When I watch your restorations, I think of how plain and utilitarian the world has become. The master craftsmanship of old world homes are a gift to us and I'm so grateful you are sharing it with us. They bring art and grace to the world.

Sadly things these days aren’t intended to last. It’s considered a waste of time and money to make buildings look pretty when they’re intended to be torn down again in fifty years.

I totally agree, this is why I’m such a lover of antiques and old architecture, vintage fashion, classic cars etc. The attention to detail and the loving craftsmanship that went to into it….it’s awesome. And it’s why I love this channel. It’s watching someone build their dream who is as enamored with the past as you are yourself. In my case I could never live in an old house, since I use a wheelchair, but I love decorating our home like it was a Victorian house. I take my winnings where I can and keep watching this channel.

Most of my family thinks it weird that I watch a random guy renovating a house, but I find this channel to be very calming and uplifting. You and Kim are so excited and you work so hard for your dream. In a world that has become so selfish, jaded and and always looking for the next new thing your enthusiasm and joy invite others to join your journey to be thankful and appreciative of a world where craftsmen and artisans were valued.

Your phrasing of how our society is, is spot on. Your reasons for following this is the same reasons as to why I watch also. I can see now with who are still alive in my family, their photos are what is seen when looking up "dysfunctional". They make excuses for each other. It is so disheartening.

Your enthusiasm for being the caretaker or custodian of this house and the assorted antiques - not just the owner - is one of the reasons I love watching your channel. It's very reminiscent of Adam Savage and how he views the objects he comes to have in his collection. I love it all.

Please make sure to check out these two home restoration creators today after watching our video. Andrea Eppy is at the beginning stages of restoring her beautiful St Louis foursquare: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/is-HncKnnd2Zk5c.html. Then pop over to Reality Daydream to see his new video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9WAbNucudyagKM.html. His love of Marshaltown, IA is similar to my love of St. Louis. I caught that. A long way from the overwhelming start of the project, that he had to endure. I've known friends who have done restoration. (More like "Im gonna tear this house apart and then figure it out") It is stressful! Always keeping one foot forward can be draining but, once you get far enough ahead, there is room to look back and see the path carved out. When friends have done these big projects they don't just finish a room, be done, close the door and move on til each room is finished. The destruction seems everlasting! Caleb can't do this, Completely finish a room, just yet. But after the wiring and all the guts are complete, it helps to start funneling down to the few rooms that need centered attention and time, while feeling more comfortable in the rest of the home. One day he won't have to sleep, work and relax out of one room and they will start branching out! 🤗

Agreed. My house was built in 1918 so there's a chimney that protrudes much like the 45° here. I painted it both ways and when it had the ceiling color on it, it looked like the ceiling was running down the wall. Just my opinion.

I agree as well. I enter my master bedroom in a small niche area under part of the stairwell. A friend told me to always paint that slant the same as the walls

While I agree in theory and definitely for just painted walls, it’s a bit more complicated with wallpaper and I’m guessing it would be a LOT more complicated when stenciling.

That mineral paint is awesome! You sand it quite some of it and it didn't change on the wall. The bathroom looks stunning with that lovely shade on its walls. I think it's more practical to paint the walls in bathrooms than put their wallpaper which can peel off over time due to humidity, even if it's a half-bath. And the bead board looks so pretty with that final seal coat. It's like it has a super thin layer of varnish. It's really nice to see how it makes shellac's color more deep. I really can't wait to see the walls finished.

It’s funny how we all have our own ideas. I LOVE wallpaper in bathrooms with a pretty print or design to make such a utilitarian room seem more fun! This one will have the best of both worlds after he stencils the “wallpaper” pattern - what you like about paint AND what I like about wallpaper!

When it’s time to do your pattern, you may want to find mineral paint that is sold for furniture painting. You can get a good variety of colors in smaller bottles. You may be able to find them in a local antique mall.

My grandfather was a master craftsman painter and wall paperer . He was amazing to watch and meticulous in his work. I miss him so much. That said he was also unfortunately an alcoholic. Never drank while working but once the job was over,, then he would resort to the way he grew up. At the tender age of 13 he was hauling pails of beer from the tavern to the "house of ill repute" his Aunt ran in Joplin Missouri. . The journey traveled by some of the older people that came before us was often not an easy one. Rest in peace Art.

I'm not sure how historically slanted walls were treated, as far as whether they were considered wall or ceiling, but in my 1910 Victorian, I've treated slanted walls as walls and painted them the same as the wall colors. I find it makes the space seem larger if you keep the true ceiling as only what is horizontal.

@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack my house is odd in that, it's in the victorian style despite being built in 1910. The man who built it was an Italian immigrant who built houses for a living. It is a massive work of art, with a purpose. You're basically an art restorer at this point. After you're done, it won't ever (barring any catastrophes) become abandoned again. It's crossed the hump where it was an old house, and now it's an art piece - forever.

I’ve been told that I’m an “old soul” because of my love of old homes and antiques. Your beautiful home has a great caretaker and I’m sure the Browns would be very proud of you. Someday I hope to have a house with a “grand staircase” that I can love and take care of. Until then, watching your adventure will have to do! ❤️

Love the color. It's practically the color I have in my bedroom and bath. It's like waking up to Sunshine everyday!

Kaleb, your love for your "home" is coming through loud and clear, and what a wonderful home it will be when you and Kim are finished. It's such a grand house and it's a lucky home to have you getting her ready to shine again. At first I didn't like the color you were paining the powder room, but when it dried it was toned a lot, and more like an ivory/cream, it turned out beautiful. Thanks again.

We used Waterlox on our butcher block counters in the kitchen and it is fabulous stuff. We wipe it down with water and everything.

You may be lucky to have such a beautiful house, but it's just as lucky to have you. I can't help but feel that as you rush about fixing and mending, the house breathes a little sigh of relief. Houses are just bricks and mortar, homes have hearts and souls of their own. I think the old lady is finally beginning to feel alive again. Thanks as always for sharing!

I love the finish you're using on the bead board. That was what I most wanted to see when trying to pick the paint color. You chose well.

I shared your channel with my Dad because we both love Victorian homes. And I am enthralled by your restoration. So many of these century homes are derelict because no one wants to invest the time and money in rehabilitation. Second empire and Italianate are always my two favourites. This house is going to be so beautiful when it’s done. Warm and cozy. There’s something to be said about how houses were built 100+ years ago. They don’t make them like this anymore. And I can tell it’s a real labour of love for you.

I first learned about the Titanic in the 3rd grade, and kinda became very interested in it as a kid. I think that started my love of history. Idk if I have it in me to take on a restoration like you're doing here, but i love that you're sharing it with us.

WOW what a difference! The color is so warm and soft; it's going to look amazing with the light from the sconces. I love the full circle moment you had with your own grand staircase- it hit me right in the feels!

Crazy to think that it really wasn't that long ago that you didn't have electricity or heat in the house. Now you are able to stay there for several days, in the winter no less! Congrats Kaleb! It's great to see the house coming together and your enthusiasm for it.
