I absolutely adore the 70s. It's the best and the most creatively rich decade in the history of cinema in my opinion. So many of my all-time favorites are from this era. The Exorcist, Alien, Dog Day Afternoon, Apocalypse Now, Chinatown, The Deer Hunter, The Conversation, Taxi Driver, The Godfather Part I & II, Nashville, Network, All That Jazz, Jaws, Barry Lyndon, Stalker, Solaris etc.

I agree! It was indeed a creatively rich decade... I think a lot of important seeds were planted during the 70s that shaped film for decades to come (with the New Hollywood movement, etc.). So many great films came out during that era. Great list! Dog Day and Deer Hunter in particular are ones I have always liked too, but just couldn't quite find room on my list for. Thanks for watching!

@@Sas-wk9lj Yeah it's definitely one of the most underrated titles from his filmography along with The Killing. I'd say Barry Lyndon and Dr Strangelove are my favorite Kubrick films. I'm also a big fan of 2001 but I've always liked Solaris better.

Some of my favorites: Sorcerer (1977), Blazing Saddles (1974), and Vanishing Point (1971). Roger Moore is also my favorite Bond and the night I saw Star Wars is forever ingrained in my head along with the rest of the original trilogy, never seen lines that long for any movies since then.

Yep I totally hear ya about the Star Wars trilogy. I'll never forgot the moment when we first found out who Vader was in Empire... I feel like I can even remember an audible gasp in the theater at the time. Lol! Those were the days! Btw, I'm kind of kicking myself for not at least mentioning Sorcerer... I didn't think of it until after I'd finished filming this video, but Sorcerer is such a great film.

I'm delighted you mentioned Dirty Harry, it is my 11th or 12th favourite movie. I've been a fan of that since i first watched it aged 5 or 6 in the mid 80s. Andrew Robinson who plays the bad guy has been in loads of other stuff, such as Hellraiser, and Child's Play 3, and the role i best know him for from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, playing a complex character. I was lucky enough to meet him at a Star Trek convention in London a few years ago. As i got his autograph i complimented how well he plays psycho's, thankfully he took that as a compliment lol. The actor seems a really nice guy with a great sense of humour.

That's right Andrew Robinson was awesome... super creepy bad guy!! he has a very distinctive face that lends itself well to the psycho creep factor LMAO! And I do remember seeing him in a number of other things as well. Gotta love Clint as Dirty Harry... I only wish he'd done a couple more of those films. I just love them. Magnum Force is probably my fave of the bunch, but definitely love the original classic almost as much.

Love Walter Hill and although both The Warriors and The Driver are fantastic I would definitely give the edge to the latter, and that Studio Canal 4K disc is stunning. Three Days of the Condor is one of my favourite 70s films as is The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three and The French Connection. I’d also like to add Get Carter, Jaws, The Getaway, The Sting, Scarecrow, Straight Time and The Long Goodbye to my list. I’m so with you on Star Wars. I remember we always went to the big showings at the cinema as a whole family. Such magical memories and although I’m not into Sci-fi, I think of Star Wars as a very special film (and the original trilogy as a whole) that means a lot to me. There are so many wonderful 70s films with the most incredible directors, actors and crew. For me it’s clearly the best decade in cinema history and nothing will ever come close to it. I feel the same way about 70s music which was the pinnacle, in my opinion. I wonder why that is.

I was also in awe seeing Superman in the theater at 9 years old. The theater was so packed that my mother, brother and myself had to sit in separate seats not together. Somewhere in Time would have been in my top 5 seventies movies list. Definitely check this one out. I was fascinated even watching it when I was 12 years old.

I miss the good old days and those experiences lol. Thanks for watching.

I've been thinking that the Fuzz must have never seen One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, or surely he wouldn't have missed putting 1 of the most outstanding films in Hollywood's 100+ year history on a list of 25 Top 70s movies! And Fuzz leaving the terrific Jaws off his list, though it's certainly a far better made film (and is more entertaining) than more than half of the movies that the Fuzz DID include, may be an understandable omission since Jaws receives so MUCH attention on KZfaq as being one of the very finest 4K BDs of a decades old film, so maybe the Fuzz didn't see a particular need to bring that amazing movie to the attention of more people. I mean, anyone who isn't aware of how exciting that Jaws is must have been raised in a cave without communication to the outside world! Because Jaws was the first giant summer blockbuster, and it played for 11 consecutive weeks at the Wantagh theater on Long Island, in the summer of 1975! That theater was just a mile from my house, when I was a kid.

I totally get that about The Warriors... It's a great film. I almost chose it over The Driver myself. I actually weighed that choice fairly heavily. But the more I thought about it, the more I felt like I just connected a tiny bit more with The Driver. I'm a huge fan of heist films, so anything that's heist-adjacent often gets the edge for me. Glad you highlighted Chinatown, The Man Who Would Be King, Elephant Man (though it came out in 80), Rocky, & Papillon. Actually, when encountering a friend or a relative who hasn't seen me in a while, & asks about how things are going with a health situation I'm facing, I like to answer that by borrowing Steve McQueen's line as Papillon, by simply saying "I'm still here!" Love that film, & see it quite often, since thinking about Papillon's steely refusal to ever give up, is so inspiring to me in the way it shows how the human spirit can lift us to stand up against long odds!

@@mrb0775 They don’t make movies like that any more, do they? Your comment made me think of the scene in Man Who Would be King when Dravott and Carnahan are trapped by a chasm facing certain death from cold; realizing that the game is up they start laughing uproariously. Their laugh triggers an enormous avalanche that fills the chasm and they are saved. It’s an unforgettable scene and one of my favorites in all cinema. @@sonofacheron I very much appreciate your kind and encouraging words, sonofacheron! You've made me think about how encouragement from a stranger has a unique sort of value of its own, since it's basically a routine (though still kind) act for those who know a person to offer him encouragement, however when such support comes from a stranger, that's anything but routine! And I'm sure glad to see a fellow movie fan, like you, who appreciates Papillon, since to me it seems that the film always gets less attention than it deserves, especially since Papillon has traditionally been listed as having been the 4th, or even the 3rd, biggest hit at America's box offices, among the movies that were released in 1973, depending on which source one goes by. So I also wanted to offer my sincere thanks to you for remembering to include Papillon on your list!

Another great list my brother! I think I’m going to need to check out Phantasm. That is one I haven’t seen yet (or the sequel) but it sounds right up my alley. I recently purchased and watched Silent Running from Arrow and was somewhat let down by it. I liked the plot and while it’s a mostly slower film by design, that ending really did not do the film service IMO. Seems like it’s also time for me to check out more Brian DePalma and The Fury. Again, you gave me some great films and physical media to get after and into my collection.

Yeah you definitely should check out the Phantasm films (at least the first two). I think a case can be made that the first one was even sort of a precursor to Nightmare on Elm St. Sorry to hear you were a little let down by Silent Running, but I can totally understand... that ending is a downer for sure, and it kind of leaves this haunting aftertaste. Imagine my 7 or 8 year-old brain processing that when I first saw it! Like I said, that ending stuck with me for many years, well into adulthood. As for De Palma... yeah dude, if you like Carrie, you'll probably really like the Fury too (I actually like it more than Carrie). It's a great film! Thanks for watching and chiming in my friend.

You made the right choice choosing The Driver over The Warriors. While The Warriors is a fun slice of 70's entertainment, The Driver is the better film stylistically and is a more "grown up" film if that makes any sense. Makes a great double feature with Rolling Thunder. As for The Godfather, it's a great classic but I agree it's not a film you can just casually throw on several times a year. It's the kind of film you need to make time for to be fully enveloped in it. Plus, you can't just watch Part I - you gotta take it all in. Thanks for the video, enjoyed as always.

Aw Fuzz, you omitted 1 of the 70s films often listed among the All-Time cinema greats (it even made Roger Ebert's "Great Films" list) that I watch at least once every 3 months, since its stunning cinematography by that master of light & darkness, Vittorio Storaro, puts an image on our 85 inch screen, via its 4K Blu-ray edition, that makes 1979's "Apocalypse Now" THE film that I pull out if wanting to show folks how amazing it can be to see fantastic looking movies on fairly sizable screens. Plus, the film's revealing and realistic voice over, that's often heard in the movie, was based on the writings of a Vietnam vet, and is simply mesmerizing in some places, as it's so well voiced by Martin Sheen who plays the film's main character & anti-hero. Honestly Fuzz, "Apocalypse Now", which was 1 of the 5 films nominated for 1979's Best Picture Academy Award, really did, in the view of many movie addicts (like yours truly) deserve to win that Oscar as 1979's Best Picture, but that award went to "Kramer vs. Kramer", the huge box office hit, and fine film, that Dustin Hoffman won a Best Actor Oscar for. In fact Fuzz, I'm sorry to have to say that I think it's not too tough of a call, at all, to rate both "Apocalypse Now" and "Kramer vs. Kramer" as being two movies that are not only better, but more entertaining than at least 15, or more, of the 70s films that you selected. And I think that my two 1970s movie choices, especially "Kramer vs. Kramer", since it's 48 min. shorter than "Apocalypse Now", that has a 2 hrs 33 min. running time, will still BOTH have most movie fans checking the time less often, than they would when viewing over half of the 70s movies that you chose, since both films contain elements which continually keep them interesting. But it must be noted that the version of "Apocalypse Now" I described is the original 1979 cut of the film, NOT 1 of the 2 other versions that both run over 3 hours, hurting the pace & impact of the film with unneeded footage, which was edited out in 1979, and should have stayed out! Fuzz, I regret being such a critical curmudgeon here, in this particular instance, but IMO your Top 5 picks are excellent, since "Alien" is my #1 favorite in the Sci-Fi/Horror genre, "Close Encounters" is my #1 Sci-Fi pick, & "The Exorcist" is #1 in Horror. Plus, I always appreciate getting to see your latest evaluations of the quality of 4K Blu-ray releases of some good movies.

Well believe it or not, the interesting thing about Apoc Now is that I've still to this day never even seen the film. And I even own it on 4K! I bought it about a year ago, just because I knew it was a big deal and I was looking for reference quality 4K discs to add to my collection (I hear Apoc Now is amazing on 4K). But I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet. The main reason is that I'm just not the biggest fan of war movies. I made an exception buying Apoc Now, but I've been waiting to be in the right mood to watch it. I have no doubt it's a stellar movie... it's just not a genre that I gravitate toward very often (with certain exceptions). But I'm sure I'll get around to it at some point. I do like Kramer vs. Kramer though (as far as dramas go)... even though I haven't seen it for many years (it's probably been 25-30 years since I've seen the film). Thanks for weighing in! Appreciate the feedback.
@mrb0775
@mrb0775 5 ай бұрын
Fuzz, just wanted to quickly say it's likely that you'll enjoy "Apocalypse Now" a good deal more than you've been able to enjoy the majority of war movies that you've seen. An important feature of the film is the series of brief voice over passages that are so effectively voiced by Martin Sheen who used his voice to hit the ideal type of tone to fit some narration which was based on the book "Dispatches", that was written by a man who was a soldier in the Vietnam War. Plus Fuzz, I think that you'll really appreciate the stunning cinematography of the film which won Vittorio Storaro 1 of the 3 Oscars he's collected after final vote totals from his peers had selected the work he did on 3 movies, of 3 different years, as being the best film photography anyone had done for a feature length film, in each of those years. And Fuzz, with you having a 75 inch flat panel, that's a substantial size that, IMO, puts it into the category of being a cinema screen, instead of just being a TV set's screen. So I really envy you being able to experience the magnificent photography of that film for the first time with fresh eyes. One recommendation I would make is to watch the film in a dark room, with no lights on, to be able to soak up the full effect of what the terrific 4K Blu-ray of the film will be presenting to you. My own personal preference for watching "Apocalypse Now" on a 75" 4K TV, would be to sit 7 to 7 and a half feet from the screen. If a person has good peripheral vision that's NOT too close. As people have often discussed on other KZfaq channels which focus on TVs & home theater, most folks sit too far from a flat screen 4K TV to even approach being able to see the finest details that 4K resolution can provide. In fact, to find out the maximum seating distance from a screen that a viewer with 20/20 vision can place himself, so he's just able to see the finest details that even well produced 1080p discs are able to show, you multiply a TV's diagonal screen size by 1.56, giving a 75" TV a max. seating distance of 117" or 9 ft 9" for seeing 1080p's finest detail. Obviously, people with 20/20 vision (or eyes corrected to 20/20 via glasses) will have to sit considerably CLOSER than 9 ft 9" from 75" TVs to see much of the added detail that 4K can display vs. the tiniest details that 1080p can show. Let me give anyone reading this long rant a break by simply saying that someone seeing a movie KNOWS he's gotten TOO CLOSE to a screen, if his eyes or head need to make ANY back & forth movement to enable him to see ALL of the screen's picture, as well as being able to focus on all the action occurring within that picture. @@TheOriginalFuzz

@@mrb0775 Yeah I will definitely check it out at some point. Thanks for your thoughts on the film, I'll take them to heart. Although you touched on some of the reasons I bought the release... the cinematography and visuals, for one thing (I was looking for stunning reference-quality discs to add to my collection, and the Apocalypse 4K was on sale for cheap to boot Lol!😆... I think I got it for like $10-$15). And the cast sounds amazing too... Sheen, Hopper, Brando, Duvall, Ford, Fishburne, etc. Interestingly enough, I do sit about 7-7.5 feet away from my screen LOL!😆 I actually wouldn't mind coming a little closer even (maybe 6 feet... and sometimes I do temporarily move the couch lol), but my family doesn't like it as close. But I agree that a lot of people aren't aware of the need to view movies a little closer for 4K in order to see all the benefits (or at least, as much as possible relative to the type of screen). I was surprised when I was first told about 4K viewing distances a few years back... at first I thought it might be way too close. But the more I learned about and experienced 4K, the more I realized it was actually ideal. And I pretty much always view 4Ks for the first time in a dark room too (I like a nice bright picture LMAO!🤣). So I'm definitely with you on all that.😉 But I appreciate you bringing this up for anyone reading, because I know a lot of people viewing the channel/comments may be new to the format. Thanks again! 🙂

I have a number of favorites from that decade that didn't make the cut on this list. They include Apocalypse Now, M*A*S*H, Days of Heaven, Taxi Driver, A Clockwork Orange, Eraserhead, Roman Polanski's version of Macbeth, Andrei Tarkovsky's Mirror, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Jaws, Blazing Saddles, National Lampoon's Animal House, Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke, Love and Death, and others that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Fuzz, I very much appreciate your quick response regarding my "Apocalypse Now" comments. BTW, unless I missed you noting it in one of your previous videos, please let home theater fans, like myself, know what type and size of TV, or what sort of projector and screen that you're using when evaluating the picture quality of Blu-rays, and especially in judging the PQ of 4K discs. Because especially when viewing a 4K Blu-ray, using a TV of 55", or smaller, makes it pretty tough to make a completely accurate judgment of a 4K's ultimate PQ, since quality flaws that can be easy to miss on a 55" screen, can be quite apparent on an 85" screen. Because the size of the picture a 55" TV shows, is blown up to being 2.39 times that size in square inches of area that the same picture image occupies when it's shown on an 85" TV's screen. Also, when evaluating the PQ of a Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray, of a movie which contains some very dark scenes, the best type of TV for seeing how accurately a disc presents such dark scenes, is an OLED TV, like those of the Sony, LG, or Samsung brands. Although 1 particular Non-OLED Samsung model that was at the top of its 2022 Neo-QLED TVs illuminated by Mini-LEDs actually displayed deep blacks as well as an OLED is able to do. But generally, there's unanimous agreement among film and video experts that OLED is the only tech that is capable of displaying "absolute black", so that images can be displayed with a depth in the black of very dark scenes that even NO digital 4K projector, like a $200,000 digital projector used in one of today's state of the art commercial movie theaters is even capable of displaying! Anyhow, when viewing movies having very dark scenes, as they're being presented by a Blu-ray or a 4K Blu-ray, having an OLED TV, with its unbeatable ability to present the darkest scenes, is a very useful tool, since it allows a reviewer to see exactly how well a disc succeeds at fully showing the darkest scenes. (Fine OLEDs have VERY modest prices vs their cost just 5 yrs ago!) Fuzz, in my already OVERLONG post of technical rambling here, please bear with me for one personal anecdote that you (& hopefully, at least some of my fellow movie fans here) might find to be pretty interesting. My wife & I saw "Oppenheimer" at one of the Cinemark theater chains huge XD theaters (XD stands for Extreme Digital). But though the movie was fine, & quite enjoyable to us, I was disappointed to see for myself that claims I'd read by owners of OLED TVs, were accurate in saying that today's best movie theater projectors just can't cut the mustard in attempting to come close to displaying true black in very dark scenes! My wife and I hadn't gone to the movies in 10 years, probably because we have a collection of over 1,800 movies on Blu-ray & 4K Blu-ray, with even movies on DVD being about 600 of those movies. Anyhow, it was actually shocking to me that at a fancy theater with plush, electronically controlled, reclining seats, that each customer can adjust via push buttons, the movie image of "Oppenheimer" up on that theater's giant screen, definitely fell short in trying to display a true deep black which should have been present in the movie's darkest scenes. So I guess the Mrs & I won't return to going out to the movies again, since movies shown on our 2 main TVs are presented with better PQ than today's top movie theaters seem to have! And with that, I want to now catch up with the action that's occurring in the Super Bowl, that's being captured by our DVR. Thanks again, Fuzz, for all the efforts that you put into keeping movie fans informed about developments in physical media!

Well first off, I appreciate where you're coming from. I should say I don't typically offer a lot of technical information about equipment/gear, since that's just not really my focus or forte. Although I do totally understand why you would ask (since, like you said, there's a lot you can't see on smaller screens with 4K. The screen size can definitely make a difference with this format, as can the viewing distance from the screen). But just keep in mind I don't really consider myself to be a professional, objective reviewer. In fact, I haven't even really started doing what I would consider 4K reviews yet. I'm just an average collector with a modest setup giving my casual take on physical releases of the films I love. I don't have a high-end setup with extensive home theater attributes or anything like that (nor do I believe that's necessary in order to be able to appreciate the 4K format). So I usually will not say a whole lot about the gear I'm using, other than mentioning just a few general pieces of info: I have a 75-inch Samsung 4K TV, several 4K players (incl. Sony X700 and Panny UB820), and a traditional 5.1 surround system (no Atmos) with mostly Polk speakers (towers, center channel), 12-inch sub. But that's about as much detail as I will get into when talking about the technical stuff. I'm just not someone who keeps up on the tech and on the new models of various pieces of gear or anything like that. I think my own 4K TV is probably like 5 years old now. But even then, I still don't really enjoy going to movies as much anymore. Every once in awhile maybe. But I tend to prefer the comfort of home these days, even with my modest setup. I do have plans to start doing my version of 4K reviews soon (mini-reviews -- "4K Takeaways")... They won't be in-depth, detailed or comprehensive reviews, but I will be doing a little more with them than what I usually do in my list videos. And once I start doing the 4K Takeaways, then yes, I will probably mention something in each video about the size/type of the screen I'm using and the capabilities I have or don't have (Dolby Vision, Atmos, etc.), just so people have that general frame of reference, like you indicated. It's also probably worth noting that I often find that my own personal image preferences (for settings, etc.) deviate from what the experts tell me I'm supposed to prefer. It sounds like OLEDs are the probably the best quality overall... I don't doubt that from all the great things I've read and heard. But even then, I'm still not sure if an OLED would be the best option for me personally, given my own image preferences (I've heard they're not as bright, which would be an issue for me). That said, I would like to eventually upgrade at some point to either a projector or a higher quality panel, so I've been gradually researching this stuff on my own to try and figure out what's best for me. I definitely find myself wanting an even bigger screen now (at least 85-inches). My 75 is great for now, but I'm growing LMAO!😂 And I could see myself reaching a point where I've "outgrown" it LOL! 😆😉 Hope this helps a bit. Again, I appreciate your question and thoughts on this. And thank you for watching!

Hello man. Hope you're well. What's your opinion on motion smoothing? AKA The soap opera effect! I ask because when I bought my 4k TV the review instantly suggested turning it off...which I did as it did indeed make films look like soap operas which I hated! I've just had a debate with a guy who runs a utube channel ( he shall remain nameless and he mostly does games ) who said he thinks it's amazing especially for the film Annihilation! What is the reason for having motion smoothing? Is it to draw in the pensioners who mostly watch soaps? And are there any films like anime, CGI where motion smoothing would benefit it? I truly think it ruins any film...takes you out of it...makes you feel like you're on set. God awful to me!! I'd love your opinion as he got funny ( I have a lovely 55 TCL mini led 4k TV ) and suggested I upgrade to an Oled to understand how good motion smoothing is. I've seen it looks nice on my TV it just ruins films 😂😂

I think it really just comes down to personal preference. Some people like it, some don't. Though most collectors I've talked to don't seem to like it, because it alters the film from the original look and feel the filmmakers' intended. Many people don't like high frame rates for the same reason (i.e. Gemini Man)... they think it looks too soap opera-like. And I totally understand that. Even big celebrities like Tom Cruise have come out strongly against motion smoothing. Personally, I usually prefer to see the films look as close as possible to what the director intended.
