I chat about my background, how I came to the adult colouring hobby and why I continue to colour, while colouring/painting a page using Derwent Inktense pencils and Faber Castell Albrect Durer watercolour pencils. Finished page will be posted on Instagram and shown in May Completed Pages video. It’s a long one, thanks for watching! Jackie
The hashtag I coloured this for is #pinkmermaymania created by Sam ‪@samwayscoloring‬ on Instagram.

Hi Jackie, I thoroughly enjoyed watching how you use Inktense and listening to your comments about life. I also lead a "dull" life, being single, retired and - other than a few volunteer obligations and trips to the gym - colouring most of the day. My philosophy is that I worked hard in extremely fast-paced and stressful professions so now I've earned the peace and quiet. Today I'm going to try the technique you demonstrated in this video so thank you for sharing. Cheers!

Thanks Sharon, your comment is very much appreciated ❤️ I hope you enjoy experimenting with your supplies. It might take some getting used to working in this manner, but if you persist I know you will find a way that feels right for you 😉 I find it so relaxing to slow down and build the colour up, and in a strange way slowing down actually means faster results somehow?! 😊

I absolutely loved listening to you , I think a lot of us can totally relate , I’m also a homebody and the days that I get to be at home alone pottering and working in my colouring books and playing with my art stuff are my favourite days . Being peaceful at home for me is fulfilling ❤ . I loved the painterly look you achieve with your inktense , just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing x

I think a lot of the philosophy you’ve mentioned resonates My main hobbies are textile crafts , and I’ve sometimes pressurised myself a lot in that so I was losing my mojo. I pick up colouring to let myself just enjoy colours, simultaneously it releases the creative blocks in my other crafts so I’ve benefited that way too. I’ll soon be reducing my working hours too, so will hopefully have more time to do the things that bring me joy

I think it’s a natural progression of learning to want to do our best whatever our craft is, but so often the pursuit of doing that becomes a pressure to perform and a real “creativity sucker” 😉 Awareness, and a bit of kindness to ourselves can help get that back into balance. I think that’s awesome that colouring helps you to feel inspired for your other crafts and a perfect solution to creativity blocks - especially colour related ones! Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it a lot, Jackie

Hello! It was wonderful to get to know you a bit! Thank you for sharing about yourself and also how you use Inktense! My lovely husband just got me a full set for my birthday a few days ago so this video was perfect for me! I have seen quite a few tutorials on how to use them dry and then activated with water but I really like the look you get from taking the pigment from the pencil with a brush and painting on the page like that! Love your videos!

I started art seriously when I was pregnant with my first child.. my son who is 30 this year. So we are very similar in that way. I was very ill the first few months, lost my job (this was in the early 90's when businesses could get away with that), and then wound up on bed rest. I had nothing but time on my hands, stuck at home, unable to physically move much. I'd always loved art, and was crafty, but didn't think I could do fine art because I just can't draw.. never could. I decided to buy some paint after watching the TV painting shows on public television every day and discovered I still couldn't draw... but I COULD paint. Totally different skill. I never tried to sell my work but I did give a lot of it away as gifts when my walls were too full. I just painted what I wanted, without ever desiring to paint what others would pay me for. I was a stay at home mom for over 20 years and loved it.. I only went back to work because I had to after suddenly becoming single with a disabled child to support. I very much miss being able to live my own life. Now I trade most of my life for a paycheck. The coloring was an outlet for my art that I could do in short bursts without a lot of commitment in my rare spare time. I'm just not right if I'm not creating somehow.. it's like living without music.

Thanks for sharing ❤️ we do indeed seem to have a lot of similarities! I hope you get to have some more time for yourself, it must be frustrating as I do remember times when I’ve not been able to get that creative “fix”. I know what you mean - not being able to unwind or express yourself creatively is hard for creative people, and colouring is really easy to pick up and put down when you have small amounts of time (unlike all forms of painting). I really appreciate you watching and commenting, Jackie

@@sarahgriffin8667 yes, I do think there is much to be gained from the mistakes we make while learning new creative skills because it consolidates what we do like or enjoy 👍 if you feel challenged by colouring people, Google different faces and look at how light and shadows look on various skin tones and where they fall, it will help you a lot.

@@kirstendecoster3201 🤣 that’s so funny! I do find it very meditative myself, and have been finding talking while I work a little bit tricky (I’m hoping that becomes more natural as time goes on 😁) Working this way feels more like watercolour painting than colouring…and for some reason I find it much more relaxing than blending coloured pencils.

@@Spare_Room_Studio Maybe that's because of the movement. I love the feeling of colouring with markers, especially brush tips. It's too bad that waterbased markers give streaks, I don't think I would ever use anything else if they didn't. I can totally understand it's hard to paint and talk at the same time, but it's not noticeable, don't worry.

I loved watching you working those greens and blues together on Mr Merman. The end results are so pretty of that fluid wandering of colour. Do you ever use a watercolour ground on the paper first? I was still there at the end. But I watched in bursts over Saturday whilst doing other tasks. I want to get my watercolour pencils out now! But no, I have a dot shading image to finish first.

There are several of the new Inktense colors that are really great and fill a gap in the set (including a light pink), but a lot of them were too close to others (a complaint I have about the 72 set as well). I'd suggest picking up a few open stock. If you do want all the new ones Cult Pens was offering an expansion set of just those colors at a discount over single open stock.. that is where I got mine. Their shipping can be way too high at times to me here in the US.. but they do run shipping specials on occasion. Not sure what they charge to ship to Australia. It's a shame because there are a lot of products I can only get from them.. and it's rare that I order if I can't meet their very high minimum for free shipping.

@@lindaverkade438 how to let go of perfectionism? Well that’s a million dollar question! 😁 My personal experience is that I focus on one area - for example colouring. I sit down mindfully and try to pay attention to what my self-talk is saying….and I’d never talk to another that way so I practise being kinder with myself. I also allow myself to experiment and “play” more and that might mean using a cheaper book or supplies that don’t make me feel pressured to “perform” and I might never share those pages with anyone. But those page help to vent anxious energy or let off steam so to speak. I might try to talk about this a little more in another colour and chat. Until then, I hope you can enjoy your colouring time ❤️ regards, Jackie
