Your not the only Taekwondo instructor that has this same opinion on Kombat Taekwondo. I just can't figure out what kombat taekwondo is going for. The events are being run like a European WAKO event with several days of amateur mat events that use pads and look kinda cool. Then the professional version goes to a cage and looks like weird MMA with people that shouldn't be doing MMA. I am a combat sports bro and I love Karate Combat for what it is. I like the old ProTKD videos I have seen. I think they need to rethink Kombat Taekwondo for it to be successful, but I hope they figure it out because I can always use another company to watch. Thanks for answering my question.

I'm almost a blue belt and I've been considering the fact that within a few years I'll be expected to start teaching and co-teaching classes to get my black belt. Do you have any general advice about how to transition from student to teacher, things to avoid doing or things you wish you would have known? apologies if you've covered this previously. Thanks :) (hope your hip recovery is going well)

Dang is it Tuesday already? Sheesh! I will have to check this out later. By the way I have here a book called Tae Kwon Do The Korean Martial Art by Richard Chun. It is a Kukkiwon endorsed book fro 1973 and it features free sparring using all kinds of techniques like face punches, hammer fists, leg sweeps, and throws. Like MMA Taekwondo version. But minus the ground fighting. So apparently combat Taekwondo is not a new concept and doesn't need the word "combat" before it.

Taekwondo is the cricket of the martial arts. Very fun to play; boring as hell to watch. This is speaking as a fellow taekwondo practitioner! And yeah I fully agree with your comment that there is already an avenue for the more agrressive fighting, which is kickboxing. Call me boring but I really enjoy the strategy involved in playing olympic tkd! I do kickboxing too and I love it, but victory for me there is more on brute force irrespective of connections to the body. The two cant really mix in my view.

i think that the pro tkd from the 90s is some of the best stand up fighting you can watch, its kind of like the tkd version of kyokushin karate. I do personally enjoy the new karate combat league, and there is (at least 1)tkd stylist in it.

I would like to see a TKD variant with a wrestling element. I come to combat sports and martial arts for their practical effectiveness. A fencing only setting,for how athletic it can be,it far too removed from reality. Boxing has trouble already working as a hands only sport,but has a good record in self defence. I have been wondering why it is not the same for the respective (limbs) TKD. A certain clinching skill can be appreciated,like how in Taekkyon,where takedown or push out were winning conditions. A lot of TKD focus a lot on spinning and jumping kicks ,so i wonder what the core 4 (jab cross hook uppercut) are in tkd,conceptually.

Hello Master Paul: If i may, I'd like to make a suggestion and then ask a question: 1) The suggestion: please find a way to monetize for yourself every single instance someone comments in any martial arts video comments section: "tHaT'lL nEvEr wOrK iN a sTrEeTfIgHt". That revenue stream could be highly lucrative for you!* *tongue-in-cheek sarcasm 2) The question: thank you for covering in multiple videos the realties of running and keeping running a martial arts studio. I understand that not every class can cover every individual's needs and wants out of a martial arts style. I'm 55 and the adult classes for our tkd studio have to cover a very broad range of ages, abilities, belt rankings, fitness levels, etc. Our class ranges from middle school students all the way to a fossil like me. Having said that, i really think our instructors do a really good job of putting together classes that engage and challenge that wide range of students. One thing we don't get the chance to cover is something I'd like to ask you: how would you suggest teaching a student to engage multiple opponents simultaneously? Is there something in our poomsae perhaps that a student can practice to help them deal with the tricky scenario of multiple opponents? Thank you for your hard work, and i can endorse your poomsae videos; they've been a very helpful supplement to class instruction

The foot sweeps thing are very much karate. Sport TKD has always been pure striking. Adding them into Kombat Taekwondo is basically just pandering to boomers who complain that TKD is supposed to be a "complete art, like karate." I think a pure striking modality for TKD would be more interesting--more leeway for punches, but still dominant on kicks. Trying to replicate Karate Combat is not the way to go. I also think that they're under the mistaken impression that "old school" power era taekwondo was something that it's not. They aren't going to get pure highlight reels like you see on KZfaq. As fighters calibrate to the rule set, most of the fighters will settle into an equilibrium that's less active and flashy than they hope.

I will never understand why these people don’t just do karate. If you want beef stop ordering pork and complaining that beef is better. Agreed, I don’t think it will be as exciting as they are hoping.

@@tkdguideI don't mean to be too cynical, but you've already basically made the same criticism. These people will stop supporting KT and go back to complaining about how watered down TKD is because they are couch quarterbacks at the end of the day and most will never lift a finger to forward taekwondo in one direction or another. At the end of the day, Olympic sparring was the best move to differentiate TKD on the combat sports scene internationally. The complainers are neurotic and insecure and we should stop pretending like they have a seat at the adult table. All hail the mighty cut kick.

Boomers? I don't know any boomers who say that at all. Boomer actually say the opposite and post on MArtial Arts Planet and say things like "Taekwondo is non-violent and is about respect and discipline and being a good person! Not how great of a fighter you are!" However some millenials and gen zers do talk about how Taekwondo should be more serious about fighting.

Wow, did I really annoy you that bad with my amazing and detailed response on the other video? I thought you liked the interaction for the algorithm. Anyway, the annoying traditionalists in my opinion are the types of dorks that frequent martial arts planet and say things like, "If you were a TRUE black belt you wouldn't be so disrespectful!" and expect you to bow and say Master so and so etc.

Wow, I had never heard of Kombat Taekwondo before this video. I did however know of a group in the early 2000's that called itself Combat Taekwondo, but it was a system of Taekwondo with belt ranks etc. I just watched a few clips of Kombat Taekwondo and I have to say it is incredibly boring. I agree that Taekwondo guys should just enter MMA or K1 kickboxing etc. The rules for Kombat Taekwondo are dumb. It's like they are trying to be more like MMA but stillh ave dumb rules. If you are going to go more aggressive and allow more techniques just go all out!! Not being allowed to grab someone but you can sweep them or elbow them? makes no sense.

Imo taekwondo seems like a good art for people who are a bit older 35+, because there's a lower chance of getting injured, they will improve their mobility, and physically get fitter. This is a bit subjective but katas should be avoided because you don't want to feel like you're wasting your time doing a pattern instead of doing the fun part which is kicking

You miss the point of forms (kata). Forms build timing, and moving skills. They are more of a "brain balancing" activity then anything. If you have never heard of "brain balancing", look it up. It is a very beneficial approach to creating skills. Especially I children, and especially for kids with ADD.
@gladiumcaeli

@@burnstileinstallation9563 here's the thing imagine a paying customer who has never done sports in their life wanting to start a sport. If they see on their left people doing katas and on their right people punching and kicking the bag, guess which one they would gravitate towards. Again my point was that people would rather do something that is fun, and katas are not fun to do.
