"They said DARK like it was a bad thing"
A Conversation on Colorism within the Black Community
University of South Florida
Applied Research Project
WHAT IS COLORISM?
Colorism is the practice of derogatory behavior or discrimination that favors one skin color over another. In the United States, colorism occurs when a person with light skin, straight or non-kinky hair, and more Eurocentric features is preferred over a person with darker skin, kinky hair, and Afrocentric features.
WHAT IS THE FOCUS?
This project used the documentary method to investigate how colorism affects Black people in the United States. It also uncovers how colorism has been perpetuated with media and how that helps create stereotypes.
WHAT I LEARNED...
- Colorism is perpetuated heavily in the Black community, but also in society.
- Many people understand the concept of intersectionality and framing but don’t know how to fully articulate the concepts outside of their own experiences.
- Colorism isn't just a social issue. It's very systematic and harmful for all people affected by it.

god whenever i see colorism in all forms in all races across cultures it makes my skin crawl. The darkest of us are so strong and beautiful yet we don't treat them that way. All tones of Black and brown are beautiful!!! why do we even need this stupid discourse

Unfortunately, a lot of lighter skin people lean into their “lightness” and lean into their privileged. A lot of them have been programmed to believe they are prettier and better; which is harmful to BP who are darker. So idk if being inclusive along the complexion spectrum is necessarily helping resolve the issue of Colorism. Ex. DannyLee,QueenNaija,HazelE, and the list goes on and on-they have all made very problematic statements and even made songs that exposed their colorist attitudes and beliefs. I think it is counter-productive to spend time trying to educate people who feed into the colorism BS. Those who choose to believe that dark skin BP are jealous of them or that choose to believe that dark skin BP are ugly should be left to sit in their ignorance and left to sit in their self-hatred. Bcuz let’s be fr, most colorist are NOT that way bcuz of ignorance. They think that way bcuz they truly believe it, they have been programmed. A lot of them even when you show them the truth and facts and show the harm of colorism and point out the “light-skin privilege”, they get defensive and gaslight-very similar to WP who are r@yc!st and are called-out. Then the ones who refuse to see the truth have kids and pass on the BS, now that child is going to school with your darker skinned child and spewing the same BS onto your darkskin child and the cycle repeats. Bottom line, the brown and darker-skin BP are going to have to accept that most colorist CAN NOT be saved and they should be left alone and not interacted with. Period.

This was really informative and enlightening to say the least! So many important topics and perspectives of colorism touched on that we’re eye opening. Amazing job putting this together!

I understand. I am a dark skinned African American man. This stuff starts in our families and as early as elementary school with classmates. Self hate is real. IMO, It is not WHITE People. It’s us! White people just see a black person. Skin tone is not as much a factor. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will ever end. Hurt people hurt people.

That is not true….. majority of the BM incarcerated are darker skin BM…… most of the homeless are BP and most of them are dark skin BP. In schools WW are majority of the teachers in the educational system, they have done studies that prove that the lighter skin children get more attention and the darker skinned children tend to be ignored and receive less classroom instruction and help. They also tend to attach negative behavioral traits to the darker skin children more often also-to demonize and put your child on the school to prison pipeline. The darker skin children are reprimanded more for the same behaviors of yt children or lighter skin children. In social settings, WP don’t care to be around BP however a WP aggression level increases the darker the skin tone. That is why WP will tolerate light skin BP, bcuz their skin tone is close in proximity to their own perceived whiteness and not seen as a threat. A darker skin complexion BP, WP have an immediate defensive threatened response to and therefore tend to be more aggressive with the micro aggressions or as we see with the “Karen” epidemic they will just be overtly aggressively r@yc!st. So WP very much care about the skin tone, you saying this shows your own level of ignorance in this topic and you should probably educate yourself some more. Or at least re-evaluate your own social experiences and interactions.

Good conversation on colorism though i have my disagreements with the whole "you're not black you're jamaican" thing. It should be okay to identify with the culture you come from without it meaning you're self-hating or colorist. Unless there is more context to this, I don't see the issue with wanting to identify with your culture before your race. Identifying with your race first tells people nothing about you or where you come from. It only further puts black people in narrow boxes. We should be proud of who we are as a group of people but that doesn't mean you have to strip yourself of your cultural pride, either.

Black is a generic term used to describe “everyone of African descent who have African DNA throughout the diaspora”. So when Carribean people say things like that, Black Americans look at them like they crazy. It is pretty much a given that Africa is home base for all Black people of the world.

there's colorism in every community unfortunately. Indians & asians got it especially bad as well. There's some things about human nature as long as differences exist that'll never be the same.

Featurism and Colorism are interchangeable in the discrimination. It's the cognitive dissonance for me. It's as real as God's love for me. God knows the venim spit on us and does and will recompense.... Luke 14:14
