I think what's different about this Disney movie is that it starts out where most Disney movies END. In the past, the whole _point_ of the Disney movie would BE Mirabel "discovering" that she doesn't need a gift to be special. But in this movie, she starts out already knowing that. So, what could be wrong? Well, it turns out the _positivity_ is wrong. Everything is cracking, and because everyone in the family knows they have to be positive, helpful, serving, and... _perfect,_ no one addresses the generational trauma. That's _SO much deeper_ than most of the messages of Disney's recent movies. They've all been obvious from the first ten minutes. Not this one. My family is healthy now, thank God, but for most of my childhood and teens, we were very much a "perfect on the outside" family, and we all felt the pressure of maintaining that image. My older sister couldn't handle it, so she rebelled and left, and when that was swept under the rug, *_*I*_* was swept into the position of the oldest sister. "Surface Pressure" and the plight of the two oldest daughters are so relatable to me: feeling like I had to hold everyone together by being the perfect and good and strong and Right daughter my parents needed. MAN, this movie got me. AND DISNEY GOT THEIR MAGIC BACK. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

Thank you for this. I have a hard time watching movies and trying to figure out their "deeper meaning like the main meaning to why the events happened the way they did (it's part of my disability, I'm not great with the "abstract"), I mean, I love watching movies, but my main focus is on other things rather than the main point of it all. There's one thing about Surface Pressure I have a love/hate with and its the line 'watch her bend but never break' Because we do break. As an oldest sister myself I did break mentally and emotionally, and I'm not where I want to be right now in life (though I'm working on it!) I hate that some things got passed to my younger sister for the brief period I was gone. I'm back now and it's all back on me.

I always like seeing the turn around after Abuela's story is shown. I think we're so used to there being a tangible villain that it's easy to decide that she's the worst, a terrible person putting so much pressure on the family. Then to see her perspective and realize it's not so black and white.

The reason why the husbands are not easily forgotten is because they aren't expected to be special in anyway. Mirabel was expected to be "special" and have a gift, but she didn't get one making her seem very unremarkable to everyone else. It's the same case with children of celebrities. Most children are allowed to be normal, but if you are the child of a celebrity you are expected to be just as special as them or you'll be constantly compared to your gifted parents. You aren't allowed to be normal. Lastly, Isabela's plant gift is actually one of the most powerful gifts you can get. It's right up there with Tia Pepa's gift. Any power that gives you control over Mother Nature is automatically a very powerful gift. It's a reason why characters like Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing are terrifyingly strong.

I have family that is Colombian but I personally am not Colombian (I'm Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban) and for me I found myself laughing, crying and pretty much a ball of emotions watching the movie. The story, the motivations of the characters, even down to the representation of what the family looks like and even their personalities resonanted so deeply with me because I can honestly relate to this. I've always found it extremely difficult expressing what it's like to be from my culture with the experiences that my family has gone through and after watching this movie I genuinely feel like I could just share the movie with people as a means of explanation. (The story of the grandfather dying protecting his family as they were running away for a better life. My own grandmother and great grandmother ran from Cuba when Fidel took over. They wouldn't talk about my great grandfather so when they both passed they took those secrets with them and I will never know.)

This was such an incredible story of intergenerational trauma the pressure 2nd and 3rd gen kids can feel to live up to the sacrifices their immigrant and refugee parents made. I know that there have been so many times when I have been hurt, only to realize that I was feeling the effects of unaddressed trauma of my parents. And I LOVE that the reason Mirabel didn't get a door and a room was because the whole house was her room and her door was the front door (if you look closely, you can see that Mirabel is etched in brighter light on the front door than everyone else, and combined with how she's centered on it, it means that her family, all around her and in the slight background, are the representation of her power, just like the other doors have the person in the center and the representation of their power all around them). Mirabel's power is to be the new Candle, and like you said, to be the life of the house and the heart of her family, which we've seen demonstrated through the whole story in how she relates to everyone and gets them to open up and supports them, and (I think) to eventually be the new head of the community the way Abuela was. I loved your reaction, I LOVED the music (I've had Dos Orugitas playing on repeat haha) and I love how emotional you became over it, and how it touched your heart.

I love all of the "open your eyes" references throughout the movie. We first see it in the very beginning when Abuela tells Mirabel to open her eyes and see the candle. The next time we see it is during "Waiting On A Miracle" when Mirabel is telling Abuela to open her eyes and see that Mirabel can't stay on the side. We see it again when Abuela is talking to the picture of Abuelo and asks him to open her eyes to why the house is cracking. The last time we see it is in the final song of the film when Abuela says to Mirabel "Open your eyes. What do you see?" and I think the film does a very good job of coming full circle with that. Another thing that struck me is that in the beginning of the movie when Mirabel asks Abuela what her gift will be Abuela says, "whatever gift awaits, it will be just as special as you" (or something along those lines). Later, when Antonio gets his gift, Abuela goes up to him and says "a gift just as special as you." Mirabel looks happy until Abuela says this, and then she starts getting sad (obviously not being included in the picture also made her sad) and I think it's reminding her of when she didn't get a gift. Also fun fact: Bruno's name was originally going to be Oscar, but Lin Manuel-Miranda asked to change it so he could include the line "we don't talk about Bruno no no no"

Ay dios mio, llore! My family immigrated from Guatemala when I was seven to the US, and I knew nothing of the language and being put in school where everything was different and kids were bullies because I wasn't American has scarred me to this day. As the eldest but also child of an immigrant, I had to be strong, to be perfect with grades, to learn english (don't speak Spanish, I was told by school councilors), smart and aspire to be the first in my family to go to college and earn a living. However, I wasn't very academically smart (wtf No Child Left Behind shit testing). My father tells us stories of his growing up in unimaginable poverty, and his dreams of being a singer, and of crossing the border with his brothers at 15. My parents have given all they could and still grind at work to support us, so the guilt of not being the best is real. Luisa and Isabella really spoke to me. There would always e a power struggle in the government and countless groups fighting each other, and how many of his cousins died during those civil wars. And unfortunate it has all lead to this day, where most of my family has escaped to other countries in South America, although my grandmother, aunts and uncle are still there. And even though my father send food and medicine to my abuela, not much will reach her. I love everything about this movie, even the flaws of the characters. And the reason why you can tell the music sounds Colombian-themed is because it IS Colombian-themed. Lin-Manuel always does his research to make his music authentic as heck. During the first song, you can literally see a house that says Colombia on the side of it. Lol And just a little trivia - Casita (aka Abuelo) plans everything, even the future. Mirabel’s outfit consists of mariposas, and her skirt has a candle, which has me wondering that Casita makes their wardrobe. This outfit basically tells us what her Gift is - the new Matriarch. Her Abuela never had a Gift when the miracle happened.

Well is not a Disney story tho... Sadly lots of Latin american countries have been through the same thing (forced displacement). And unfortunately Colombia has the highest number of internally desplaced people in the world because of armed conflict 😞. I believe this story happens during "la violencia" in Colombia (1948 y 1958).

For some reason I always thought that the reason the house was brought to life was because the house has the spirit of Pedro(Abuela's significant other). the reason why it cracked was because Pedro wanted to open Abuela's eyes and show her why she got the miracle. Encanto has comedy, an amazing soundtrack, character development, relatable family problems, and the characters themselves!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

I just saw Encanto a few hours ago and literally never cried from any movie (animated or not) since Pixar's Inside Out I may not be South American (I'm asian btw), but what Maribel went thru hit too close to home. About proving one's self worth, being sort of the black sheep in the family and thinking you would never measure up to such unbelievable high standards What a beautiful movie

The Bruno thing is actually a coincidence. Someone who worked on Luca I think was named Bruno so they put that in as a joke. And originally in Encanto Bruno's name would be Oscar but they changed it for "we don't talk about Bruno no no no" Also fun fact: all the actors in this film are Hispanic

Our neighbors when I was a baby were from Venezuela. They taught my dad how to make what they called café con leche. (I know there are about a thousand drinks by that name out there). Its basically coffee brewed directly in milk. The grounds are literally boiled in the milk. Its really good. My dad let me try it when I was five, I've loved coffee ever since. People say coffee is an acquired taste? Yeah, well I 'acquired' it the first time I tasted it. Doesn't need to be complicated either. Just with cream or milk. Sometimes some honey. (The cafe con leche thing is a bit time consuming so I don't do it very often)

This movie taught me a very valuable lesson: We all have a purpose in life and that we play a very important role in this world as well as that the fact that we can't discover our gift at a young age doesn't mean that we aren't special, instead, it means that our gift or talent is way more special than what we can imagine. In addition to that, it teaches us how special our family is and that they are the foundation of who we are. A very beautiful movie with a strong message.

I think you nailed it when you said abuela values the powers more than the people. That's why she drove Bruno away and started to damage the miracle. Mirabel values the people and relationships more than the power because she doesn't have a power, so she was able to bring the family back together. Bruno is voiced by one of my favorite character actors.

5:45 I think (And I might be wrong here) but even though Abuela doesn't have a clear power, if you pay attention you can notice that she and older Mirabel are the only ones that can communicate with the house and influence its behavior, the times the house helps the others it's by choice as they already have their own gifts to do everything else, so you could see it as the extension of the matriarchs powers taking care of the family as well as sustaining the magic that gives them all their abilities, aka the biggest power, love

*Before the movie starts* Okay, Disney, I know you're going to try and gut punch me again. Well, it won't work this time. I'm as solid as a boulder. You will not get any tears from me today! *After the movie ends* Nope, still haven't won... *drying my darn eyes* Seriously though, this hit me hard. I'm not Latino, but I do come from a large family, and to see how fractured this family really was and what the grandmother went through, that was tough. It kind of resonated with me because the grandmother kind of reminded me of my own who passed back in 2017. She wasn't overly strict like her, but she did whatever she could to keep the family tight and together. But yeah, this was a fantastic movie. I honestly wasn't expecting much after seeing the trailers, but this was a very pleasant surprise.

i'm white and not latina, but it hurts how much i relate to mirabel's feeling of being "useless" or in the way bc she isn't special. i'm not as cool and confident as mirabel is, i'm not good with kids, i'm anxious, and have a lot of issues with my step-dad being verbally (occasionally physically) abusive when i was younger (we have a better relationship now and he's gone to therapy and has been diagnosed with autism so it explains a lot - plus his parents weren't great with that sort of thing either - but i hate being called useless or stupid partly because of him and have a rlly strong reaction to being called those things) and waiting on a miracle rlly got to me immediately bc i get that feeling of not living up to peoples expectations, having to swallow everything down so as not to upset people etc. i think it's wonderful anyone can relate to and see themselves in each of the characters in this, even if you're not part of the same culture.

I think it's the only Disney movie when everyone can identify to a character and not only the hero. I think part of what kept Mirabel so positive is she DID have a majority of her family that treated her well - specefically Luisa (her strong sister), her older cousin Dolores, her aunt and uncle Pepe and Felix, her parents, and (later on) her baby cousin Antonio, as well as the majority of the town. It was mostly her Abuela, and her sister Isabella, that put her down. Her middle cousin, the shapeshifter, seemed to be more neutral to her. Meanwhile, during the climax sequence, where we see what really happened to the grandfather, that was positively the most perfect expression of grief and loss I have ever seen on a character in any medium. EVER.
