Thank you David. I have been watching all the popular non duality videos, teachers etc. I’ve been watching all the philosophy videos trying to piece it all together. There always seemed to be a missing piece of the puzzle. I stopped watching these videos as they were not useful any longer. The best KZfaq channels are the ones that let you know that what they say must be held lightly. I too realized that the road to freedom involves mustering more compassion for yourself than you have ever done before. No small feat for most of us. IFS has been the missing link for me. You should reach out to Dick Schwartz to come on your channel , you’d both have a fabulous discussion. 😊

Yes! I would love to see that discussion. IFS would have been tough for me without having learned how to identify feelings in the body, and buddhist practices gave me clear instructions and a space to learn that. It could be helpful for lots of people to use those practices to bridge the gap. Or, just give therapists more practical language to guide their clients. “Feel your feelings” is too vague 😅

It’s useful for me to be more precise in labeling something an emotion versus a thought. Being unwanted is a thought. I think I am unwanted and relatedly think I will always be alone. The feeling is deep sadness. At some moment, it may even feel the deepest continuum of sadness, which is despair. I think for a lot of people there is some usefulness in first examining why they feel angry before getting to the sadness beneath from the sense of being unwanted/rejected. And there’s almost always some kind of belief in a should or a shouldn’t. My friend shouldn’t have talked behind my back. There’s a belief to unravel. But as you say, going beyond that is essential. I actually call it going behind it. Anger is almost always an emotion that has something else behind it. Basically it almost always means I’m not getting something that I want, but that alone is still on the surface because what’s wrong with not getting what I want? Somehow more deeply, it means something that is the underlying thought, and that thought is often associated with either fear or sadness. Even though it could be used for bypassing, the idea of non-duality seems like it would be a useful context if somebody actually had that experience to examine the situation and do the exploration from. I have heard in other groups that there are people who actually do not feel a sense of being a separate person, but they still experience these emotions and even beliefs. They say it’s quite puzzling to them because it feels like they’re not happening to anybody. But I agree with you thatbeing willing to examine them and experience them deeply as part of the path to freedom.

So informative… led to a complete new recognition of how we create our world of separation. Never looked upon it this way. Had a fuzzy kind of intuition how IFS was a liberating method but got stuck somehow and lost my trust in it a bit, so this was very helpful in order to open it up anew. Thank you! ❤🙏🏼

David, thanks so much for sharing so much about your journey with this. What do you make of the fact that shadow material and repressed emotion can remain after no-self realization? If there’s truly no self, where do you think this material is able to hide and what’s able to repress it?
@Davidmcdonald1
@Davidmcdonald1 3 ай бұрын
I think “no self realisation” is just that, a realisation. That says nothing about whether or not it is deeply embodied. True no self is embodied and seen when one goes through the shadow. Identity, the one who is broken, the one who is of no value, the one that needs the world is at the core of all your anger, anxiety, fear, jealousy, depression, greed. If all of that still remains, no self hasn’t been fully embodied. It’s a long path

@@Davidmcdonald1 Maybe I’m not understanding how you define “realization”. My sense has been that it (at least as Angelo uses the term) is meant to be synonymous with deep embodiment, but you seem to be defining it as something more superficial than that but less superficial than mere cognitive understanding. Is that accurate? My bigger question is this: I was under the impression that you thought you had done the work to go through the shadow when you had what seemed like a significant shift into no-self but have recently been finding out that that shadow work wasn’t done. Is that the case? If so, do you expect that an even bigger shift into no-self will come when you finish that work? Sorry for all the questions but the info on this stuff is murky and these things would be valuable for me to understand IMO. 🙏

@@RyanBowcutt Anatta is simply a clear experiential recognition that is there is no background to experience, no sub stratum, no witnesser, container, there are just the appearances. Its is the nature of reality. That can come as an insight, a clear recognition but it takes time for it to be embodied. That’s how I look at it, as well as many Buddhists I have spoken to. Yes! You will be surprised just how deep the shadow goes, and I am coming in contact with all of it like never before, because the self structure is loose if that makes sense, there’s very little to resist or push it down anymore. I’m skeptical of anyone claiming sudden no self realisation where every single bit of emotional work now becomes unnecessary. It’s the marketing promise of enlightenment right? Something to come along and fix all of your problems so you don’t have to feel any of it. True no self is the complete reversal of that

@@Davidmcdonald1 Thanks a ton for the replies David! Just to clarify, I wasn't referring to any claims of emotion/shadow work being rendered unnecessary by anatta. I was just under the impression that anatta couldn't happen until that work was all done. But you cleared that up and Angelo also told me a couple days ago that it's necessary for this work to continue after anatta. Thanks again! :)

This has been my experience is that I feel something tight in the body but I've so far had to Actively inquire and actively surrender and console the protective mechanism. A far cry from the message of non doer ship. It certainly feels like a choice being made over and over otherwise the aversion stays completely intact, ego mind is all about the expansion Going in to the emotion body, not so much 😂
@GumbyTheGreen1

When the message of non-doership is properly given and understood, I don’t think it conflicts with what you’re describing just as it doesn’t conflict with any other kind of inquiry. The identity structure has to see and dismantle itself. Of course this feels like doership but what’s the alternative?
