As someone who lives in Brazil, imagine that everything that you guys find expensive (US and EU), it's 3 times more over here. It's tough being an artist here! I saved the whole year to get my Lyra's and my Prisma Premier. I'm lucky to have 72 sets of both, that's a real luxury. I also spent the whole year researching which supplies work best for me, it was a true chore. The same book you are using cost me 100 reais, and that's a lot more than the 14,90 dollar/reais exchange rate. My mom is getting me my first Hanna Karlzon book for Christmas, also on that same price. Again, I cannot state how privileged I am, to be able to have those things, even though is not even close to what most people have. And I still use the same Faber Castell, Tris Megasoft and Maped colored pencils I used when I started. I'm better at using them, after 2 years of coloring solely with them. Even so, they can't even be considered "budget friendly", they still cost quite a lot (not as much as artist grade, but paying 88 reais on colored pencils is not cheap in a country who is going through recession. Sometimes I feel bad for spending/having that money). So the real thing is - screw expensive stuff. You can achieve SO MUCH without it, getting the artist grade is not a necessity, but an option and a total luxury. I've done beautiful things with simple pencils, sometimes I prefer them to the really expensive ones. Never let that stop you, ever!

Thank you SO MUCH Betina for explaining what it's like in other parts of the world. So often we think that the rest of the world has the same luxuries we do, all because we have access to so much "cheap stuff" here. I don't feel bad for spending my money on things, or even for having the money to buy the things I have, because I work really hard to have that money. You should never feel bad because you can afford to buy something. Treat yourself if you can, and use what you have when you can't. That should be everyone's mantra. :D

I color for help with my anxiety. Yes, I would like to have nice pencils but just because I can’t get nice pencils doesn’t take away from the reason.i color. This isn’t high school folks. I do the best I can with what I have. Joining groups is inspiration for me not a competition. If we take this too serious, the fun gets sucked out of coloring and there is no motivation to continue.

Daisy Kelly - I totally agree. I wish an artist would do a KZfaq channel on nothing but Crayola with an emphasis on the classic yellow box pencils. Jenna Turin has some videos up that are a great starting point using the Crayola classic 50 set. I purchased the Crayola 💯 set of absolutely beautiful colors. After using Jenna’s technique for awhile I began holding the pencil tip at a 45 degree angle and with medium to light pressure color in an area or object, then change the direction of my coloring strokes and going over the area again. I may do this several times to build up the coverage and intensity of the color. the results are absolutely beautiful. Using this method achieves great blending results as well with Crayola. Since I color for the enjoyment and relaxation, I am not in a rush any way. Also, the classic broad tip markers by Crayola are vibrant and long lasting. I get them on clearance sales after the return to school rush. They come in sets of 40 or so colors now, not just the basic 12 colors.

I found great set of 8 glitter gel pens for $2 at Big lots 4 years ago and they still have ink in them! Also, I Just bought from Dollar Tree a set of 2 gold and silver gel pens that work great, lots of ink! Just have to look and sometimes we will get lucky ❤😊🎨

I love your demos! You are my favorite KZfaq colorist and tutorial giver, # 1! That said, I do have a little disagreement with one thing you mentioned. I did buy like 10 of those cheap-o coloring books at my local dollar Tree and you're correct, in that they are printed on horrid paper, sometimes with ink issues, sometimes badly drawn designs. But what I did was bring 'em home go through each looking for flaws, take them apart (easy they're staple bound ) take the illustrations I liked that were well-drawn and copy them in my printer onto either card stock or multi-media paper and then I had a great collection of really fun coloring sheets on good paper. I didn't do this so much to save$$, I did it to increase my coloring choices and some of the illustrations were really nice and very cool! Some are my most favorite things I've ever colored. That was in the earliest days of my foray into coloring as a hobby. I also found inexpensive gel pens there that compare favorably to most "better" gel pen sets in quality even though they only come in packs of 6 or 12. I would NEVER buy any other art supplies in a dollar store, however. Now when I visit the Dollar Tree stores in my city, they have almost no "adult" coloring books anymore, and that's kind of a shame, I think. They used to carry the Kappa publication coloring books. Maybe some stores still do, but not in my city. Oh well, I've moved on from those days.

That's a really good idea if you have a scanner/printer that's good quality! Mine wouldn't do it... they turned out smudgy and strange because of the ink. :) Thank you for your reply!

I don't want to buy a book and then have to print the pictures to colour them. That's why I buy the book and not PDFs etc. I also no longer have a printer because I kept having trouble with it and it took up so much room in my small house ad just made my whole computer area look ugly. Personally, I'd be doubtful about it actually saving money. You can get a book from Creative Haven for 5 so even if it did save money, I wouldn't want to take that time and put up with a space stealing printer again. Plus, unless you have a super high quality one (meaning expensive), printed stuff always looks like shit compared to a good colouring book. I would print colouring sheets at work, with a decent printer, and most of the time, they just didn't look as good as a colouring book.

I love the art supplies I get from the Dollar Tree, they're not the best, but with the right patience and skill you can get just as good of a result. They have a sturdy mechanical pencil with colored leads and a built-in sharpener, which to me was genius. Why has no coloring pencil manufacturer thought of doing this and just selling us their leads for future replacements? It would drop the cost of pencils SO much.

The next month I wanted gold.. real metallic gold. I needed a marker. to achieve the look I wanted so I bought a set of metallic sharpies liked that so i bought a set of crayola markers and a set of gel pens... and when I could I added a new book to my collection. now I have markers and gels and pencils no artist grade anything I do it for me don't really care... I enjoy doing it some of the pictures turn out awesome some not so much... I am slowly learning to add things in the back ground sometimes it works sometimes not so much.

Trudy Anderson - Jenna Turin has some great videos up as a starting point. I like using a 45 degree angle method with a light touch with the classic Crayola 100 set . I can build up multiple layers and get an excellent blend without destroying the tooth of the paper. Crayola classic broad stroke markers have vibrant colors and are great for the coloring and faux calligraphy. The colors are vibrant, the markers are well saturated and lasting. I found varying my techniques and being patient allow for spectacular results without having to spend a lot of $$$.

I use a lot of different pencils for colouring and my art. I use Crayola, Prismacolour Scholar (cheap ones that work realllly well), Prismacolor Premiere, Staedtler coloured Pencil (Have not used those or the Prisma Premiere yet) Crazy Art and just a bunch of different kinds. I love trying new ones. Point is though. Art supplies do not have to be expensive. I use school supplies on sale. I have watercolour in tubes, and big tubes of acrylic paints and water colour paints in the cheap pans that work great! I buy my brushes at the DOllorama. Yes I agree it is hit and miss there! I buy supplies I know will work well. They have bags with mix brushes. I buy canvases, colouring books etc.. at the Dollorama and Dollar Tree. Art is fun so explore with any brand. It need not be expensive so long as it works for you!

I won't buy anything at Dollar Tree or $0.99 Stores much anymore. I have some metallic permanent markers I found there that I like, but I've literally thrown all the rest away. The little sponge brushes you can get there are wonderful, but the paint brushes I've found are awful. The bristles flay and fall out... doesn't make for pretty painting. My stores like that don't sell canvases or coloring books worth buying, either. Just the ones on the equivalent of newsprint. I do use lots of stuff when I color, though! Some artist-quality... some not!
@moriganna67ify6 жыл бұрын
Simple Art for Adults. Erin, Oh that is unfortunate. I honestly buy most my art supplies at Walmart and what I can't get I get at Michaels. I buy beginner stuff at our Dollorama, like I bought a big package of brushes to start me off (YES! Some are horrible) However I do buy canvases there and have found Bienfang artist paper for sketching. I found tracing paper and some pretty nifty acrylic tube paint. I don't buy much for my art there. Even my sketching journals I got at Walmart during the back to school sale. I bought a AWESOME x-acto old school style crank metal sharpener, for my good artist pencils. It is not set up though so I am not using this yet until my craft area is set up. I found water colour paints, acrylic paint and some really nice sketch books. I will buy pens and pencils at the Dollar stores. I did find a pack of 10 Staedtler HB#2 at our local DOllorama. I had to take them home. LOL I have a Hilroy Artist Kit with graphites, charcoal pencils and graphite and charcoal sticks, sharpener, kneadable eraser, tortilon and sand paper block. I had to learn how to use most of it. Hahaha! I use Staedtler graphite's and retractable pencils. LOL

If you want something cheap and good, consider Hardmuth's Woodless Progresso pencils, they are very reasonably priced atm and very colour saturated. Guang Hui do a fabulous set of 160 pencils, cheaper than Polychromos but almost as good. Then you can get STA Aquarelle dual tip (brush and fineliner) pens quite cheaply too. They are made by various companies, but always have STA Aquarelle written on the barrels.

I totally agree with you about not purchasing the Dollar Tree coloring books,,, Except for 1!!! I actually found J. Basford's "Lost Ocean" at the local Dollar General in MS for $3! I will say that the paper is more of a bright white compared to the same book that I had already purchased at WalMart, but, it is still a good medium weight, will accept layering, and even lighter watercolors without bleeding through. Just wanted to share this with everyone. Thanks for the wonderful color-alongs and tutorials.

Your advice is spot on! This has been my experience over 2 years of coloring. I'm not one of those on a budget but I did work my way up from the inexpensive pencils i.e Marco Raffines (I'm sure we've all used/considered that set at one point!) But I quickly outgrew them and went up to Prismas, Polys, Albrecht Durers and my 2 Derwent sets (Inktense and Artist). I gave my first set to my mom who's been enjoying them immensely and recently bought her own Prismas! As regards buying on Amazon, I know most people think it's the cheapest but keep in mind it's not always. Sure when something's on sale (esp Black Friday/Christmas etc) it's the best price but other times? I've found many art supplies at my local Blick's at a lower price than Amazon. As a bonus, the staff there are very helpful and mostly artists themselves and will help you buy stuff you'll use/like. I've been stopped from making mistakes several times there! With books and art supplies, I've found quality trumps quantity every time!!! I cannot stress this enough - quality makes a huge difference to the coloring experience esp paper. You'll have more fun with fewer high quality pencils than the other way round even if it seems counter intuitive at first. Best of all though, there are NO RULES in coloring. You do whatever feels right for you!
@SimpleArtforAdults6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's all different based on where you live, the time of year, the product you want, etc. It always, always pays to research and try the products out before you make a big investment. :) There are no rules.. you're right! Do what you like with what you like! I know a few who watercolor in their books exclusively and don't even touch pencils for the most part, so it's all about how you get your enjoyment.

Hi Erin-came back and re-watched this after how long, lol? Now that I've been coloring for about 2-1/2 years, I have to agree with you. I think I've mentioned this before...but...I started out with that 50 pack of Crayola and a coloring book by Kappa, both of which I picked up at Walmart and my total came to like $13-14. My favorite pencils now are by far the Prisma Premiers, followed very closely by the Schperrir Farbens. That being said...I still to this day use my Crayola pencils A LOT!!! In fact, I like them enough that I went ahead and got the 100 pack as well. AND...to this day one of my all time favorite color blends actually is with the Crayola pencils.

I agree! My first adult coloring supp!y was the color it gel pens. Maybe expensive to some of us, I actually thought I could use them to write letters and write in my journal and diary. Once I got them I could not believe how nice they were and it came with a couple Mandela to color. "BOOM"! I FELL in love and off to the races I went less than a month ago. I did do something impulsively and that was I bought a set of 36 colored pencils without researching it and the pencils are supposed to be artist quality but I bet the differ in that one! Some of the pencils were broken and just kept breaking and kept breaking when I tried sharpening them and I emailed the company and I get to get a response. They are the LOKSS Pencils they came with a canvas pouch, an eraser, and cheap sharpener at first it worked well. That is a regret I paid 15.00 for them. Wish I had seen your videos b4 doing that I probably would of gotten the prisma color which I very much probably will in a couple weeks. I'm also thinking of getting water colored pens

I have maybe 3 cheap (but highly reviewed) quality coloring books from Amazon that I bought used. Some of my work-arounds are that I look for free coloring downloads or I download free samples of a coloring book on Kindle. I print those out on watercolor paper, sketchbook paper, or marker paper depending on the medium I want to use. I get my sketch paper from Five Below, it's like 100 sheets for $5. Sometimes I'll glue layers of paper together until I have something close to 250 gsm cardstock. I own 2 coloring books from the Dollar Tree, bc I want to practice understanding highlighting/shading, color combinations, white-lining, accenting with brush pens & gel pens. My 51 Caliart dual brush/chisel markers & 32 gel pens came in a bundle for $38 (that's 45 cents each) during holiday deals. I started off with a meager set of 20 Prismacolors for $8, then graduated to a 72 set of Anna Valacci Watercolor pencils for $15, and during Black Fri of this year I bought a 120 set of Brutfuner for $27. I'll also borrow art books from the library and trace images that I like unto drawing paper and color over my sketch. I don't sell any of it bc of copyright laws, but I use this method to practice & try to understand why the artist used the colors they did.

Just love listening to you I have been coloring since 2014 but due to health problem have only been able to color about a year. I started coloring following a botched neck surgery. I was going stircrazy being stuck inside for a year. Being on disability didn't leave me much to buy stuff with. I got my stuff from the dollar tree but wasted half of the book's because it bled through. I finally got prismacolor pencils from a family friend and just got 50 markers it took me 2 years to save up for them they are dual markers by Color It I dreamed of being able to color with markers. I have gel pens so I am so excited after almost 4 years able to color with all of them. I bought 5 book's that have really thick paper it took a long time as 2018 start's My goal is to color a picture a day. I am not good like you are but it help's me forget about my pain for a bit. Thanks for doing this. I have asked a few KZfaq channels to do the same thing and prove art is for everyone. In the UK Bic Pen art is growing because you can go and buy a big bag of pens and create some staggeringly good art. I disagree with not buying small sets when you are at the point you want a reasonable pencil for a reasonable price. Either buy open stock or small sets to find what you like. I also think that you really don't need more than a 72 set of any brand, with the exception of Black Widow. Those who continue to buy art supplies and do a review comparing brand names to amazon basics coloured pencils, great pencil to start off with, are elitist. They either can't stop themselves from buying and/or don't realise how ridiculous their comments are.

I just wanna point out that outside the US, Prismacolor is nowhere near "budget friendly". I'm in Europe and those are pencils I will never have. I could have bought the 150 set for €90 (a lucky find, however)...but with no chance of buying open stock replacements and with the possibility of shipping damaging them and months of sending back and forth and the threat of having to get them at customs (I don't drive and the customs office isn't in a good area for public transport. It's in the middle of nowhere). Plus they could have been fakes, which I wouldn't have known because you cannot buy Prismacolor in person here. Some Europeans love them so much that they consider it worth the trouble, but I didn't want to do that to myself just to have Prismacolor when there are so many other pencils, artist and budget. I love trying out budget pencils and I found some that are really lovely.

Those are the ones I buy and have never had an issue nor spent a fortune either. And you can buy some pretty nice artists pencils in WHSmith for about £6 which are good to start with. Etc) thank you for these great tips....and beautiful picture....live off disability so very limited budget for "extras" of any kind🥺🥺

I think it was a really great video, you made some excellent points. I agree with on all of it, it’s so easy to get trapped by those sales and dollar tree. I am guilty of that as well so I think this video can help a lot. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

hi Erin, I have been looking for something beside paper,. i saw what you used on this video. It looked like it would keep your page firm to colour, paper doe not do that. Just reading what i wrote I'm talking about what you put behind your page to protect the page your colouring. Good advise for beginners it's what i did and do.

Hi fellow Hoosier!! I'm from Indy! I found a budget art company from Indiana! Royal and Langnickel is headquartered in Indiana. I have their colored and watercolor pencils. Check them out. I'm a sub. For this video I would have colored the birdhouse pic with a cheap brand such as Crayolas or Crazart. Just to show how well they work. Instead of using your prismacolor pencils. They're not budget friendly.

I agree with Erin here. You get what you pay for regarding art supplies. The dollar store brand of color pencils is what it is, cheaply made, cheaply produced, and gives you little to no satisfaction when coloring, or at least that's my honest opinion/experience. I also agree with her in that if you have a limited budget, which most of us do, I'd try and get more bang for your buck in the long run with a slightly better quality brand (like Crayola) than the cheapest colored pencils money can buy. That way, you can still get some quality from your pencils, but you won't be spending a small fortune for them. Should you not enjoy coloring or using colored pencils, you won't be out a lot of money either and you can give your set to a child, or friend, with confidence that they might find enjoyment out of them as they aren't dirt cheap. I also love looking for sales, great deals, and clearance items to save a penny here or there. You don't need to buy top of the line supplies to enjoy coloring, or even pay top dollar for them. Sometimes the most expensive won't equal the best, or the best for you. Just remember that coloring isn't for professional artists, it's for anyone and everyone who can find some sort of enjoyment out of it. Also, a tip if you are dying for the more high end brands and find them out of your budget. Maybe buy the whole range of pencils from whichever brand you're eyeing a few open stock pencils at a time. Also frequent Ebay, you might find a good deal there. You never know!

some of the dollar trees are getting some good coloring books if you hit just right. Surprised the heck out of me. I can't afford the $30.00 books. But a $17.00 book for $1.00, that I can swing. the dollar tree also has some not so great books. I picked 1 up just to practice on and to play with. On Amazon right now is a set of SchpirerrFarber 72 count oil based set that are $26.64 . The reviews on you tube have been very positive. I add that as an addition to the scorpion and black widow wax based colored pencils you like. I put them on my wish list. and as you often say each person needs to decide for themselves.

I keep checking them but I haven't seen any good books at Dollar Tree. I'm also going to get a set of the oil pencils as soon as I can - likely right after the holidays. Thank you!

Just personal but I think manufacturers plan the color game - I have a set of 72 of color pencils , which I paid waaay to much for a Michaels, and there are some that I swear are the same. This brand does not have colors or numbers on their pencils. I wish I had saved my money for a smaller set of nicer pencils. I was just dazzled by the "all the colors".

Thank you so much for this very informative video. I was considering purchasing gel pens and at some point I think I will but I really love to shade and don't feel like they will be the best choice for me right now. If you had $20 to spare and wanted a lot of different color options, what would you choose? Thanks again...

In terms of gel pens or are you looking for something else? Pencils, maybe? I can try my best to help.

Thank you for the quick response. I think I'm going to go with pencils for now. When I was younger I used to use the crayola pencils on their sides and then used my finger to rub/blend and then erase anything outside of the lines. So I'm thinking pencils would be better at the beginning for me since I've already used them on and off over the years.

justmeinflorida You can get a set of 72 prisma colors on Amazon for $24. And if you watch the lightning deals and warehouse deals sometimes cheaper than that. I got a set of 132 prisma colors for $39 that way.

72 Prismas for $24??? Seriously? Until now, I never understood why someone would buy these, but that cheap price explains a lot to me. One problem is, that most of the videos (over 90%?) about adult coloring are from the US and around and many of them use or recommend Prismas very often. I know that for a long time Prismas where the only quality pencils out in the US. Polys, Lumis, Lyra etc are known in the meantime but still aren't around anywhere in the US. I live in germany and you get Prismas here since a few years, but just in sets, no single ones (and only from the internet). Ok I've to say these just aren't my fav. type of pencils but they have or had the quality issues for a very long time, aren't lightfast in any way (there where lightfast ones years ago but got sortet out), they smear and crumle, build up a waxbloom very fast if you are a beginner and therefore aren't worth the money, compared to other pencils you can buy here. To be honest, they are even one of the most inferior, based only on the facts and price, completely without my personal preference. Also things like Gamsol don't exist in Germany and the use of things like that is even for artists here very uncommon, also the results are not seen as a quality painting at all. We have a very different way to layer and colour to achieve these results. You experience it if you take Polys or Lyras and try to use them like Prismas, it will end up as a disaster (that's why some people review them so bad or are dissapointed about them, they are used to Prismas and don't know how to use other, especially oilbased ones) Also blender pencils don't really exist here, Lyra is the only company that offers one, so also not as common, but much more than mineral spirits. But usually we still don't use these, because of the different way/style of colouring, there is no need. We have access to nearly all artist quality pencils and most in the middle range, but Prismas are the ones that are hard to find. Only people that do looooove this very smooth wax sooooo much, will buy them. But because of the videos etc beginners often want them and spend a big amount of money (up to $250-300 for 150 Prismas) and end up really dissapointed. Sometimes, out of nowhere Amazon has a price for $100 or less for this set for a few days. But you need to stalk them maybe for month and then be very fast to buy. If you buy Prismas online in Germany, certainly you can't have a look at them before and will still very likely end up with a "bad" set with quality issues. You can return them of course, but you know then that there is no big chance to get a "good" set by simply exchange them. You would end up with the same bad quality. The bad ones are still very present here, because the Prismas aren't as common. Maybe in the next year the better ones finally will come through here too. I know that some people who love Prismas import them from Amazon US, because of the price (but I never looked it up). But if you do so as a private person and the import comes simply through mail, you can imagine that even with a set of the now good ones there is a high rist that they don't arrive still "alive" and you still end up with non usable ones. You can return them of course, but it's not the easiest thing to do and you will need to pay the shipping costs, because of the export. So you paid import and export and end up with nothing. So you could have spend the same amount of money, buying the set of 24 for $25 and end up with bad quality ones, but at least you have some, instead of the import/export option. BUT if I only had to spend $24 for 72 Prismas? I would use them too, at least for some things or additional to my other pencils, because quality and price seems balanced. I also won't mind the quality issues in this case. For compaison: You pay here in Germany 20€ ($25) for the set of 24 Prismas or you spend 26€ for a set of 24 Polychromos. Simple decision, isn't it? Of course we have also others like Lyra etc, that are not as expensive as the Polys, so you can still spend less money for very good quality pencils and if you are on a very tight budget, or simply don't want or don't need such high quality, you will find some good priced ones in the middle range. For me, Prismas aren't artis quality pencils in any way, they are not even lightfast. They are a good pencil for school kids or for a bit of colouring fun at home. If they where priced like this, I'm sure they would be more common here. Also a very commong thing you hear in video from US, just use a coupon on these etc.... nope, things like that don't exist in Germany. You can buy it for the price that is shown or not. Sometimes things can be on sale here, maybe for a week or a day and are more affordable then, but the amount in stock is always limited and you have to be fast enough to buy it. But that is maybe one or two times per year per item.

Good info. Never knew amazon had lightening deals or ware house deals. I very recently bought a set of prismacolor colors from Walmart and the company that shipped them just packed them in a simple bubble wrap mailer. Needless to say when received, the tin was crushed and I'm sure the pencils are damaged. The company said to mail it back and if it had been opened (which I did not unsealed it), they wouldn't charge me a restocking fee. They won't pay return shipping. This experience has left a sour taste with me on online ordering. I'm afraid when I mail it back they will say it was opened just to charge me the additional fee. What is your advice. Should I keep it and use the ones that are possibly not damaged or mail it back. I'm sure from the condition of the pkg that the leads may be broken on all of them.
@SimpleArtforAdults6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kris! I'm sorry you had this experience. Are the pencils visibly damaged? If not, then you might try the "heat trick". Some folks will turn their ovens on to warm, put the pencils on baking trays, then turn the oven off, let it cool to about 100 degrees, and pop the pencils in for a couple hours while the oven cools. After the pencils cool completely, the cores are fused back together and the pencils are as good as new. If you don't feel comfortable doing that (and I would totally understand), then you could try to put them on a heating pad for about 5-10 minutes each side as you have problems with them. Personally, I put my WHOLE set in the trunk of my car this summer for about an hour, then brought them back inside the house and let them cool down. I've had minimal breakage with mine, and our UPS guys are notorious for being rough with our packages. I really hope this helps! The fact that they won't pay return shipping really stinks. I ordered from Walmart.com once, and I had a bad experience too. Amazon is usually better about helping you when you receive a damaged or defective product, in my opinion.
