It’s first come dry camping with 50 amp (sometimes not) - get your Fishing License (instead of campground fee) - San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area 15 miles west of Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center. Get it online or at the Mosca Pitstop. www.moscapitstop.com/

First-come, first-served. No potable water; bring in all your own water. We got ours at the Maverick Gas Station in Alamosa. @maverikadventure
"Electric hookups available. Dump station and dumpsters. Requires a $43 Colorado wildlife annual access pass, or hunting or fishing license- cannot be purchased on-site. Must be purchased in advance. No trees in campground. Lake is absent in dry years. Wetland area north of the large lake is closed to the public for nesting season February 15-July 15. Call 719-378-2020 in summer."

You experienced so much of what Nature has to offer: beautiful sunshine, lightning storms, clsar blue skies, cool days, sweltering heat, and let's not forget howling winds. Walking around in flying sandpaper must have been bruising. Lots of moisturizing post sand surfing in the Great Dunes National "Sandpaper" Park. Thanks as always, Larry, Alice, and SCP. It was a joy seeing SCP out in the water and on the dunes. She was so fast and strong, pulling you both. Lots of people yet it was not overcrowded. Looked like you all had lots of fun.😁

We stayed at the same campground last year, very near, or the same site you have. We were there June 12 to 16th of 2023. We did not get any toys on the sand but did hike up a few dunes and watch others try to surf down on boards and cardboard. Seemed like the cardboard did better. I also want to thank Larry for the advice on the Thetford Aqua Magic base. After replacing the water valve and it getting a worse leak. I broke down and replaced the whole base. Much easier and it actually fixed our issues. Thanks again for making those maintenance videos.

@@Life.After.Retirement Allen, we didn’t see any cardboard 😆 but I kept picturing Christmas Vacation. I do wish I had the energy to climb to a higher dune - bet the view was amazing. Funny about the campground and site a year apart. Wow. Glad we could help with the toilet. I’ll tell Larry Alice

Welcome to our back yard. We live on the west side of the San Luis Valley near Monte Vusta. The Sand Dunes pool would have been a great place to vist the next time you are in the area

Time of year makes a big difference on the sand. Early in the year the sand has a crust that makes climbing easier. When we were there the sand was soft and your feet would sink making climbing harder. We rented a sit down board, it was very fast and if you came off the board you didn't fall hard. My wife thought her sandals would be good to wear to hike up after all you can wear them to the beach, but the sand was so hot I gave her my socks to wear. We stayed at Oasis and it was fine.

We haven't made it to this area yet, but we will eventually. Think we'll leave the sandboarding to Larry, though. I'm thinking a sled would be better for us. We did get the free potable water at the Maverick in Moab a couple of years ago. No where near as convenient as the one you used. Faucet was on the building and just in general harder to get to. Not complaining, as we always like free. Looking forward to your next adventure.

I’ve skied for years and also taught, sand surfing, this definitely looks interesting although I’d be curious about trying it with skis. Was it actually fast moving? Or slower as it was sand vs snow?
