NOTE: Combat Story is launching a Patreon account later this month. Sign-up here: www.combatstory.com/patreon
Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
This is the Combat Story of Bob Keller, a retired Special Missions Unit or Delta Force operator who spent his entire military career in the Special Operations community. Bob began his career as a U.S. Army Ranger and Special Forces Green Beret before transitioning to the Unit.
Bob spent several years as a professional golfer before finding his calling as a soldier. As an operator, he was in more than 400 engagements and 1,000 missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other undisclosed locations.
After retiring, Bob founded Gamut Resolutions, a tactical and practical shooting program that uses the Ready-Up training methodology to help students survive any situation. He also oversees a charity that provides elite shooting courses to police, for free.
In this episode, Bob provides fascinating insight into the confidence, training, and experiences of a Tier 1 operator. I hope you enjoy this Combat Story as much as I did.

Interviewing a Family Member or Friend: Hi everyone. We wanted to let people know that if you're interested in having Ryan interview a family member or friend about their combat experience so you have a story that can be shared with family for years to come, please email ryan@combatstory.com. We're often asked if we can interview family members who don't want to share their story publicly, which is understandable. We know how important it is to capture these stories for our families, however, as Ryan has done with his own father. If you feel you have a family member who would appreciate sharing their story with a fellow veteran that can then be passed down privately to family and friends, please contact us. Thanks and stay safe!

Every Green Beret that I’ve had the pleasure to meet have pretty much all used the same philosophy when it comes to passing on their knowledge/training: “I’ll teach you everything I know but if you find a better way, or something that works better for you, do that instead. I trust that mindset far more than the “my way or the highway” mindset.

The corollary to "if you find a better way or something that works better for you, you do that instead," is "you teach me if you ever get the chance."

I worked with an retired MARSOC Raider who saw action in the early 2000s. First time I found out was him showing me a massive through and through stomach wound. Never met a nicer person in my life and he was so relaxed. I’ve also worked with retired Navy Seals. In my experience these elite guys come in every shape, size, and color and are some of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to know.

The United States Army has the most professional Special Operations units. They don't write books they don't publicize and they do everything in the shadows. People seem to forget or don't want to understand that Green Berets and the Delta Force have a Marine time capability also. During Delta selection you have to rely on yourself they do not use teamwork as other units do it's harder to draw strength from your inner self than it is to draw strength amongst your teammates. No doubt they do work in teams later on but this is just the selection. I appreciate that the Army Special Operations units keep to themselves that is very humble and respectful. They do what must be done and then return back to the Shadows and never asked to be praised. They deserve so much.

Bro enough with this whole “SeALs PuBlIsH BoOks”😂😂😂 So what if some do. They’d still bust your door down and off you as if nothing happened. There’s even been green berets who published books as well. Hell, there’s even a whole freaking movie called the “Green Berets”. Always an army guy berating on Seals 🙄😂😂

Him talking about his childhood made me smile man. I remember reading all my dads combat and survival manuals and trying to build snares and lean to's in the woods. All I ever wanted to be was a Ranger like all the men I looked up to. Unfortunately for me I made a ton of terrible decisions as a young man and disqualified myself. I tried over and over and over to get in the Army and Marines with no luck. I'm pretty successful now days and I still shoot guns and spend every minute of my free time in the outdoors so life isn't that bad but I can't say I'm terribly passionate about the oil and gas industry.

You're probably one of the most stand up people in your community because of that attitude. Be positive, keep your hopes up. No one is gonna care about your shit when Russia pushes in Polands border. I have a similar story dude, you grow where you are. If you don't like where you are you have legs and a mind to change things for the better. Doesn't have to be overnight and nothing worth it doesn't take time. But that's life. You're a good guy dude, keep the vision up. We're gonna have a really interesting time going forward - without reservation. But you're keeping America running, so you're doing your part too.

"My memory sucks by the way" .. I wish I still had the link to an article from about 15 years ago where a doctor was part of a study on emergency responders and their short-term memory. His conclusion was they suffer from some short and long-term memory loss due to their work styles. He said that going from zero to 100 in a few seconds from the adrenalin dump (over and over) was the suspected cause of this phenomenon. My bet is the same for soldiers too.

I know an old timer from 20th, early early 2000's deployments as well as some white side stuff prior. He is the most intelligent guy I have ever met and tactically sound? You wouldn't believe it. I once went to take a leak and this guy walked out of a shadow and had somehow pinch some nerve or thing in my neck. He said something badass and intimidating, but I can't remember what it was. 20th guys are squared away for sure.

A quote from an article written about Bob: Special Operations veteran John Schaible served with Keller “overseas.” “We got into a lot of live-fire engagements with the enemy,” Schaible said. “People would ask if I shot anybody. The truth is, I shot at people who were probably already dead, because people like Bob got on the trigger faster. I did an okay job out there, but guys like Bob did a better job than me. Bob was absolutely on time in serious situations that required that split-second decision-making process that kept a lot of his buddies alive. I’ve seen it happen on numerous occasions.”

@@brandonfaubert7180 I agree however I would like to see more of my fellow women here. I have heard of all these men during my service and they seemed like the ghosts of Machu Picchu. Therefore it’s rather extraordinary to be able to listen to them and their experiences. It’s also refreshing to hear that many of us think alike. Fighter pilots will kill you before the enemy. I literally laughed out loud when Shrek said that since that’s exactly what I experienced and was taught. No hard feelings for all the pilots out there.

I am a retired 0369 Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant, I served for 32 years and I can tell you wars are won and lost on the ground. I wish someone would actually interview the forgotten war fighters on the front line. I have the feeling that some have forgotten where they came from or, their egos and self importance truly make them feel those warfighters aren’t important enough and that’s extremely disrespectful to the 11B’s infantryman of the US Army and the 03 infantrymen of the United States Marine Corps that served 5-7 tours in combat. War fighters are warfighters and I can assure you when your in a firefight and bullets, mortars, artillery and IEDs are flying around and blowing up you want those guys in the fight with you. I have no more or less respect for Special Operation guys than I have for all the warfighters on the frontline that pushing through the objective at all cost with everything being thrown at you to include the kitchen sink. It’s really tiring listening to the news media and you’d swear the only ones fighting are Special Forces and that’s si far from the truth. Maybe you’ll take a moment and interview a warfighter that fought on the frontline for hours on hours and days at a time with none stopping fighting, That will never happen.
