This video is a summary of my college application journey, including information on which schools I applied to, my stats, extracurricular activities, and final college decisions. I hope this gives you a better perspective on the college admissions process and how circumstances can vary from student to student. If you've already watched other college stats videos, you can see that test scores are definitely not the only defining point of your application. There are many other factors that contribute to college standards that are out of your control; however, all in all, if you are willing to put in the effort, you'll thrive wherever you'll end up going!
If you found this helpful or have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment below!

I'm an AVID teacher, and let me remind everyone of something: This young woman (Claire) did EVERYTHING right. She excelled in academics, extracurriculars, and took more than she needed to, but I was SURE she was going to get into one of those IVY leagues... but this goes to show that it's not about that... remember those Ivy leagues have a 2-5% acceptance rates. Do NOT get sick about being perfect... you're more important that that. However, do what you KNOW you're capable of. This young lady has an ABSOLUTELY bright future and anyone who accepts her and/or employs her will most definitely get an outstanding candidate. Congrats Claire on all of your successes. Wishing you a beautiful college experience and ENJOY it. I LOVED going UC Irvine, and honestly, I learned to grow up there a lot. I partied a little too hard, almost got into academic probation, and that's when I really shaped up. Enjoy life (while keeping to an incline path), and just maintain a positive outlook on life and good vibes will come your way!

You are a very gifted young lady and will be sure to have success wherever you go! Can't understand what some schools saw in your remarkable resume and results not to accept! Makes me a bit nervous for my 11th grader. I went to college in the UK (applied to Cambridge in G11 and did not get in :(), but the standard here is evidently very high now.

No clue how I ended up here (I'm a college senior). But just wanted to provide some reassurance: I was in a similar position to you 4 years back, got accepted to my flagship state school and rejected/WL at all of my Ivys. Was devastated -- also recorded my reactions and didn't post haha. Ended up going to the state school, and now I have a job where I'll be working alongside a bunch of Ivys/toptiers (a job that friends of mine at Cornell/Harv/etc couldn't get). The school truly doesn't define you. It'll be tough for the first year or so but just keep that in mind!

I totally agree! I ended up going to a school in Chicago (DePaul) and was upset that I was not able to go to my dream school The University of Wisconsin-Madison due to financial reasons. I ended up getting an internship offer my freshman year at Deloitte which is the number 1 accounting firm in the world and I truly don’t think it would’ve been possible if I would’ve went to UW-Madison because of how competitive and huge the business school is.

first and foremost i just wanted to say congrats for all of your acceptances and for being put on the waitlist for so many schools :))) thats some incredible stuff! i just wanted to say that I noticed that we have a lot of similarities in our college admissions process (high stats and test scores, amazing achievements in ECs), and i just wanted to say that as someone who got rejected from Columbia (my dream school ugh), Penn and other t15s, I can SERIOUSLY empathize!!! it really sucks >:(((( and i know it may feel like you've done something completely wrong or that your hard work is not being validated (bc its what u FRICKIN deserve:////). but what i've had to come to grips with is that, these schools are missing the fck out... like it's their loss (ik that sounds egotistical but hear me out HAHA). at the end of the day, college is all about taking advantage of as much of your experience as you can, and I know that I will absolutely take advantage of EVERYTHING that's offered at the college I eventually attend (and I know that you probably will too!). so even though you may not really need it bc it seems like you're dealing with it well (idk tho hehe), but i just wanted to provide that reassurance because i know having that many rejections does not feel good (trust me, I know...). but know that your hard work was not for nothing. ultimately in the end everything happens for a reason, and just know that you WILL prove those colleges wrong :) i truly believe that!!! (but also gl for waitlist you prob wont even rly need this advice after lolol)

Taking those science courses during sophomore year sounds like a great idea! I think it's nice to have that AP Bio background before going into chem. For online APs, I would say don't take them unless they're really necessary because I definitely found it harder to absorb the material (unless it's like AP art history or human geography since those classes are more reading based), but you have to, make sure to use those Khan academy videos and textbooks to help you out!

Haha, I see. The Bowseat Ocean Awareness Contest is International and the Scholastic Art and Writing Award is too (but I think you may need a teacher's recommendation). If you want to show writing, try to join your school's newspaper or any type of yearbook planning if available. Besides that, you can always start your own blog/website and write what you like on there, but the main point is consistency! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Do the practice tests! I think Princeton Review books really help because it allows you to get familiar with the style and format of the math questions. Also, it's good to know those formulas by heart to save time, and a good understanding of those concepts will probably mean that you can grasp the question easily in the first place! And don't make careless mistakes! I think that was what costed me a lot of point in the practice tests, but if you're lucky it won't happen during the real exam.

Definitely take it right after doing AP World at school if you’re taking it! If not, the Princeton Review books help a lot and have a timeline of major events throughout history so you have better context. Crash course and some Ap world lectures on KZfaq are also super helpful!

i’m nervous for the awards part bc i basically have none. my school doesn’t offer many scholarship/award opportunities and i don’t know what contests to enter. all of my awards were won with a team (like science olympiad) or its just a reflection of my grades (like principals honor roll). i don’t think honor roll is impressive enough considering the schools i’m applying to. (i’m a junior btw)

same! I'll be applying to colleges this fall. I want to go to Ga tech and my school if offering nothing due to covid. Literally no clubs in a public school in georgia. The only big thing I have managed to get is accepted to taking a dual enrollment class through yale, and so far it's going great!

@@oscar-ko8qg glad that ur yale classes are going good!! i’m sure ga tech will understand your covid situation especially bc it’s in the same state. dual enrollment classes are great tho; they’ll see you tried to push yourself even during the pandemic. i hope you get in!!!

actually i love GEORGIA TECH AND ATLANTA , much better than boston . it really is as good as it gets , but because it is in our back yard it doesnt get all the respect , but it is world class , plus it should be free to you ... a major big deal . BUT IF I HAD IT ALL TO DO OVER AGAIN ... i would go to the university of miami .. warm and the beach . cant beat it ( grad school and law school tend to be free etc , but not medical school. thus free college really is a big deal if you are going on to med school )

Every Ivy League gets approximately 60,000 applicants nowadays especially with the test score optional feature. Out of these 60,000 applicants, there are thousands of them who are as qualified or even "better" in terms of extracurriculars or academics. Therefore when it comes down to choosing which applicants to admit, the colleges really do value the college essays the most as they are what tell the colleges about the applicant as a person and what makes them unique/distinguished from the other thousands of applicants who have extracurriculars and academics that are just as strong.
