Ross thanks for the heads up about pruning Smith. The first couple years fruits were amazing… then I pruned. Hardly any fruit and if so quality was terrible. Now I know I won’t make this mistake on my CLBC when it’s time. Thanks!

Great variety video ross! I heard smith isn’t that cold hardy, how does it do in the ground in langhorne? Have you a lot of figs from the in ground tree Smith tree ?

Currently deciding between getting a cutting of CLBC or just getting a 3ga potted on from justfruitsandexotics. Thanks for the overview!

I believe the assessment of sunlight is correct. My 1st year in ground cutting grew 4 feet last year and even though winter came before it ripened any fruit it did set about 30-40. It gets around 12 hours of blistering Louisiana sun. I guarantee I will get fruit off it this year. My Smith is planted right next to it and grew at the same rate and was planted at the same time. I just walked my orchard and it and my BMKK are both starting to break dormancy. I also just grafted CLBC and BM to a Celeste cutting left over from last year that has also just started leafing out. If it takes I think I’m gonna plant it in a local park with no label just to start more controversy. Yeah I’m a sh*t starter. Haha

Wow that's diabolical! 😈 Can I ask your favorite grafting style for figs, oh sower of carica-nfusion?

@@TheRealHonestInquiry Grafting… if the Scion and rootstock are close I use the Z graft, if the Scion is smaller I use the cleft. That’s pretty much it for figs, they are easy compared to say Citrus. It’s all in the timing and a decent technique. Practice this spring on your largest tree. Snip a tip and graft it right back where it came from, then do another. That’s how I started years ago on my massive satsuma tree

You can sauteed or grill them. My favorite way to eat them is pickled.

I put off getting this variety for far too long. I really don’t mind smaller figs.

Don't get me wrong. It's not small, but smaller than Black Madeira on average.
