It seems to be a common agreement that the most unbelievable thing about the movie isn't magic, but that an abuela would ever admit to being wrong.

i feel like the reason people like that don't believe they're wrong is because they never see the *direct consequences* of their impact. she saw it as irrefutable fact that the house broke and their powers died because of her, but most people never see the cracks and thus never think they've done anything wrong.

my family literally has a bruno. Uncle José never really fit in with everyone and felt things too strongly, and it led to him falling in with a bad crowd. he took his own life at 17, and this is something that is NEVER discussed in our family. I've barely seen more than a dozen photos of him, including the one in my room. You can't talk to abuela about him either, she never got over the pain of losing him. it made my mom paranoid about my own struggles with depression, and she's always said he watches over me and my siblings. we just can't bring our Bruno home.

I’ve seen a lot people say that the reason Mirabel doesn’t get a gift is because she’ll be the keeper of the miracle after her grandmother passes and that she’ll be the new person in charge. The miracle/candle needs someone to keep the magic alive and that job will pass on to Mirabel :)
@anaisluna22
@anaisluna22 2 жыл бұрын
I could definitely see that. I also think that maybe the casita is mirabel’s abuelito because it was born out of his sacrifice for the community and there a lot of hints like with the butterflies that her abuelito is still around watching over them.

@@nicolettemaloy Not just Mirabel; Alma also talks to the house. And while I don't agree that Casita is Pedro (It didn't react at all when Alma was talking to Pedro's picture in the locket), Mirabelle is definitely the new keeper of the house; that's why the front door is HER door, with her front and centre with the family behind her. But also, an interesting theory is that Alma is the source of the gift. When she lost her husband, her latent magic flooded out of her and into the candle; her magic was expended to create the candle and everything it did, Casita included, but she retained a link to it- it was her Casita, so the cracks back then, if any, were hers. Then comes Mirabelle's gift ceremony. Casita (Or rather, the magic behind it) bestows gifts based on the personality of the child. Bruno thinks ahead, Camillo is a bit of a prankster imitating people, Dolores is observant etc. In Mirabel, it saw a future matron of the house, it saw her compassion and ability to lead her family. And so the gift it gave to her was different; her door merged with the house and the link, similar to that of Alma, was established with Mirabelle. This was the setup to allow Mirabelle to restore Casita later in the story- after all, the magic gave Bruno the ability to see the future; it saw its own destruction and found a way to come back from, essentially, the dead.

Watch her face when she says five babies she is lying and being evil it is to show Pepe's family is breaking too, as the story really only focus's on Julieta's family. Also at the same time this is the first time we see Isabela does not have full control of her powers, a white flower in the hair, and the abuela wanting perfection picks it away. Like when Isa breaks Mariano's nose (twice) that is her subconscious controlling the powers. Dolores was 11 when Bruno went into the walls old enough to know rats do not talk, and she kept Bruni a secret, she is amazing at keeping secrets, but she lies about the five babies and she tells the secret of the magic at the worse time, she wants Mariano and wants to cause damage. it is another indication of the family breaking, and you have to think of how many other things she has told or not told that damage the family.

She has the deepest connection to the house and she has the ability to see the world through the eyes of others, which is why she is present throughout all the songs like surface pressure, we don't talk about Bruno and what else can i do. in short, she is gifted, without having to have a "magical" gift.

"Why would she tell everyone? What's her motive?" I have watch this movie many times and I feel like I keep learning new things. Antonio got the gift of talking to animals because he felt lonely, wanted friends, and loved animals. So time to reflect on others. Delores most likely got her gift because she is obsessed with gossip, eavesdropping, and knowing everything. So it makes sense she would tell everyone. Bruno is an interesting concept since the famous quote of "Depression is living in the past, and anxiety is living in the future." Bruno must have anxiety issues and obsessed about the future. Thus he can see the future now. Mirabel cared more about family than anything else. She wanted to keep her family together and loves all of them deeply. Thus no power was granted as a power. She learned to rely on instincts and thoughts over abilities. Only one I can't really figure out is Pepa. Not sure what would cause someone to get the power of a cloud attached to emotions.

When the end finds her surrounded by a Hailstorm, she and Felix are dancing happily and Luisa holds up her drink to add Ice.

I think the triplets got the gift to help rebuild the community - since they just about fled and had to leave everything behind. Since they get the powers at 5 - it looks like took 5 year to build the whole village/city - Pepa controls the wheather (so she can help grow crops and feed everyone), Julieta can heal injuries (so she could help the people who got hurt building/protecting and raising the new generation), Bruno can see the future (he could then see if there was any other risk of a new invasion or armed groups arriving near their village - you can see when the miracle takes life, if grows mountains to protect all those people with Alma and the baby triplets)

I"ve watch many reaction videos on Encanto, maybe because the immigrant family themes resonated so much with me. I too can so clearly recognize the toxicity of generational trauma and family expectations. Luna I wanted to thank you for sharing that perspective in your reactions. It's a travesty Stephanie Beatriz isn't awarded somehow - the pain, the longing, of Mirabel's speech to Abuela is some of finest acting I've seen, or the earnest desperation she conveys when she busts into Antonio's powers party to alert the family of the house cracks. Honest and raw emotional punches.

Its not uncommon to find colombians with every color hair and different skin tones. We are not homogenous. This doesn't happen in every family but, for example, my grandfather is blond with blue eyes, my uncles by my mom's side have brown hair with blue or green eyes. While my cousins have every type of hair color from dark brown to blond. Me and my brothers have different skin colors and none of us have blue or green eyes. My little brother has darker skin with curly brown hair and my granpa, by my father side, had deep dark beautiful skin color. That's the beauty of colombian's diversity.

Like most people they’ve theorized the reason Miabel didn’t get a gift was because she’s destined to be Abuela’s heir after she is gone. Part of me is hoping the this becomes a series, like they did with Tangled. Though the downside would be that a series wouldn’t happen until at best between 2025-2030. And that’s if they even thought about doing a series.

"Maybe their powers are metaphors for their role in the family..." - I've watched a couple of family therapists react to this movie, and it looks like you're dead on! There are a handful of roles that people tend to fit into in a family's dynamics, and each of these roles corresponds *very* neatly to one of the Madrigals. Either the writers did their homework, or they were just extremely insightful; props to them either way!

9:20 I agree! I also think Camilo's a people pleaser. Like he will become what you need him to be. Dolores hears evrything I feel like she's the person evryone rants too only she doesn't get a choice she will always know about evryone's struggle wether she wants to or not. Isabela as the oldest was probably always told to be a good example and it turned to her having to be perfect to get validation and just afraid to step out of the mold. Julietta growing up (sorry if I spelled it wrong) probably was always the one to heal her mother as in try to make her feel better. And now she's the one who has to always make it better. If someone's hurt it's her job to help, keep evryone healthy and happy. She's the main care taker of the family. (And the village considering she has to mass produce her food to heal the villagers. So she doesn't have time to cook fancy or elaborate recipes, she hast to keep it as bland and simple as possible.) I could go on but I'm gonna stop here.

I went into this psyched because I am from Barbados and I spent 6 weeks in Colombia in uni. So as a West-Indian/Latina/Columbian I was ready. I am sooooo happy with how it turned out. Their are so many teeny things that feel so local to me, like Camilo's finger snap when Antonio explores his room and Mirabel pointing to Antonio's gift with her mouth. Those are things I do and I never see them anywhere. Also, I love how ambiguous the movie is. Everybody has a different opinion on Mirabel. I feel like this is the most timeless thing Disney has ever created. Also, I have seen this film 9 times... 6 in Japanese, 3 in Spanish... and Dos Oruguitas gut punches me every time. I only know Sebastian Yatra from being featured in everybody else's song, but I hope this gives him bigger presence on the non-hispanic scene.

@@ajmosutra7667 well is kinda hard for me to point all the places in the movie that this happens, but I gess the big one is easy. You see this type of family like the Madrigals are a tipical family for us, so for instance, the way abuela talks to Mirabel made a lot of reactors angry with abuela and they took until oruguitas to more or less forguive her. But honestly, most older women in the family is going to speak to you like that if you're woman in a latin family so no hard feelings against abuela, she was just being the abuela. Of course this is a very simplified explanation, but if you compared her reaction to others you'll see what I mean I think.

One thing i wished happened in this movie is that they ACTUALLY apologize to Bruno for making him feel irrelevant and a burden to the family. They made him feel like his gift only brings harm to the family and they blamed everything on him, when in reality, all he does is look into their future. I was just disappointed that no one, not even abuela apologized to Bruno, but overall, the movie does well at representing unspoken conflicts between families. :))

This was SUCH an incredible movie about intergenerational trauma in immigrant families ❤️ Your emotional reaction to this movie reminded me of mine when I first saw it. The message of this movie is so important. I love how the final scenes confirm that Mirabel had a power all along -- as you said, she was the one who could get everyone to open up and being themselves. She was the heart of the family. Her first door ceremony didn't work because it was the wrong door - her door is the front door because her room is the whole house, because just like the "animal guy" Antonio got a jungle room and Isabella got her fields of plants, Mirabel, as the heart of the family, gets Casita, filled with her family themselves. Just like how the other doors had the person in the middle and etched brighter, with the depiction of their power etched more lightly around them, Mirabel was brightest on the front door, her family etched more lightly around her as the depiction of her power. She's the next Abuela and the new Candle.

This was a really enjoyable video and you had some great insights from the story! Your perspective is very interesting. I'm latina too, albeit brazilian not colombian and as surprising as it might sound there were so many little details that my family could relate to watching this movie as well, even though we are not hispanic and our people are not close with Colombia and its people. It felt personal to us too. Even down to the gestures, vibes and the facial expressions or props, such as Camilo snapping his fingers when he thought Antonio's room was cool, the family tropes, the being able to love your family even with their flaws, jealousy, toxicitiy, gossiping about you behind your back and stuff like that; the coffee grinding machine when the family was having breakfast, and the look Abuelita gave Mirabel when she left the party and saw no cracks, as if telling her "we'll talk about this later in private" (more like i'm gonna yell at you later), everything just felt so familiar. You can tell how many latinos worked on this because there are tiny details everywhere only we could know and think to include in a movie, and some of course only Colombian people could know too.

I've always theorized that Dolores only told everyone about what she overheard from Augustine and Mirabel because she saw it as an opportunity to disrupt the proposal, since she likes Mariano. I back this up with the fact she knew Bruno was still living in Casita but never said anything, meaning she's more than capable of keeping huge secrets to herself, but this one presented an opportunity to prolong the inevitable and she wouldn't have to watch the man she loves marry her cousin just yet. Even if that throws Mirabel under the bus and upsets Isabella.

From my perspective, Delores told everyone because of the "empath trope". If you watch a lot of movies with empaths, or imagine yourself in their shoes, it will raise the question "how do they cope". I think, when you get too much information in your head, the best way to cope is to give it away. Especially, if you got one huge chunk that you just can't stop thinking about. Some thoughts need time and processing, like when you need to tell your friend\close one about the problem at work that bothers you every day, and it gets easier when you do.

The yellow butterfly is with Pedro in all his scenes, then when he dies it moves to the candle, and then is Mirabel, if you read 100 years of solitude, the yellow butterflies represent infinite love and hope for the future. The miracle starts because the grandfather sacrifices himself with infinite love for his children and hope for their future. The house understands that is Mirabel's role in the family she is the heart she is the centre of the home, the house already knows the house is breaking due to the unreasonable expectations for everyone to be perfect in their roles. "make your family proud!" it is why she gets no "gift" The butterfly symbols in the kitchen and elsewhere in the house change colour as the light of the day shine though them, showing you what else is going on around, all nod to how Gabriel García Márquez uses butterflies to represent things in both Cien años de soledad, and his other writings, originally the idea of the story for encanto was to be over 100 years but was shortened to make the movie shorter... this whole movie is a love letter to Gabriel Márquez who not only wrote one of the most important pieces of literature in Colombia, the gold standard in Magical Realism but also he later won the noble prize for literature. There are so many other references to the culture here, many that Colombians watch accept as normal life and do not realise is not understood by others, from Mirabel pointing under the bed using her lips not her fingers, Camilo doing the finger snapping in Antonio's room (there is always someone doing that!), too Felix doing the throat hand movement to tell Mirabel to shut up, or her father saying "miércoles" the list goes on and on or Camilo singing about Bruno's 7 ft frame, as the last time he saw Bruno, Camilo was only 6 years old so of course his Tio would look huge to him. But you should read Cien años de soledad again, everyone reads at school but it is a school project, same as Shakespeare, as an adult and because you want to read it, you will take so much more from the story. Also if you had not realised the immigration that happens that causes the Encanto to form is the the 1,000 days war, ask your grandmother about it, so that is 1890's to 1900 and then the Encanto is separated from the rest of the country for the next 50 years they are disconnected from the rest of Colombia. There is so much more to unpack, and i am sure that many people will do essays on its significance. then there is the Caño Cristales they are crossing at the beginning in the Serrania de la Macarena province of Meta, matches very well with the song over the top of it. plus the colour change of the river only happens for five months of the year. Or that at Mariano's proposal they are eating Ajiaco the list goes on and on. I enjoyed your reaction

It really is an amazing, heartwarming... and heartbreaking movie. I do feel that it is rather interesting that Disney has tackled intergenerational trauma handled in unhealthy ways in both of their recent movies set in Latino families... but at the same time, I have to say that I absolutely love how this one didn't have a villain. Not one present in the modern-day, at least. The problem is the improperly resolved trauma, and that is every bit as big of a problem as some Ernesto or Gaston. In some ways, it is worse because there's no one able to be faced as the focus of the trauma. Not having a concrete villain doesn't give you a figurehead that you can face down with... which is its own kind of disempowering.

I'm not Colombian or even Latino, but I did grow up with generational trauma and I see so much of my mom in Abuela and so much of myself in Mirabel. everything she does reminds me so much of me as a person and what I did to stand up to my mother. and what I couldn't do. I am the black sheep because I was the only one brave enough to say "this is wrong." and...y'know, my mother will likely never admit that she was wrong. she will never admit that she hurt me. so seeing her be able to get that, it's so bittersweet. but I think it's important. this movie is incredibly special for me.

During Delores part in We don’t talk about Bruno if you pay attention to the balcony behind her as she’s moving mirabelle around you can see Bruno up there jamming to the song lol she knows he’s there so she’s making sure mirabelle can’t see him. I didn’t notice it til someone pointed it out and I had to go watch now I can’t unsee it!
