Your video gave me the courage to do my first project. Not near as professional as your furniture, but I took an old entertainment piece and turned it in to a pantry for my small kitchen. I used General Finishes Halcyon Blue as a base and washed it with Coastal Blue and then Flat out Flat top coat. Really happy with the results...all because of you!!

I did it! painted some old oak nightstands with the color washing technique! The milk paint is very THICK and the grainy oak seemed to soak it up. I rolled the Patina Green on with a foam roller then I smoothed it with a brush. It left some brush marks, but that worked out well for the next step when I applied the watered down coastal blue! I was working outdoors 64 degrees...I had to work fast as the 'wash' tended to dry quickly. I only did one coat of wash...but I could see that I hadn't watered it down as much as I should have, maybe. I liked it regardless! The hardware was already 'antique'. the pieces were old to begin with, and when I put them back on, the tables just lit up! What fun! I could get hooked on this...Thank you for the wonderful inspiring videos!

I have been using this technique for about 40 years. I NEVER use anything else to antique furniture. It's so easy and the cleanup is easy as well. I feel I have more control and it dries quickly, but it's also forgiving. Just a little water and you can take some of it off. I then apply polyacrylic over the top especially when I have folk painted on the piece.

@RootsWingsHome
@RootsWingsHome 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! You sure can do it with the clear coat! Don't wait long, you'll have a longer working time with the clear coat on there, but I would just work in sections, apply the paint and then wipe it right off to the desired look!

I just painted my nightstand in vintage mustard yellow and had it distressed. Looks fabulous!!! But my question here is, what layering washing color would be best to apply on yellow? Do I use clear wax before layer or do I wait to finish layering? Thank you in advanced. Your tutorial is amazing!
@RootsWingsHome

I would use some water based sealer (polyacrylic) between layers. What about a teal or brick red (for a real dramatic look) or perhaps an orange or lighter yellow for a more subtle watercolor type finish!

Thank you! This is General Finishes Milk Paint - it has a bit of shine, I'd say a satin finish. GF is my favorite paint for furniture. Another one that is good is Dixie Belle - it's a chalk paint with excellent coverage, but you do need to seal it.

I'm wondering if this color wash technique will work on a headboard that I've already chalk painted? It is painted a turquoise/teal blue. So right before you talked about color washing over chalk paint I saw that you said it should have some kind of finish over it before doing the wash. What type of finish would you recommend for the chalk paint? Thank you!
@RootsWingsHome
@RootsWingsHome 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you sure can. If you already have used chalk paint, just seal it with a clear water based sealer (my favorite is General Finishes High Performance Topcoat) once that is dry, you can proceed with your layering just like in the video!

@@RootsWingsHome the more I thought about it the more I realize that that would be easier than wiping I was thinking about being able to get the color exactly where you wanted it. I am doing two things for my cousins that are flat Shamrocks with their last names cut out in the middle and I'm having such a hard time getting any depth in the paint because it's just flat Pine with no texture. So that's what I was thinking when I was watching that and asking that. I have painted it with milk paint, the kind that comes powdered and you add water. None of it was chippy it was on there like glue LOL and if I send it I get that very new looking white pine showing through. I want so badly for it to be so pretty for them and I've been hunting for any kind of a technique to give me some depth. I don't know what color I would even use to go over this dark barn red. I am afraid a Farmhouse Red chalk paint that I have would just be too red. It would be worth a shot. I have however, since I watch this video, taking my wire brush on my drill and beat them up pretty well! I took a paint scraper and banged it a few times and with the corner and even took my hammer and hammered the claw end into him several times just to give a little texture to the wood I'm still going to try your Technique next. Thank you so much. I have been looking at General Finishes on Amazon for a week and hadn't pulled the trigger because I just didn't know, different sellers have different prices in different shipping prices. I need to try to find somewhere that sells it in a brick-and-mortar store. Thanks for a great tutorial!
