Yes, even though they did not design the latter two. It's very sad to see them going downhill so fast these days. I hope they can get their financial house in order and rebound, even if they, too, need to move South in order to remain profitable.

Nocturnal Toothbrush Not so old if you think about it but bet the newer plastic guns won't hold up that long unless barely touched. I like good old steel. Doesn't feel like I'm holding a squirtgun. Revolvers are not ammo picky or snappy like some micros. With small hands but long fingers, micros just feel too small even for me. I prefer my revolvers too. Maybe I watched too many spaghetti westerns as a kid. 😁

Back in the early 70s the widow of a long term Oregon Sheriff gave me her husband's old Colt SAA chambered in .38-40. Bullet is actually about 41 caliber. Gun came with belt, holster and several rounds in the loops. Ammo was so old it hanged fired. So I had to come up with brass and make my own loads. In later years because of cowboy action shooting .38-40 ammo became available again, but I still load my own. It is a pretty impressive round. It will put a 180 grain bullet just as deep in a log as a .357 mag with a 158 gr SWC. I sent the serial number to Colt and learned it was made in 1904. Like the one in this video, the bluing and case hardening have faded. And like the one in the video the action is still tight and it still shoots accurately. It will always be my favorite handgun. I carried it for years until I became aware of its value. So I semi retired it and bought a new generation Colt SAA in .45 Colt.

I do the same load 5 method when using my cap and ball revolvers. Especially when I'm riding around in a vehicle when hunting. I even take it a step further, I put it on the safety notch before the empty cylinder in case it gets accidentally cocked.

A vintage Colt 1873 model SAA is tempting and might be nice but would probably be more revolver than I want to take care of with aging parts and springs. Have a SA 5.5" Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt. It is a joy to use on the range and very different compared to DA revolvers with speed loaders and pistols with magazines. Six rounds with a loading gate means you need to make them count. General Patton carried a Colt SAA as a captain into the 1916-1917 Mexican Expedition that unsuccessfully pursued Pancho Villa around northern Mexico. He got into a firefight and realized his rate of fire was severely limited with reloading time, even when compared to his soldiers that were armed with 1903 Springfield bolt actions. He quickly bought a second one, using what would be called now a New York reload. Gave the second one away shortly after WWI during the 1920's to a Hollywood movie star he admired that had entertained the troops during the war, and replaced it with a Registered .357 Magnum in the 1930's. The .45 SAA and DA .357 magnum were what he carried on a gunbelt during WWII. Kept the General Officer Colt 1908 Pocket Hammerless .380 he was issued tucked into his waistband when he carried it. That's the pistol he used to shoot at a German fighter in low altitude strafing run while in North Africa.

Interesting stuff. When I was doing cowboy competition (SASS), that "New York Reload" was the order of the day. You almost always start with two loaded pistols, and you use them both. Two single action revolvers is quite a heavy "New York Reload," though. :-) Yeah, John and I have seen his guns at the Patton Museum up at Fort Knox, Ky. John and I used to stop and go through that pretty often when he was younger. After 9-11, it became more difficult to get on base to see it, at least for a gun packer. I think now they are changed things so that you do not have to actually go on base to get to the museum.

I have a Colt SAA chambered in .38-40 Win! 5 1/5 inch barrel! According to the serial number, Colt says it was made in 1904! Bluing and case hardening are long faded away, but action is tight and it still shoots true. Acquired it about 1970 or so, carried it until the early '90s when I decided it was too valuable to risk loss or damage, so I semi retired it and replaced it with a new SAA! That is my primary side arm to this day! The old gun saved my bacon late one night in Jan, 1973.

Love your old Colts, Hickok! Just one consideration for these old timers. Firing pins in old Colt SAAs are fixed. Dry firing can cause a burr on the inside of the frame (recoil plate) where the firing pin arcs down and pokes out. In the mid-60s, Colt started using a floating firing pin. They wiggle a bit so less likely to cause a burr.

For those of you wondering why he loads in one, skips a chamber, then loads four more, it’s so the hammer does not rest on the primer of a round. When you’ve got these older Colt revolvers, such as the Colt Single Action Army, there is no safety between the hammer and the rounds in the chamber, and they can go off prematurely, even if the hammer isn’t back.
@mdd1963
@mdd1963 6 жыл бұрын
I think the danger is from the hammer being struck causing the preemie, not so much of a spontaneous preemie in the holster. :)
@gregoblv5561
@gregoblv5561 6 жыл бұрын
It is he striking of the hammer that can cause the firing pin to hit the primer. This applies to all most all Colt SSA type of six guns should be loaded the same way. Uberti is the largest manufacturer of SSA's today has come out with a new model that they say will be safe to load 6, but I have not seen one myself. I have the previous model and it is a 5 run gun. Rugers have a safety in them allowing 6. To those that have not shot one, have let 2 friends shoot mine and they both want one. One's wife can't shoot it enough. :-)

I have a Colt SAA made in 1904 chambered in .38-40! My all time favorite handgun. Originally belonged to a long time sheriff in Oregon. His widow gave it to me in about 1970. Was my carry gun for years until I learned it was too valuable to risk. So I got a new generation in .45 colt. Carry it often, but still shoot the old girl from time to time.

@Terry Dean Channel Yes, they sure would! Speaking of older Model '94s, when I was a teenager went elk hunting with some fellows. One of them, a U of WY student, showed up with an old '94 rifle with a long octagon barrel. As I recall it was his grandfather's gun. He took a horrible ribbing about his "Red Ryder" BB gun! But while the rest of us were trying to get our scoped hunting rifles un-slung from our shoulders this fellow dropped to one knee and nailed a nice bull elk going at a dead run. One shot, right behind the right ear, about 50 yards! Because of that, my primary hunting rifle became a pre-64 Model. It has taken Mule Deer, Elk, and Pronghorns.

Great video on a great gun! My SAA .45 was made in 1898, and is a great shooter in superb shape I have recently added a 1905 Bisley in .38 WCF to the collection. The Bisley has the finest factory trigger pull I have ever encountered, BTW. Also have the Winchester 1892 in .38 WCF as a companion to the Bisley. Of course I have modern weapons as well, but to me, they are like mechanics tools. They serve a purpose, but have no soul.

My dad is 80 and he said his uncle gave him an original when he was a kid and one of his older brothers took it and never seen it again. I would have it now

I've got a U.S. Firearms (now defunct!) SAA .45LC, awesome Gun! I had an original Colt Bisley Model chambered in 44/40. I sold it and bought a Colt LE6920 AR platform. I miss the Bisley Model. I still USFA .45LC.

What a timeless classic, I would feel better armed with a colt .45 than any polymer wonder 9!!

If you don't like this gun you probably think a polymer wonder 9 has soul. Rarely does something brand new have soul and character.
