With the recent attacks and chaos in Afghanistan, I wanted to sit down with someone who spent years on the front lines in that theater and who better than John “Shrek” McPhee.

Regular listeners know him well but for those who have not yet heard of him, John is also known as the Sheriff of Baghdad and spent 20 years in the Army’s Special Operations community, from Ranger Battalion to Group to Delta Force. He retired as a Sergeant Major from the most elite unit in the US Military and now owns SOB Tactical.
As usual, Shrek holds nothing back and gives an operator’s perspective of what is happening and why this outcome was always going to be the case.
Most importantly, however, is John’s message to the thousands of veterans processing these scenes, emotions, and memories.
While I had Shrek, I took the opportunity to ask some questions we’ve received from listeners, we talk whiskey, and find out what Shrek watches on Netflix.

John is such a unique and candid individual. His perspective comes from experience and he is honest and not afraid to talk about the massive elephant in the room. He gets that corruption, fraud and deceit are behind much of what the fake news spins as just unfortunate situations. Ryan you are a great host and interviewer. These podcasts very captivating conversations.

Fantastic mental health nuggets inside of down to earth “guy” talk just like around the barracks or late night after midnight chow. Shreks comments about purpose and about continuing to take care of the people around us need to be heard, and taken to heart, by every combat vet. It helps us to understand ourselves and to guide our thinking back into positive energy and to get away from those self-destructive lies. Thanks much, and please, keep the conversations going.

I love John. He's so down to earth. He doesn't play and want everyone to know he was a badass sf operator. He says, half the time it was shit shows. He says, if you make a plan. There's no reason with the best assets in the world yu can't pull off your plan. Seals say " if something can go wrong it will go wrong. Murphys law shows up", and they want you to know they were badges, made it thru buds, war is hell, bla bla, John is down to earth.

SOB your statement on Technology Reliance was spot on. I wish you could have seen the War College AAN war games in the last 90s - as soon as the technological advantage of the Allied Forces was lost on the battlefield, the Allied Officers would ask for a restart of the exercise and you could see their frustration. This outcome was set long before.

This man is a top 5 interview guest in this genre or space and CS a top 2 or 3 platforms. That said, not having the comms worked out degraded the opportunity Not enough to lose appreciation amd,respect for the SOB or Ryan but still. I'd love to hear from this pair the AAR from the incident in Tora Bora when the Afghans (embedded) turned on Delta operators and and I read - I believe in "Dalton Fury's" account of the incident - a Mexican standoff ensued. Keep up the great stories and guests, Ryan, and God Bless men like McPhee and others who bring the heat to our enemies.

Hello ! Thanks for the great podcast and videos, etc.. This is a pretty good interview to keep people talking for two years McPhee is mentioning carpet bombing and the fact that we do not do this well, I am 62 years old at this point, and I can say that I remember daddy BUSH doing his initial invasion into Iraq, in order to calm saddam down….. perhaps there were secret missions where troops were on the ground I would suspect that someone would have to point a laser here and there for target direction but if I remember correctly, the very first, I think it was called desert storm if I’m not mistaken, it was simply carpet bombing and hitting supposed weapons of destruction etc. in what I remember the US tried it both ways… I failed to mention that I am a Canadian and both Canadian troops who were in Afghanistan, and apparently not in Iraq except for some special operators but I’ve always been appreciative of the Canadian and the US military for looking after us. Unfortunately, we have clowns in political seats here, which is not really what I wanted to get into, the politics and religion is something that I’m not really interested in getting into however, I just wanted to make a point that the government did try the carpet bombing or the mindset of the second ball war but unfortunately apparently that didn’t work….. but you are doing a great job and thanks…..

Kentucky native and avid whisk(e)y enthusiast, yes Buffalo Trace does produce all of those bourbons John mentioned. However they are NOT the same mashbill, Pappy and Weller are both wheated bourbons, which happen to be the same mashbill. Wellers is the one that didn't make the cut to be Pappy Van Winkle, Ancient Age and Buffalo Trace are both normal bourbons with rye being the flavor grain instead of wheat.
