"They said DARK like it was a bad thing"
A Conversation on Colorism within the Black Community
University of South Florida
Applied Research Project
WHAT IS COLORISM?
Colorism is the practice of derogatory behavior or discrimination that favors one skin color over another. In the United States, colorism occurs when a person with light skin, straight or non-kinky hair, and more Eurocentric features is preferred over a person with darker skin, kinky hair, and Afrocentric features.
WHAT IS THE FOCUS?
This project used the documentary method to investigate how colorism affects Black people in the United States. It also uncovers how colorism has been perpetuated with media and how that helps create stereotypes.
WHAT I LEARNED...
- Colorism is perpetuated heavily in the Black community, but also in society.
- Many people understand the concept of intersectionality and framing but don’t know how to fully articulate the concepts outside of their own experiences.
- Colorism isn't just a social issue. It's very systematic and harmful for all people affected by it.
