My theory is that Pepa was never learned to process her emotions, since she was always told to "calm down" and "stop being sad/angry/etc." No wonder she's always a nervous wreck!

Isn’t that a thing that women are told, that their emotions are “over the top and effecting others”? I don’t know, that’s the sort of symbolism I got. Just as we can relate to Luisa as having to ‘carry everything’ without complaints, be beautiful and perfect all the time like Isabella and fix things like Juiletta Maybe I’m overthinking, lucky I don’t control the weather

@@TequilaPrincessMx There is a simple explanation why Isabella has straight hair. It's not actually straight, she uses a straightener on her hair to make herself look more 'perfect'... likely because of social prejudices against curly hair. That's my guess at least.

That makes sense. But i also think she could have straight hair because of Abuela. Alma had straight hair when she was young,in fact both her and Pedro did and sometimes genetics work that way,we sometimes look a lot like our grandparents or aunts and uncles and if you think about it she looks like Abuela and even the fact that she looks like her shows how much perfect she wanted to be,that she was just like the perfection is person...abuela.

@@claricesilva2700 apologies if i read this wrong, but i do disagree with the idea that Alma sees herself as a template of perfection. She was of course projecting onto Isabela largely due to her being her first grandchild and resembling her so much, but the pressure on Isabela wasn't to be perfect LIKE Alma, but to have the potentially perfect life Alma had stolen from her.

One thing I noticed is in the scene where Casita gets destroyed, all the other kids who were trying to get the candle were relying solely on their gifts. Isabella with her vines and Camilo with his shape shifting. When they lost their gifts they couldn’t do anything, cause it was all they knew. Mirabel was able to make it to the candle because she used her own strength and wits.

Isabella's hair does actually make sense. Like you mentioned, her father has it, her mother doesn't, and it's a recessive gene. So, it is entirely possible that Julieta has both a curly and straight hair gene, and has just passed down the curly gene to both Mirabel and Luisa, while her recessive straight gene got passed to Isabella. Since Mirabel's father has straight hair, then he would be giving the straight gene to all the kids, so Isabella ends up with straight hair.

@@Lunarayz.photos we don't actually know Alma's hair is straight. In my family my maternal grandmother always styled her hair to look less curly. When she was younger she straightened it and when she was a grandmother she would use rollers to style her curls into the same look. There is an amazing amount of subtle details and nuances that foreshadow Isabela's later character development. You noticed Abuela removing the one imperfect white flower, but there's an utter wealth of expressions and meaning in that scene beyond that-- the sheer panic and discomfort on her face at the idea of having five kids with Mariano, snapping out of it as Abuela picks off the flower and smiling genuinely at her praise, then smiling more nervously/falsely as Abuela speaks of her expectations while straightening her posture and fixing her hair at the same time-- just, wow. I've seen plenty of people mention the flower, but I've never seen anyone talk about that whole fascinating and heartbreaking progression. Then there's the part in "The Family Madrigal" where Isabela is walking past Mariano and deliberately turns her head away from him, her half-hearted dancing with him at Antonio's celebration, her repeatedly singing "I'm fine" during the polyphonic section of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" as if she's trying to convince herself, her wide-eyed nervous reaction when Mirabel starts trying to rush the proposal along, the close-up on her extremely strained smile as Mariano proposes (she literally looks like someone is holding a gun to her head and threatening to shoot if she doesn't smile as hard as she possibly can) (...) it's awe-inducing how expressive she is and how many of these little details there are, and I know I'm missing at least a couple more that I can't recall off the top of my head. And *then* there's the signs that Mirabel's feelings about Isabela are more complex and ambivalent than her outwardly unimpressed reactions show. In "The Family Madrigal", there isn't even a hint of irony or resentment when she praises Isabela and calls her "the perfect golden child"; you'd never know their relationship is actually quite strained from her tone and demeanor right there. (Isabela's room is also the only one that Mirabel goes inside while waking the whole family up in the first part of the song, but while I'm sure that was a deliberate choice, I don't know what to make of it given that Mirabel seems to avoid interacting with her otherwise.) In "Waiting for a Miracle", there are not one but two times where Mirabel looks like she wants to reach out to Isabela but stops with a dejected look (comparatively, Mirabel does reach out and touch her mother, aunt, *and* Abuela, but doesn't reach out to Luisa at all), plus there's the line in the second half where she's clearly referencing her sisters as she spins around with colored lights blooming around her (mimicking what Isabela did when she was introduced). That's only further hinted at by what she says to Bruno after she finds out she has to hug Isabela to fix the miracle-- or rather, what she doesn't say. She doesn't say, "I don't want to hug Isabela." She says "Isabela will never hug me." She doesn't say "I hate Isabela" or even "We hate each other". She says "[Isabela] hates me". Then that frustrated rant that's obviously masking her nerves-- she puts on a good show, but beneath the jealousy and resentment, the clues clearly add up to the conclusion that Mirabel really admires and wants a better relationship with her sister; she just doesn't think it'll ever happen. I understand the writers revealed that they were close as children, too, which only makes it more tragic (and more joyous that they finally reconciled). I love the entire Family Madrigal to pieces, but I have to admit that my favorites are Mirabel and Isabela (as is probably clear by now), and I really wish the movie'd had more time to properly flesh out their relationship beyond what was absolutely necessary to make "What Else Can I Do?" work. A real heart-to-heart (and a real apology from Isabela) would've been great, too-- I think "WECID?" is supposed to fill both of those roles but it's too focused on Isabela's self-discovery to feel that way. Her subsequent failure to stand up to Abuela for Mirabel's sake afterward (while necessary for the story to conclude the way it did and tragically realistic besides) doesn't exactly make it feel better. Still, I love what's there already, and I could probably talk about them all day. I mean, there's that moment in "WECID?" when Isabela sings "I want to feel the shiver of something new"-- that parallels what Mirabel sang in "Waiting for a Miracle", and she even sang that right as she was looking at Isabela too! Mirabel's expression just *changes* when she hears that, and you can tell that's the exact moment she realized how deeply she misjudged Isabela and fully shifted from goal-oriented "I need to hug Isabela for the miracle" mode to empathetic "I actually care about your pain and struggles" mode. I just (...) I love this movie.

This makes the difference in the russian lyrics of WECID even more interesting. While in the original Isa sings "I owe it all to you" in the russian version she straight up says "I love you" and that as they are hugging and now I am crying. I can understand people not buying into the reconciliation. There was no real apology for Isas very clear aweful behavior to her sister (which could also be amplified by abuela subconsciously pitting the perfect and the ungifted against each other) and she also right away backed away and didnt stand up for Mirabel, which makes it seem even worse, but to me its almost more realistic. Reconciliation doesnt happen in the blink of an eye and I am sure that there is still some tension between the sisters but the first step was definitely made. For the short runtime the movie had it was definitely amazing.

nice catch on the room thing. it seems like despite their strained relationship, mirabel and isabela still have a sisterly connection to the point where mirabel is perfectly fine with just walking into her room (without isabela questioning it) and most likely vice versa. i wouldnt be surprised if theyre both that way with luisa as well

@@TequilaPrincessMx To be fair, given that he left without any explanations, I think there was a lot of pain on their side too. Pepa has a very harsh reaction to even hearing Bruno's name, and yet was the first to run up and hug him when he came back (I get the vibe that they used to be quite close before Bruno left, actually). Abuela shows similar signs when she blames Mirabel for Bruno leaving one minute and claims Bruno didn't care at all the next-- those are the irrational sentiments of someone who never fully made sense of a loved one's perceived abandonment, not someone who never cared at all. This isn't to blame Bruno for leaving-- he made the best decision available to him at the time, and he wouldn't have felt the need to leave if his family treated him better and were more willing to actually listen to him-- but I don't think their desire to avoid talking about Bruno came from a place of cruelty or apathy at all.

I remember watching this and finding one of the most expressive characters in the movie was the Casita and thinking the Casita was the spirit of Pedro. It looks after the family and protects them when the house falls apart like how Pedro protected the family before he died. It would also explain why Maribel didn’t get a room as Maribels gift is taking care of the family, like Pedro, so her ’room’ is the entire house.

Her younger self kind of looks like isabella, with the straight hair, and Brunos prophecy about the hug could have actually been the hug w abuela as well, since the magic was destroyed when she argued with abuela, and the healing took place near the butterfly (which was in the prophecy as well).

I loved seeing your insight on this film. It's become one of my all time favourites. You asked a few times why Isabela is the only one with straight hair, but if you look at Abuela Alma, she also has the same. In fact, Isa has the same profile as Abeula and as you pointed out, Mariano is very alike with Abuelo Pedro. My theory is that Abuela sees a lot of herself in Isa and Mariano was the perfect match for Isa to marry so that they could have the future she was robbed of having with her Pedro. I feel like the design choices they made were very intentional when it comes to those two characters in particular as a way of visual storytelling and hinting at where Abuela's thoughts/POV might lie. I love that Mirabelle's "power" was her empathy and love and hope for her family. Her spirit and willingness to see her family for who they truly were was what was ultimately able to heal the family in a much deeper way than even Julieta's gift. In my opinion, Mirabel is the embodiment of the candle, a candle that some speculate held Pedro's spirit of hope and sacrifice, and that her love and spirit is what now provides the magic for her family. It's a beautiful film and so full of meaning and culture and I am so happy you enjoyed it.

I so agree with with your theory of Abuela seeing herself on Isabela and wanting a second chance with a Pedro look-alike... took me editing and watching it with my parents to notice Abuela' straight her... I feel for her, she had to lead a new community of refugees, starting from the ground up (very literally) alone, with triplets! They will defend themselves if threatened by animals or humans, especially if they have babies. Baby Tapirs resemble watermelons with a speckled and stripe pattern as camouflage in the rainforest. I'm not from a latin family but I can tell you my grandma sure has strong opinions over the family. I related a lot to this movie. She's definitely the matriarch and we all seek her approval. I was just out with my sister because she was shopping for a wedding dress and she invited our grandma. In the end, she ended up really liking this strapless dress with this gorgeous sweetheart neckline. It really fit her body type and she looked gorgeous in everything but she was really concerned about our Grandma's opinion. She said it looked beautiful on her and she ended up picking that dress. But I'm sitting in the back with my mom and grandma and they're whispering to each other. In truth, my grandma was really disappointed that she picked that dress. She didn't feel it was right to wear it to church. My sister originally wanted to have a wedding at a beautiful hotel but my mom and grandma ended up ganging up on her for that and made her agree to a church. I tried telling her that it's her wedding and she deserves to have what she wants. This is a once in a lifetime kind of thing and she should go all out since it's her day. But pleasing the family tends to have a very big influence on her, as well as me. I can say that as I've gotten older I've started to move away from it but my family means a lot to me. I have much closer relationships with my aunts, uncles, and cousins than many other people have and family is one of my core values. I dunno why I typed all of that. All well.

I loved this Movie so much it was so heartwarming🥲. I loved the message it sent out and my family loved it also. And I love the X-Men movies also they are so good and don't get enough credit. Also incase you are still wondering that one animal you saw is called a Tapir it is a vegetarian that looks like a pig and swims like a hippo but is actually a relative of both the Horse and the Rhino. And my mom always made soups 😋🥣

She's not despicable, she didn't want people to think the family was getting weaker, latin families tend to care too much about what people think of them, as the cracks were no longer visible she wanted to pretend (even for herself I think) that everything was perfect... she was selfish, that I do believe

This movie, really just called out my bad habits on handling things, I've tried to be perfect, I've tried to keep how I feel secret and feeling useless if I can't do anything to help and I would get blamed for everything before by other family members without doing anything. But about Isabela she reminds me soooo much of my older sister Mia, but she considers me the "golden child" and I just thought it was ironic.

I think the reason Pepa freaked out so much on her wedding day was because Bruno said “It looks like rain.” Which to some that means “It looks like a bad marriage.” So in Pepa’s eyes Bruno had a vision and said her marriage wasn’t going to last. I kinda see this as Bruno’s fault only because he made that joke to his sister who he knew had anxiety. Not hating on Bruno he just should’ve known better.

It's impossible to control yourself ALL the time! She's his sister, I'm sure when they were little kids they teased each other and argued, and he probably even figured out ways to gently tease her as they grew up with their gifts. Everyone was probably on edge about the wedding and even a little gentle humor or an oblique friendly gesture was too much at the moment.

3:30 Actually its not, especially considering they would be close to newborn size. You can actually see this in real life in the news reports about Pamela Zeinoun, a nurse in Beirut credited with saving 3 babies during the explosion from 2020 and carrying them 3 miles to safety. Now, yes, Pamela carried the babies with their faces towards her chest, but you cant do that in the movie cause then the audience wouldnt be able to connect with them through their adorable faces. Also; Actually both Pedro and Alma have straight hair as well as Agustin so its much more likely that Isabella would inherit straight hair. Genetics are not simple and its basically a grab bag of what traits your going to get from the previous 2 generations who influence your physical appearance. I mean in my own family, my dad has black hair, my mother and I have brown and my brother has my grandfather's blonde hair. You cant really guess how these things will turn out.

None of us inherited them but we do now carry the recessive gene for them in us so it's likely that one of us might end up having a green eyed child. If we should have a partner who carries the gene as well and even then it's 50/50. Like you said genetics are complicated. That said My grand mother's sister's grandson is literally a ginger. No clue where he got it from. Both his parents must have carried the gene or maybe it's actually dominant? No clue but I thought of him when I saw Pepa appear for the first time.

Regarding the family dynamic, yes, there are some things common to all families; the favored one; the attractive one, and so on. But here in the northeastern US perhaps the grandparents don't carry as much weight. They are listened to, but my memories of grandparents and older relatives is of them complaining about this and that, not very happy or kid friendly. Abuela doesn't have curly hair either. Oddly, neither does Abuelo Pedro, so I'm more concerned about how the triplets *did* end up with curls! Maybe Abuela just spends the time every day to straighten her hair for some reason...? But then when Agustin married Julieta, she'd have the recessive gene hidden under whichever parent was supposed to be the curly-haired one, so one out of three daughters having straight hair is perfectly normal and expected. Or Isabela, as part of her need to be Señorita Perfecta, is the one who straightens her hair for the Disney Princess Look.

What I loved about this movie is how it points out that families can pressure each other so much without even realizing it. My grandparents were our binding glue. When Grandpa died, the family started to fall apart - and when grandma died 2 years later, it was done. They were the only thing keeping our family a family, sad as that is. I was raised by them b/c my mother didn't want to raise me in the lifestyle she had chosen, but she was always in and out. I had them, my mom, my aunts and uncles....and now, I only have 1 aunt that really talks to me still. She was my youngest aunt, and was always a "black sheep" in the eyes of the rest of the family (but not Grandma...and mostly not Grandpa). The pressure of "belonging" alone can cause so much stress. And each of the cousins, almost everyone can associate themselves with one of them. No - we are not Latino, though my youngest aunt is married to a Chilean right now...they've been trying to get him into the US, but it's tough. However, family structure is a very integral part of the slavic region, where my grandpa's parents were from (to be specific, Poland and Ukraine - some would say those are not, but last I checked they are).

This movie has a thiiiick layer of hints and Easter eggs, and some of them point out that Bruno is an exile even before it is stated that "we do not talk about him". At the beginning, Mirabel points at the family tree on the wall, and Bruno's image is much paler than the rest, indicating that someone (hem-hem) tried to get rid of it; and when the mural of the Madrigal family is shown, all the family members depicted on it have calm or cheerful expressions, except for Bruno, who is clearly anxious (if not scared)

The part about Isabella's hair being (mostly) straight is interesting. In a sense I feel like, Mariano does resemble Pedro to some extent. Likewise Isabella looks like her grandmother when she was young. Meaning Abuela is living vicariously through Isabella. This might not have gone unnoticed by Abuela either. She may have spotted the resemblance. Hence why she's always right behind Isabella and arranging a whole marriage for her. Isabella not wanting this deep down is evidence enough. She was doing it to make OTHERS happy, not herself. We can also imagine that she's learned her attitude towards Mirabel from her grandmother, even saying similar things. "If you werent always trying so hard you wouldn't be in the way" Is pretty much the same as: "I know you want to help but tonight must go perfectly. So the best way for SOME of us to hep is to stand aside." The straight (ish) hair may actually come from Abuela herself.

I for one have enjoyed Encanto and I have viewed this movie many times. The pressure that Abuela Alma has placed on the Grandkids is most apparent on Luisa that her physical strength is being over used by not just the La Familia Madrigal but the village. The person who had his donkeys get out should have been his job to gather his donkeys and Luisa's. Isabella Madrigal is forced to be perfect because of Abuela Alma's desires. Julieta and her children gifts are more practical to La Familia and the community except for Mirabel's who appears not to have a gift. Yet Mirabel has the greatest connection to La Casita of any of La Familia Madrigal. I feel that the door to Mirabel's Room could not be handled by Abuela Alma or a Five Year old Mirabel. The door faded away to protect not only Mirabel but the La Familia Madrigal. When Tió Bruno had his first vision about Mirabel and La Casita he knew that nobody would accept that vision and that forced Bruno into hiding until he was discovered by Mirabel. The hug or reconciliation that Mirabel gave Isabella was just part of the vision and that hug of reconciliation was also needed for Abuela Alma. Abuela Alma never was able to return to the place of her greatest loss the loss of Abuelo Pedro. Mirabel's true gift did not need a door for her gift to prosper. Her gift needed a whole house.
