It doesn't matter if the face paint was green. The impact was that with dark lighting and poor video quality made it look like blackface, especially when combined with over a decade of racist behavior. The musical number wasn't some spur of the moment thing, she did this on tour where she had ample planning and rehearsal time to see exactly how everything would look and she went through with it. @@DJDownes100Disagree, it would be a reach if Colleen wasn't a theater major who failed to, or intentionally chose not to, 1. not wear a bright neon green face paint to match the character instead of dark green, 2. not pre-test the makeup in different lighting to know it would show up a dark brown-green in orange lighting (again, she's a theater major, she knows how important costuming/makeup is), and 3. not remove it with a makeup wipe of which would taken only a minute or so more during her little costume change. Instead she did choose all these things, failed to take any of it into account, or did know and purposely placed the Elphaba act infront of her Beyonce act. Either she is racist but smart enough to give herself an out, or she should get her money back from her degree because she failed to take into account costuming and staging - two major parts of theater.

Even if its 'just a character', she chose to say that stuff. Characters aren't real, they're created, and you can make one that says offensive and/or out of touch things without a single one of those things being harmful to minority groups. There's _plenty_ of offensive stuff you can say without bringing in someones race/gender/sexuality. There's lots of boundaries a comedian can push without pushing it backwards into the 1800s

love that last line. Miranda could have been just a really, really delusional (and weird as hell) girl who thought she was the absolute best at everything and a total beauty despite her over drawn lips and comically grandiose personality. there was no need for her to be racist, not understand boundaries at all (especially with kids), say really disturbing things about uncle Jim/periods/literally everything, or be homophobic (peep her having gay "baes" and following the rhetoric that they were only gay because they hadn't found the right girl yet, and now they have). edit: forgot an "and."

@anniemal8030 See another thing. Theatre bits are usually blocked out so you can do (Act 1, Act 2, Finale) so the set can operate with the actors and sound crew. So it's hard for me to think it wasn't INTENTIONALLY put back to back, because she has to know what scene comes next.

in re: the green face paint, i think it's important to remember that the way we saw this video is that it was an unlisted video linked from her book va QR code, and that the video as linked from the book did not give the Elphaba context for the facepaint. The original performance may have been a genuine mistake, but I'm sure she had other Single Ladies performances without facepaint. So why did she choose the one where she had facepaint on to include here unless it was to make an "oops, miranda didn't realize she did a thing that looked like blackface?" joke?

Yes I have said this other places, great that everyone is screaming context matters. No for this clip it needs to be able to stand alone as no one scanning the QR code would have had context. By the time the book came out in 2018 Colleen would have had 100's of clips to choose from. This was the one that was chosen to be an Easter Egg.

I feel like not enough people are talking about how disgusting and disturbing Colleen Ballinger’s two books are. I’m usually not a person that agree with banning books but in this case I strongly think these book need to not be available for children. Some of the things in these 2 books could make children think that this stuff is ok, and normalizing, desensitizing, and exposing, the children to incest, hurting animals, and other really disgusting things that could damage the young impressionable minds. I really hope that if more people talk about her two books being so disgusting and inappropriate that hopefully Amazon and others will stop selling them and if you know a child that has these book I strongly recommend taking a look at it and please talking to the parents. Unfortunately I’m guessing some parents didn’t look through these books first, but when they see what Colleen put in theses book and hopefully the parents will return the book and talk to their children about the stuff in the books and how they sound not do what is says, because some of it can be dangerous

Something else I’ve been thinking about since this story came out, is the pervasiveness of childhood SA. When you realize how many children are impacted, you have to consider the overlap in people who viewed her content. Meaning that children enduring this in their own environment were having it normalized to them in children content too. I’m not at all surprised to learn about allegations of racism, bc she’s a despicable person.

I’ve seen PLENTY of bits where the creator uses a racist character without being offensive at all, and using the said character to actually condemn the terrible behaviors they are associated with. It’s absolutely possible to be funny and intelligent with a racist character while condemning racism (and lots of other things, I’m using race here as it’s the main topic). On the top of my head I can think of Austin Archer, he does really good bits with terrible characters AND he does informative and activism at the same time. So, to me, there’s no excuse to her behaviors, not a single one of them. Also it’s so true that her legal team told on themselves and Colleen about talking just on that instance, as it’s the only one that they could talk about trying to disprove. Cause she’s done all of the stuff she’s been accused of, the proof it’s there, they can’t try to defend her without straight up lying about it.

Frankly idgaf if the paint was black, brown, green, etc. If you’re about to go on stage and perform a song by a black woman you wipe that shit off your face first. I do not buy for one second that a 30+ year old person in the year 2018 thinks it’s okay to go perform a Beyoncé song with dark paint on your face. I believe the blackface was intentional and the “green paint” is a convenient red herring. She chose to do the Beyoncé bit right after the wicked bit. She chose to keep that on her face knowing how it would look but knowing she could argue plausible deniability. It’s completely in line with the Miranda humour. I’m white and maybe it isn’t my place to say whether or not people should be offended but I believe it is my place to say that white people should not be putting paint on their faces and then singing Beyoncé. That’s just my opinion.

IMHO quality kids' entertainment is both harder to get right and more important than quality adult entertainment. The entertainment kids consume can contribute so much to their development as people, but it also has to also be digestible and enjoyable for an undeveloped brain, which can be hard to nail down. Anyone who is able to do a good job with kids' entertainment deserves to be proud of their hard work and talent. To me, the issue is not that Colleen's entertainment was intended for kids, but that it was neither appropriate for kids nor high quality.

Hi Vangelina, about Bodegas ! 17:20 "Sous Le Soleil de Bodega" by the - - Vertes (I am not allowed to write the name of the band). In the Occitan language, a Bodega is also the place where you drink and party. A Bodega can be a bagpipe. If there is one place where to party hard, that's the Basque Country. In July, bulls are let loose in the streets of Bayonne. Thousands of people in the streets are all dressed in white with a red bandana and a beret. The Basques are a special breed of party animals. Wild ! Bayonne fiestas are insane. Add the Rugby tradition on top of that, another reason to get plastered. When you hear brass bands at a Rugby game, that's the Basque trademark. The - Vertes are not basque at all, they are parisians as can be, but the popular districts of Paris being super cosmopolitan, they mixed the traditions.
