I agree. But this episode saw Falk and Pleshette in extreme conflict, because he repeatedly wanted to change lines and scenes. That final scene wasn't done with them both in the same place, and the museum walkout is Pleshette with a stand-in. She had by this time refused to work with him. I believe Peter Falk tried to take a lot of control over all aspects of the show, and it didn't go down well - not with anyone.

He had an agreement with the show to direct and when he wasn't allowed to, he stayed away. It was part of his contract and when it wasn't honored, he stayed away. In this case, it was unfortunate that she was caught in the middle of it, but to throw Peter Falk under the bus like that was hardly a classy thing to do. She would have been better to have been mad at those not honoring the contract they made with Falk. Easier to just blame the star, though, I suppose. As the poster below, said, it sure didn't impede the show's progress, or the number of stars who not only came on the show, but in many cases came on it repeatedly.

This particular episode was written by Professor John T. Dugan (October 11, 1920 New York City - December 24, 1994 Los Angeles, CA). Dr. Dugan was a Professor of Drama, having obtained a Master of Fine Arts at Fordham University and a Ph.D. in Drama from the University of Minnesota. He taught drama at Catholic University, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and U.C. Berkeley. John Dugan disproves one of the old funny sayings I grew up with: “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. And those who can’t teach, teach gym.” He had been published, performed, and produced in every medium except the novel. His many television plays have received numerous awards and nominations, as have his stage plays. Professor Dugan also served his fellow writers for 28 years on the Board of Directors of the Writers Guild of America Pension Plan. Professor Dugan also wrote another terrific Columbo episode entitled "The Most Crucial Game," co-starring the Culpable One, the great Bob Culp.

You can see, even _feel,_ the weight of his actions, and this- their ramifications- on his shoulders. Yet he calmly, even nobly, accepts that burden as the excellent soldier he is. It's why Columbo says the handcuffs won't be needed, and he walks out of his own free will. Even as a murderer, he is worthy of dignity.

The only thing better than watching an episode of Columbo after a hard day is watching it with someone who appreciates it and seeing their reactions. @@46monkeyes Peter Falk was feuding with the studio over them reneging on some contract details. As a result he wasn't on set as much as the shooting schedule demanded. Thus to complete the episode they did some shots with a body double.

I realize that this show came out in the 70's and things were different back then but, even with Marine guards there would've been a lock on the display case holding a fully functional revolver as beautiful as that one was. He shouldn't have been able to just slide the door open and pull it out like that.

If you watch Closely, there was a contract dispute going on with Falk. He refused to work. They continued making this episode with out him. In this total 8 minutes of film, there is only about minute and a half where Falk is acting with Pleshette. You see in every part of Alberts portion of this, he's interacting with a Falk "Double", It's not Falk at any time where you see Columbo and Albert on camera here. When it was all done, Albert told Falk, "I always wanted to work with you. I never realized you were such a prick".

Columbo was in contract disputes so he wasn't filming with Eddie and Suzanne. They were going to RIP him off...like other actors of shows at that time...ie. Gilligan's Island. Don Adams, of Getsmart, advised Peter.

Why why why during the man's honorary exhibition? Why not after? He doesn't seem to be a flight risk. Columbo so humble in nature yet takes pride in timing his "gotcha" moments that are horrible to assailants.

What's interesting is that the last part of the movie (most of this video) was filmed with double actors and then remounted scene by scene. This is why the background sound changes so often. At that time, Peter Falk had some arguments with the producer, and he threated not to finish the movie. So they filmed with a double (the double is taller than Suzanne Pleshette, while Peter is shorter). After a while, he returned and filmed the missing scenes, also with doubles (but they don't appear in the release).

I find it interesting that the dénouement is presented essentially with Eddie Albert (and Pleshette) responding to an offscreen reader: we are meant to imagine a proximity to Falk that is not there. Perhaps because there was so much bad feeling on set in this episode (driven by Falk's misplaced machinations to become a Columbo director)?

During filming of this episode, I have read that Albert and Falk had a private moment about their experiences during WWII. Falk commented that Albert was a bonafide war hero, while he (Falk) was just a Merchant Seaman. Albert replied, “We both accepted great risk, and we both had our duties to perform” or something to that effect.
