because they came from China. But I think most all of them were ordered from Amazon U.S. (or eBay in a couple cases). I just did a search for the movie title along with the words "tin sign" or "tin movie poster" or "metal sign" -- something along those lines. They're all 8 inches by 12 inches in size, and there are a ton of them out there for different movies. Some examples: Here's the link for the Aliens tin sign I bought: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CKW81Y87 And here's one for The Matrix: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B76D5YMV And here's the one I bought for Heat: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CQGS3KGB Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Question?? If you own a movie on Blu ray do you really need to upgrade it to 4K ??
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz 14 күн бұрын
That depends entirely on the specific movie and the restoration, the previous blu-ray transfer, the 4K transfer, etc. There are so many factors involved that vary from movie to movie. Every film is unique in how it's handled, so you really have to take it on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes the 4K is a significant upgrade over blu-ray, while other times it may only be a marginal upgrade. It depends on things like what kind of source materials were available for the restorations, the condition of the source materials, what kind of work was done to restore the film, color timing, grain management, etc. But yes, overall, I think 4K is usually a significant enough upgrade for me to justify spending the money on it. But it can also be subjective, as everyone's eyes are different in terms of how they perceive these things. I made a video about a year ago exploring some of these variables and why some 4K transfers look better than others. Check it out if you're interested: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otOlg5qZqavHZWg.html I upgrade some blu-rays to 4K when possible, but not all. There are some titles where I'm good with blu-ray and don't really feel like I need a 4K disc. So just depends on the film for me. Thanks for watching!

You have Twister kind of by itself. Shouldn't that be with natural disasters?
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz 13 күн бұрын
Yeah it should... I'm still trying to figure out where to put my disaster films and how I want to arrange them. Some are sci-fi leaning, others are more appropriate for the action category. So I will probably be moving those around and rearranging once the Twister 4K comes out in a couple weeks. Thanks for watching!

i didn't even know there was a new Event Horizon coming. But I just looked it up after reading this comment, and it appears Amazon is working on a new series -- which is kind of a bummer for me, because I don't really have any interest in series these days. I would rather see a proper feature-length movie reboot or sequel, prequel etc. than a series. So that's a little disappointing, because I'll probably never watch the series. But I do love the original film, flaws and all. Thanks for watching and commenting.
