African American does not hold up. Factually, not accurate. Why? Africa, like Asia is a big continent with diverse cultures. Moreover, not everyone from Africa is black. Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco are all African countries but they're also Arab countries. If you insist on being PC then technically, people from these countries who come to the United States are African American. And what about a white person from South Africa who moves to America? Technically, he's also an African American.

Putting Asians as model minority actually harms Asians. Affirmative actions discriminates against asians to "level up the playing fields" for other races. For example, Asians get penalties on their university entrance scores.

These aren’t quotas, college administer through a holistic approach. Just because their SAT score maybe 10-50 points below the average doesn’t automatically disqualify them. Recommendations, interview and accomplishments also factor into it. If you want to hate on something hate on legacy admission.

@@himlolo I agree with you though. I would want a system where tbe best go forward. But the reality is that affirmitive action is literally designed for Black Americans. It doesn’t help asians, whites, arabs, etc. it hurts them because those cultures tend to be better in academics. There is a very angering story about one of New Yorks top high schools where ltin and asian immigrants dominated because they excelled at academics. The city cracked down on it to enroll black kids who were way out of their league and capped the successful kids. Idiotism

@Hernando Malinche Additionally, during WWII the US entered the war as more of a direct belligerent to Japan rather than Germany or Italy (you can see this in the WWII pacific wars, Pearl Harvor, athe atomic bombs, and pretty much all throughout the history of the war. Americans at the time hated the Japanese a lot more than the Germans. Not saying there was absolutely no racism at all involved in the decision, but I’m saying that it wasn’t a choice completely based upon a “whites are better” standard.

As half Japanese and Chinese, the only reason why most Asian people good at math is just because the education system is quite fucked up in China due to the enormous population. With too many competitors, we have to learn AT LEAST NINE subjects back in high school and have to get it all A to get a DECENT college. Which means we were forced to study even when we were only 4 years old. So is actually a tragedy cuz most parents care about the grade more than their children's health. I was so lucky that my parents actually cared about me and sent me to London for high school and Japan later. Right now, I worked in London and never been this happy before.

They actually did put Germans in internment camps! It isn't as widely known as Japanese internment camps, but they existed during both World Wars and Italians were also put into camps (My family isn't Italian so I don't know as much about those). This wasn't just German nationals but people of recent German descent, they would have their homes and property seized by the government just the same as the Japanese population. The Germans weren't handled as agressively, being put on a case by case basis, but it didn't take much to qualify for internment. Many families abandonned German language and heritage, and even changed their names to be more "American" in order to seem as inconspicuous as possible. While technically only the person under suspicion had to be detained, families could choose to come along. This left many with the choice of splitting up their family and forcing the women and children to live without their main breadwinner outside the camp, or bringing their children into the camp which wasn't ideal. A lot of children ended up in orphanages because their parents were taken in. Those not detained could have their movements restricted, be banned from certain areas or could be put under curfews that their nongerman neighbors weren't subject to. No, it's not as bad, but that doesn't mean it should be erased. Admiting that the United States treated its white citizens terribly too doesn't minimize the suffering of minorities, it just lays out history as it actually happened.

To be clear, both programs were intrinsically racist. Clever racist organizations don't reveal their blind hatred for everyone, but instead apply different standards to different races as a disguise. The Italians were promoted and given responsibilities during WW2 to act as security. The Japanese were just camped. Explain that.

@@OverthereLook The statement wasn't about that, it was about the fact that the camps existed and that not many people acknowledge them. I don't know much about the Italians, but as far as I'm aware the Germans who the US gave high positions to were actually from Germany. The people I'm referring to are Americans of German heritage, who didn't get that treatment. It's not about who had it worst before and after, or to minimize anything, it's just to acknowledge multiple groups were interred and that no one should be forgotten.
@OverthereLook

@@dallasworth8158 But I have a strong suspicion that you brought it up as a way to divert the accusation of racism, by indirectly telling people that the Japanese camps are not due to racism. Sort of discrediting people for calling old America's actions out. These camps were nowhere near as grand or messed up as the Japanese camps, Native conversion camps, or any other race based political imprisonment that went on in this country. The Italians had it pretty good in comparison to others. So did the Irish, despite being put into "projects" which is another form of better internment camps later given to my people (black). I guess my core message is dishonestly diverting attention won't help us solve this nation's biggest domestic issue. Part of solving a problem is by admitting that we have one. This video is about showing how years of propaganda and selective migration has created a very common stereotype for asian people. White as a monolith, in America, was a construction by white people, which benefits them. Yes, there is a great diversity within white cultures, but by calling someone or a group of people "white," we are not disparaging that diversity in the same way that Asian and black people are grouped together by outsiders. Being able to call yourself white in American society did and does give you a lot of social capital, and failing to meet the ethnic, cultural, and phenotypic requirements has historically done harm. For the longest time, white Americans did not need to pace any modifier to their American identity, but the Chinese-Americans of the Mississippi Delta are still considered foreign due entirely to their appearance.

The series actually does falter pretty regularly in regard to stuff like this because they don't care enough about nuance. As you said, it's mainly certain groups that have higher poverty rates, and even then, it can vary by city/region. For average income, household income is certainly higher for asians, but asians also tend to have larger households. Moreover, while asian men make more than white men, they also tend to have higher education levels. On average, they will make less than white man when controlling for those kinds of factors. Main problem is that nobody ever parses out huge difference in the dozens of ethnicities that comprise being Asian. And since there are so many immigrants, how does english proficiency affect stuff like the income differences above?

It might be an oversimplification of one of the article's points, but the authors do argue broadly that "Significantly more APIAs live in poverty than the US average". It's an argument of nuance... If you want to say broadly that APIAs on average are better educated and attain higher wages, you also have to include those "certain nationality groups" which also means that the APIA population as a whole as a higher number of persons in poverty than the national average too. At best, I'd say its a poor generalization of very nuanced argument, but I'd say deliberate lying is a bit of a stretch. It's not like the program is saying APIAs with higher income is a myth. The article's wording itself at least lends the reader to make similar conclusions

Although I love how it ended with a "don't generalize my race" message but that doesn't just go for people with different Asian backgrounds. It goes for people with African backgrounds too. Sure, I understand that most "African-Americans" were brought into the U.S through slavery and don't necessarily know which African country their from. But for those who do know their history, like me, it kind of sucks being generalized when my parents are from two opposite sides of Africa. ... That's all I have to say. I started ranting
@datheamore6395
@datheamore6395 4 жыл бұрын
I don't like being generalized as white either. Everyone assumes that we all had slaves when many of us had ancestors who immigrated here long after slavery was "abolished" in America and were sometimes even treated like a scourge. My mother's side was Scotch-Irish, and my father's side was Ukrainian. If you despised the British Imperialism... they used the Irish as a practice round before they honed their craft. They attempted to destroy the culture and kill the language and they even taxed the air. Many Irish were sent to the Americas as prisoners by Cromwell and were conscripted as indentured servants... they were usually bonded for a few years, but depending on the work they didn't usually live to make it out of the forced contract... it gets interchangeably referred to as slavery but it is not exactly the same as what was done to the Africans because eventually if they survived they would be free. This was before the Great Potato Famine of course. My Mother's ancestors who immigrated to America were carpetbaggers just trying to survive and maybe make enough money to marry the woman they wanted to marry. As for my father's side, they fled to escape Communist rule and were lucky enough to leave before the great hunger of the 1930s... it was a forced famine created by Stalin and it killed millions. It was referred to as Holodomor. I have no idea if there are any surviving family from the old country or if they perished. While some traditions were kept, much was lost because during the 30s, 40s, and 50s, having a culture different from the accepted Christian European culture usually made things difficult for immigrants if they didn't seem pure enough. This is why I can't speak Ukrainian at all and it is why my grandmother insisted that we were all 100% Ukrainian and all of my ancestors were Eastern Orthodox Christians (pretty sure this is impossible statistically and I have a sneaking suspicion that we might have had Jewish ancestors as well). The word slave also originates from the word "Slav." Slavic people were the one of the first groups to be enslaved by the ancient Romans... before that slaves were typically just called servants. I am not saying this to negate the oppression that black people go through in our country but rather, to share my takeaway from all of this. Here is my takeaway: because oppression and conquest often involve rape, it is likely that while I have that Irish and Ukrainian heritage, there is likely also the DNA of the English and the Ancient Roman's as well... essentially the blood of oppressed and oppressor flows within me, and somewhere in everyone's history they likely share the same painful history of power struggles. My point is that it is easy for the oppressed to become the oppressor and vice versa and it then becomes a matter whether or not we think we have to keep choosing those options or decide to break the cycle by just taking the time to love and respect ourselves and each other in healthy ways. I feel like lack of love for self creates oppressors and then the pain is projected upon others. So many try to fix others but don't take the time to heal their own bullshit and as a result, the vicious cycle continues through humanity. We as people often try to take power from others to feel better about ourselves in everyday life as individuals, why would that not happen among all peoples over centuries and millennia? I just happen to look like the oppressor right now, but I am just me. I am no more a caricature than you are. I wish that that is what people saw too instead of the generalized image of being a white person in America. These labels are destructive for everyone, and you are not alone in the feeling of being boxed by generalizations. ❤

It was also primarily Japanese that were put into the internment camps because Japan was much more likely to invade the United States. Japan had already attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor whereas Germany and Italy were unlikely to invade the United States as they were still dealing with Great Britain and the Soviet Union. The United States didn't want Japanese-Americans to help Japan invade the United States through espionage or sabotage. This is why Japanese-Americans living near the West Coast were interned while Japanese-Americans in other parts of the US were for the most part left alone. Americans of German and Italian origin were seen as less of a threat as there was no concern that the United States would be invaded by Germany or Italy. So, in conclusion, the fact that they were treated better than Japanese-Americans wasn't because they were white.

He also tried to demonize America choosing talented immigrants, which makes no sense. It's like saying jobs should hire the first applicant rather than the best suited. The model minority myth has been perpetuated mostly due to Asian countries having a higher standard of learning, such as school being 6 days a week. Look at statistics and it will back it all up. The model minority stereotype does cause some issues, but this guy uses the WRONG method to get there and villainizes people who dont deserve it.

This is talking about America and Americans. Generally if you are Caucasian and American and you are beyond 2nd or 3rd generation caucasian, you just colloquially called "White". The same isn't true for alot asian americans, because generally speaking, they homogeneous in their ethnic makeup. So it would be accurate if a kid's mother, father, and grandparents are all Korean and he is 1st generation american, to be called "Korean" or at least Korean-American. That term would make less sense is his family was a mixture of Asian and Caucausian or Asian sub-Saharan African. The same could be argued to someone of European origin. But there just aren't alot of Caucasian/European immigrants newly coming to America anymore, for a variety of economic reasons. That's why 2nd/3rd/4th generation caucasian immigrants don't refer to themselves as "Italian" or "German", because they aren't culturally really those anymore, even if by some miracle, they, their parents, their grandparents, and their great grandparents are all from the same country. They are so culturally removed from that country and so a part of america culture. The cultural shorthand for a Caucasian immigrant in America is "White".

Not gonna say it's false, but it's a fact many asian culture in general, and japanese in perticular, encourage (sometimes too much) their children to perform. While in north America, kids who do well in school are put down and mocked to a point the smart ones will try to fit by not listening in class and dumbing down, in Japan, they are held in high regards and are closer to be the alpha's of their schools. Often, they will also take part in an activity one would dim "cool", like a team sport, a martial art one or some other club, and they won't be defined by their notes alone. In other words, a smart japanese kid can be considered cool, where for many many years, in american culture, if a guy was smart, that all he was, that how he'd be presented in the media, a weak sissy with barely any friends or girlfriends, so no kids really wanted to emulate him. I myself understood that one could be both cool AND smart when I stumbled on some anime at the age of 18. Was a bit too late to redo my studies tough. So yeah, if we don't take in account the possibility that the smartest japanese were most likely to reproduce and pass on their genes to the next generation, the fact remain that most of them will be culturally more hard working than most. What the main theme of most anime ? Training to reach the top, whatever the discipline you like, you do it with all your strength.

I laugh a lot when asian (specifically Chinese, korean and japanese) success is downplayed and made ambiguous just to fit a certain narrative. They just do better because they want to and have the right priorities in the right places, and that this is the go-to plan of the vast majority. I really hate this mentality that all roads lead to the same destination and that if some didn't make it, its because the others cheated. That is the concept of victim mentality for me

@Hervis Daubeny Was it the gene, the anime or both ? ^^ It IS true that "smart gene" are a lot more debatable than one regarding size or strength. (wich is why I choose not to take this possibility in account) As for anime, peoples underestimate the impact of tv on the way children integrate society values and how it influence their development. If a kid is being told all his life that the most admirable trait is perseverance and hard work, it will affect him one way or another. (he might reject it and do the opposite too) Of course, I'm referring to Japanese peoples born and raised in japan. Those born and raised in USA, while getting some of their moral compass affected by their parent's upbringing, (depending on how much time they can devote to it) will also be affected by USA schools, children, tv and society in general. At this point the result will be pretty similar to a child of a different ethnicity raised in a similar neighborhood.

The way the country is affected is where the difference will be. The cultural difference of an asian born an raised in america will be quite different. I thought the stereotype originated due to many individuals of east Asian ethnicity originating from collectivist cultures where a lot of pressure is put on young people to succeed. Like the Suneung test in south Korea. It certainly seams that way at my uni, they often work harder and achieve more because they are more afraid of failure and disappointing their family (a double edged sword of course with depression anxiety etc).
@HiHi-iu8gf
@HiHi-iu8gf 5 жыл бұрын
I think that has a part in it too. A lot of asian cultures put a lot more pressure in excelling academically and shit. Quite a few east asian countries have higher suicide rates in students because of the effects of overworking and sleep deprivation on mental health, as well as the pressure and stress of having to succeed. I have quite a few asian friends who won't accept anything less than an A in almost everything at school (which kinda sucks for me since our school uses bellcurve marking lol, and I'm asian too. My family isn't *as* pressuring as my aforementioned friends' families, but they certainly do hold me to quite a high standard)

@Viper 47 I mean maybe not "dishonouring", per say, but there definitely is a lot of pressure to not disappoint your family's high standards - at least from my own experience and that of most of my other asian friends - especially those who came over from their respective countries later on.
@funkytikigod7039
@funkytikigod7039 5 жыл бұрын
@Viper 47 I would be hesitant to rule out the role of collectivism, it could be argued that such values are reinforced by the very real demands of how their societies are structured. A family may put pressure on their child with the hope they will succeed in such a competitive environment, therefore the individual may be imbued with a fear they aren't good enough both for society and their family. I also wouldn't say the majority of a population need to commit suicide before you get concerned. Japan and particularly south Korea are very high, particularly if you exclude various 3rd world countries. I'm surprised china isn't that high anymore but maybe Xi fiddles it.

As a Korean-American; my experience with the "Model Minority" stereotype is... well, just like all stereotypes, it's rooted in some interpretation of reality. Frankly even if it started off as a propaganda claim by the US gov't, it's one that they got coincidentally right, because it's still the truth that Asians (South, East, or otherwise) make way more money than Whites, have a higher education rate than Whites, have higher SAT, etc, scores than Whites, etc... That said, I don't like the stereotype because-among other things-it then implies that other nonasian minorities AREN'T "model", and that undoubtedly has all kinds of self-image issues for them. I mean, imagine being told by smart professional-types that, well, you're not Asian, so you're a more worthless minority. Gee, thanks.

Those parents likely went through that stuff in WW2 (Even if it was as children themselves) and felt like they had to prove themselves just to be here. That's why they're so hard on their kids, some part of them deep down is a afraid that their child is going to get deported if they aren't smart enough.
