In this video I show you how to collect manzanita wood and rocks for your hardscape. If you like in an area with Ponderosa pine trees you may be able to fine some manzanita wood for your aquascape. I am going to be aquascaping the ADA 60P with this wood and rocks. It will be a bucephalandra heavy tank. Will use hygrophila pinnatifida, sawtooth, Belem hair grass, Anubias, bucephalandra etc...

Be careful, at least in S. Cal, it's illegal to collect manzanita wood on federal/state land. Check with your local Forestry Office for the exact rules and regulations, lest you get hit with a hefty fine.

BAMAZ#1 Yo!! Thanks for watching as always. Yeah do a bucephalandra heavy scape. I am just in love with the blue and purple/red colors they produce. Late to the party, but it is time for a bucephalandra heavy scape. It does suck that the wood is pretty expensive. At least around here it is. If it makes you feel better I only discovered this area two years ago.

Am planning on designing the hardscape today and it will be a part of the setup video. I may do some bog plant vivarium with my ADA 45F. It just has so much evaporation I hate scaping the tank. Really hard to take care of so right now it is just sitting empty.

matthew smith I don't like nano tanks anymore. Haha. 10 gallons is as low as I will go. Dude! I swear we always need teachers. Maybe look into it. Park City starts out at $50K US. And if you are willing to work on an Indigenous reservation in Kanab, Utah they will pay $80K, but is usually in the middle of a rural area. I swear we are having a teacher shortage in Utah. Look into it.

First time to your channel and a subscriber after I saw the opening video shots. I'll explain; the water dripping over the limestone, I said to myself that looks familiar, sure looks like the trail to Mount Timpanogos. Then the shot of the lake with the mountains in background, got to be Uintah Mountains. The vids of the dead fall manzanita had to be the highway area just south of Flaming Gorge reservoir. I then read through some of the comments and confirmed that it was indeed Utah. I think I was routed to your channel from DIY channel or maybe Green Machine. Anyway good job. Have thought about setting up a planted aquarium but seems so overwhelming with water changing, dosing, lighting, sumps and refugiums . (advanced old age here) However with all the availability of on line resource purchases I have been leaning towards doing one. Need a video on how to convert our hard alkaline water into soft acidic, or at least neutral water.

I really didn't know all that expensive wood was Manzanita. We have that stuff everywhere here in Southwest Oregon. Matter of fact it's even within walking distance of my house. Of course here in Oregon we are also a Rock hounding paradise. We are rock hounds so basically all I need to do is go outside and check in the Rock gardens. I can't wait to do this because I will actually be setting up my first tank after 30 years of not having one.

I recently got some and sprayed it etc and it has been soaking for a bit now and anytime I move the branches in the water they let off tons of little pieces and kinda haze the water. I live in northern New Mexico and I was wondering if dead sagebrush would be ok in my aquarium...there are some of the the coolest wood pieces I have ever seen and would look so sweet in my nano tank. Any thoughts would be very appreciated. I have access to the best black lava rock too here, it is all along the Rio Grande River...every size you could image, some wore down really smooth right at the river's edge. My idea for gravel is using ant piles here on the mesa where all the sage is...they make these piles of the perfect size gravel (1-3mm) any where from 1-3 feet tall.
@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 7 жыл бұрын
Sean Meister haha, funny thing is I have always wanted to try ant sand as well. Ha. Sage brush may not be as good of an option long term because it isn't as dense and more loose fibers. If you find a really fresh dense strong piece I am sure it could work before it rots. Even Manzanita will degrade after a few years of use
@mountainhobbit1971
@mountainhobbit1971 7 жыл бұрын
thanks...yeah, that is what I was thinking about the sage too...I may still give it a try...not sure yet...but the ant pile 'gravel' is going to be perfect! I will keep you posted. thanks a bunch.

@ADUAquascaping
@ADUAquascaping 6 жыл бұрын
Tanner Gittins I noticed something similar above the water column. Figure it is some kind of fungus. I never had it below the water surface, but I did get a little bit of some fuzzy white fungus within the water and on sections of the wood. Not too much though. Maybe having a bit of the wood out of water forced most of it to grow at the tops of the wood.

I just find rocks that look good and use them. Unless you are using limestone or something with pyrite, I wouldn't worry about any rocks changing water parameters. Muriatic acid is just a waste of time.

Pray4Mojo ? How so. People use it to acid wash the rocks. Makes them darker in color if high in carbonate- for aesthetic reasons. You can't always tell the calcite concentration just from looking at it bro

Some native plants are protected by California law. Important California laws for native plant protection are the California Endangered Species Act (CESA), the Native Plant Protection Act (NPPA), the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the Natural Community Conservation Planning Act (NCCPA), the California Desert Native Plants Act (CDNPA), and California Penal Code Section 384a.

Christina Holland All true, but you can still get a special use permit from the forest service. Manzanita is not regulated in Utah, and can collect for commercial use. Also, many hobbyists sell Manzanita out of California. Are you an environmental manager or earth sciencist by chance? It sounds like maybe you are. I would assume manzanita isn't much of a concern in California. Just have to call the forest service and find out.

Elliott Eiden You can get a special use permit. And call the forest service office so it isn't an issue. That way you don't get busted.

For the record, it is illegal to pick or have in your possession any form of manzanita in CA. It is a threatened and endangered species. "Killing or possessing manzanita trees is illegal under the California Endangered Species Act. It is unlawful to harvest anything but the fruit of a manzanita tree without a permit, and owning any other part of a manzanita tree is also against the law."

Uh oh, you're in trouble then hehe. OK, but you can get a special use permit? In Utah it's not regulated and I'm only collecting dead wood. Tom Barr lives in Cali and harvests it for resale. Does the law change if the wood is dead? If it's dead why would they care?
@longtailsgal6119

And collecting it from public lands will absolutely invite prosecution. Your best bet is to find a private property owner... it is still illegal, but you might have a leg to stand on if you get caught.

@@longtailsgal6119 That sounds like a good plan. In Utah you can just get a special use permit and go collect dead wood.
