Deborah Sampson demonstrates great courage by disguising herself as a man to fight for America in the Revolutionary War.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

She was honorably discharged but also severely handicapped by her leg wound and was initially denied her pension because she was a woman. She wrote to Ben Franklin asking for help and he spoke on her behalf about her right to a military pension for her service.

Actually, she was 5'9...a descendant named Pauline, who supposedly looked just like Deborah, was 6' tall. Still, most men around that time averaged 5'6-5'8, and women averaged 5 feet tall...so her height definitely helped. Historians also say she had very small boobies, so she could pull off looking like a guy easily.

Drunk History, I adore you! I’ve been waiting for this story for years! I’ve known about Deborah since my young, dorky, library perusing, biography reading, days as a kid. And Paget tells it sooooooo well! It twists me up inside when people say, “Why didn’t they teach this in school?!” Because, to be frank: anyone can read a book, teach themselves, and take control of their own knowledge - at any point in life. School’s not supposed to be the only place we learn, nor the last time we pick up a book. But for a lot of people, it is. And that both breaks my heart and feels incredibly annoying.

I did a living biography for her in 4th grade. I found out about her from a Carnegie library book that my third grade teacher had lent me. I now do living history as an 18 year old and she was the thing that got me into it.

For all those surprised to see this side of Paget Brewster, please check out her arc on "Community," season 6, as Frankie Dart. She's a gifted comic actress.
