Coloring with Fineliners

I demonstrate how I use fineliners to colour with the “dot method” mimicking pointillism. Unfortunately I had some technical issues and part of my progress has been lost towards the end where I used a waterbrush to blend the wings and background. I have previously shown in other marker videos how I do that, and they can be found in my playlist titled How I Use My Art Supplies.

Ahh yes, the lovely Colour Bright Bex showed this method many years ago. Thanks for resurfacing it!

It’s certainly not a new concept and has been used in the art world for a long time, there are some artists who still create amazing original art (I was fortunate to sell a drawing in an exhibition that I created this way many years ago) and it can be adapted to fineliners, markers, alcohol markers etc. I don’t think many use it as a method for colouring because it is so slow, but I find it is effective for double sided pages where bleed through might be a problem, and really good for those times when I need to slow down my thoughts and relax 👍 Once my fineliners are dried out I don’t think I will be replacing them though, I am enjoying marker work more often these days.

This is kind of how I paint in acrylic, when I was doing full works of art. A modified impressionist style. I would mix my base colors first and save them in little pots (you can buy these at art supplies or Amazon), base the entire piece in broad strokes (kind of looks like a typical paint by number at this point), then basically repaint the entire work with a 10/0 brush, mixing adjacent colors on my brush and applying them in dots and dashes. Yes, it takes forever, but it was my happy place. I find the most comfort in having both sides of my brain working at the same time so I would paint and either listen to music or an audiobook simultaneously.. I could spend hours and not even realize how long, I would set a timer to remind me to get up from my easel and take a break. I would average a month on a smaller 16x20 work and 3 months on a larger 24x36 work. I'd buy my little brushes several at a time because I'd wear the tips off. Up close it's all splotches of color, at the typical viewing distance of 3-4 feet its a detailed dimensional image. Acrylic has the advantage of being able to go light over dark.. I assume you could do something similar with acrylic pens, especially the smaller ones. Can't really blend the colors together out of a pen like I would with a brush though. I just don't have time now that I had to go back to work full time though.. I've done one that was on the smaller side and it took me five months to finish lol. Thus my turning to coloring as an alternative. I do very much miss the satisfaction of seeing the end result hanging on my wall.

Sometimes it’s the process over results….while the goal is to have a painting/coloured page at the end of it etc it’s often the feelings evoked while working on them that mean the most. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

It really is relaxing when you are in the mood to slow down, and one of the best ways to use fineliners in my opinion. Colour seems so pure and vibrant when the fineliners are used this way, the blending can be so gradual if you take your time and do it slowly. Have fun experimenting! Thanks for watching, Jackie

It’s a very old art technique, I think we don’t see it much in the colouring community because it is rather slow, but it has it’s “time and place” 😊

It sure is slow! I think it’s useful for times when you feel like doing it but I couldn’t make it a regular thing, and I like my markers too much now to use fineliners too often 😁
