Bit of a different one for you today, showing you exactly what we do before the fish shop opens every single morning. You've all been asking to see more behind the scenes of running an aquarium shop so here is another snippet.
There are a huge amount of jobs that easily go unnoticed when working in the aquarium industry, but spending the time doing this helps to make sure you know what's going on in and around the store.

Know what you mean. My local ish one is amazing, staff are always ready to give help, but another one I go to has staff there that don't seem to care much about anything. And they've just had to down size (apparently due to lack of customers).

Agreed. I have 2 Maidenheads equidistant from me...and they're OK...but they aren't like this one. That's for sure. Usually understaffed and the tanks just don't look as nicely maintained. That said, they are leaps and bounds of many multi-franchise pet stores in terms of general fish care.

I adore this idea to show the tasks needed to really operate a shop! Retail shop work has a lot of these jobs anyway, the steps taken to keep the fish healthy and happy adds a whole element of care and complexity I enjoy.

One thing I really like about the shop you work at is the ever-changing selection of uncommon fish. It does get kind of boring seeing the same cardinal tetra and tiger barb all the time

Had you left all the tanks open when you wiped the glass, you could have fed them and closed the covers as the next step. This would eliminate the one extra open and close step.

You have a cool looking shop wicked fish selection I’m confused what community fish I can keep in hard water I see a lot of different info online some reports say quite specific water perimeters and others say there quite adaptable so it’s not so important

With all those tanks have any ever spontaneously burst or crack? I worry a lot about the water damage aspect of keeping several tanks, and how that high humidity can negatively effect my house

Very rarely do tanks burst, if you look after it and don't buy a really cheap one it's very rare.

The shop fascinates me with how it runs like a well oiled machine. How long did it take to get things to this point of running smoothly? How often do things go not quite so well?

Thank you! It's far from a well oiled machine, the thing with aquarium shops is that there is so much piping and so many electrical items something is always trying to cause trouble somewhere.

Hi Matt, I think yourself or MD should do a tank with Nanochromis Transvestitus since it’s a not so well known fish amongst the community and with its behaviour and considering it’s size for a cichlid I think it would be a great idea for a project.

I have to figure it's an average of two hours with the minimum amount of 1 1/2 hours for Fish Shop Matt w/ a proper cuppa dark roast and I am going to make a uneducated guess he has enjoyed a menthol or two , perhaps a Nat Sherman or Chesterfield ☕️🚬☕️

what are the nets disinfected with ? looking for something but dont want to risk chemicals going into my tanks :/

We use a veterinarian disinfectant that's tricky to get hold of unless you work in the industry. Best way at home is boiling water poured over the nets and left to soak in it. Very little will survive that and a few fish facilities I've visited do that instead of disinfectant.

Personally rather than 100 more tank videos. Some short 5-10 minutes videos about running the financials of your own fish shop, finding reliable whole salers, dealing with loss, stories of success, treating fish when the whole tank is falling apart. Would be more interesting.........
