Colonoscopy Risks and Benefits

A colonoscopy is a procedure that involves an examination of the entire colon and requires bowel preparation and sedation. Screening tests are done to detect or prevent cancer in asymptomatic patients; when concerning signs or symptoms are present, diagnostic testing should be performed. There are a number of stool-based, endoscopic, or radiologic tests available for Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, though choice may be driven by patient preference and local availability. If there is a slight perforation or any other abnormaity, is the dr require by law to approse the patient? Who would know it it was a slight mishap?

You know the test is dangerous if you have to sign a paper beforehand so that the Dr is not held responsible for tearing your colon.

I have diverticulitis and extremely afraid of perforation. It happens more than they tell you .

thanks but im still panicking im scared my innards aren't strong enough of the gas... and I dont what to be awake for a snake goin up my hole, though its probably safer for me...and im getting a combination endoscopy. do they put people to sleep for that? ehhhhhh

I felt no pain whatsoever they gave me an IV ...I am 60 and I was awake for the procedure....7 polyps, I feel very relieved. Waiting for the results and I am really glad I got it done.

Most hospitals knock you out but deep sedation doesn't seem to be popular in Boston. I get conscious sedation which puts me to sleep anyway, but I'd love to count backward from 10 and go right out.

Better to be scared and get it done .....before it could be too late! I got one and I am very relieved, I am 60....It did not hurt and I was awake during the procedure. 7 polyps....waiting for the results. The thought and sound of it really can scare you but the procedure worked out fine.@@alfonsogreen2722

If they cause a perforation leading to sepsis, then the cost is CNN potentially your life. Other than that though, “a colonoscopy is totally safe.” 👩🏼‍⚕️ 💩

Around 5k to 8k. It’s a doctors bread and butter procedure. You pay for their new car and mansion.

Colonoscopy is a painless procedure without any sedation. I just had one and it was an awesome experience seeing my colon on the big screen and chatting with the doctor. Anesthesiologists don't want you to know the truth. It would put them out of business.

I believe there are too many risks involved. If there's no blood in stool, I'd skip this test

I understand your concerns but it's important to keep in mind that you can be asymptomatic even with adenomatous polyps and different types of serious IBDs that can lead to cancer. Stage 2-3 of colorectal cancer can go unnoticed until it reaches late-stage 4 and by then it's often too late. If you're over 45, do not skip having a screening colonoscopy. The risks are extremely low and the benefits far outweigh any potential risks and the chances of facing complications that come from NOT having one are relatively much greater.
