I worked for Amazon, and I can confirm it is one of the least compassionate companies in existence. I got fired for "job abandonment" when my car broke down. I lived too far away to get there without it. I followed all call-out procedures daily. It took five days to get it fixed, and when I came back on the fifth day, my badge wouldn't work to get into the warehouse. A guard came and took the badge to "have it checked," and called HR. He told me someone would come up to resolve it shortly. They left me standing there for over an hour, without anyone talking to me. Finally, I understood what they had done, and left. When I got home and checked my email, I found that HR had sent a message right after the guard had taken my badge, informing me I had been fired. Funny thing is I still get emails asking if I would like to come back, which is par for the course among Amazon employees. See, unless you steal from the company, or commit an act of sexual harassment or violence on company premises, you'll never be ineligible for rehire. The company uses this to claw back company stock and other retirement benefits before they can vest. Then, after a few weeks, they offer to hire people back: workers who won't need any training or period of adjustment to the Amazon way of doing things. There's a reason Jeff Bezos looks so much like a Bond villain. The man's company would make Dr. Evil blanche.

If I can't get something from a local store, lately I've been shopping on individual companies' websites, even if I could get their products from Amazon. It means I have to keep a little box of index cards with my passwords for each of the websites, and it probably costs a little more for shipping, but I can afford it and it's worth it.

Everything in America is profit driven. I used to work in a hospital where my immediate superior would commonly suggest that I forego giving medications, and just send the patient up to their room; which delayed that person getting their medicine for at least an hour. All to push push push to open up a bed for another customer.

If 'everything in America' was profit driven, there wouldn't be an *artificial limit* on the number of Doctors, idiot. People could choose to go to *competing doctors without a license* and pay *less money* and be *treated better* - but that's currently forbidden by socialist law! Our medical system is a socialist medical system, not a capitalist one lmao that's why doctors need a LICENSE to practice and their numbers are artificially LOWERED by med schools limiting accepted applicants You tried to skewer capitalism but ended up pointing out YET ANOTHER FLAW of socialism XD
@d.e.b.b5788
@d.e.b.b5788 6 жыл бұрын
The number of medical schools is currently limited by federal laws, by which medical schools must be accredited, or graduates cannot get a license to practice medicine, which is strongly supported by the AMA lobby. This in order to limit the number of doctors. Otherwise there would be a glut of physicians, just as there is with lawyers. It's all about money. Doctors protect their businesses.

Official Vidici He probably has his own business, that is why he can take that time, so he cannot compare his life with yours as an employee. Now, if you had your own business in Europe you could also do what he has done, the difference then it would be how harder it is to have a business in Europe compared to the USA? I know a business owner in the USA who works a lot but is kind of unhappy. He loves Europe, so he goes there a lot. He says Europeans know how to enjoy life and are smarter. He used to live in France and moved back to USA because he felt envious towards his American friends making more money, yet he is not happy. The US is good to making many but not for being happy in the long term. In Europe maybe you won't become rich, but you will have more than you need and have a life outside from work. Your choice.

D. N. Well it isnt really a hastle to start your own buissnes, most people have their firms or companies (i am bilingual but i dontknow technical terms, pardon me) for if they are doing some offhand jobs say you are a fotographer for a magazine but you do marketing for some british hotel here, but with starting your buissnes even if you technically already have with what i just said thats bassicaly just you working for your bank account, since here you cant have a restaurant that you dont personally attend since there is always something to be done there (and here your own time is cheaper than more employees haha) you cant open up any office buissnes since there isnt a huge need for them maybe an insurance company but you would need EU funds fo that, disregarding my long winded tangent- its not hard to open a bussines its that we dont really need any if a guy opened a shop he'd be out of buissnes immediately if it wasnt say some electronics specialty stuff but again you need EU funds since buying space, equipment and people ("buying people", can you tell i just woke up?) is too expensive for the average Ivan and Ivanka, great chat by the way, i'll replay if you have more to add on im enjoying this conversation, cheers

I worked as a sortation associate for amazon for ~ 8 months and it was terrible. I worked on the dock unloading trucks the majority of the time and the managers would always tell us to ignore the safety rules to go faster. Alot of the guys that worked with me in the truck got hurt and we always had a ton of bruises. One time I sprained my wrist deflecting a large heavy box that was going to fall on my head and then got chewed out for breaking safety protocol by not using a ladder which we had never used before and I got written up. After 6 months only about 20 of the 200 that started with me were still working there. Extremely stressful job with a high turnover rate and the manager was always quick to remind us that we were all replaceable.

I think for the most part we’ve all gotten so accustomed to getting everything instantly that we have collectively forgotten that a.) the cost of that is overworked cheap labor and b.) it wasn’t always like this. Just like 15 years ago if you ordered something from a store or catalog or off the internet back then you waited a week or two at least before it arrived. A two week wait for something is unheard of today. But in order to get anything to you next day requires more people working on getting it to you. And to get it to you cheap you can’t pay those people too much

Because outrage is tempered by the wallet. They want luxury goods at market bearable prices but they also want the workers to make a livable wage. Fact is, if Americans got the good wages & benefits at the factory level....our iPhones would retail for $1800 - $2000 per phone. You know, it wasn’t but a short decade ago when most “Americans” thought their phones cost 1/2 of there value cuz they signed a 2 yr contract with a carrier. Oh, the righteous audacity some of them proudly had as they would break their phone a month later, get a used replacement.....and then call customer service demanding a manager because their replacement was “used.” I was one such escalation manager and I spent most of my time explaining simple economics and the reality of their entitlement to blue collar GED graduates & those with higher level degrees, alike. Heck, at least the GED-er’s had my sympathy....the ones with the higher education tended to prove day after day that book smart is not the same as life smart.

Europe is just as neoliberal as the U.S. The only difference is that Europe overall secured many more human right before the neoliberal period took charge and its very, very hard to get rid of progressive social programs. The U.S. and the U.K. have been trying to privatize social security and the NHS for decades but there so popular that its almost impossible. If the U.S. passed a nationalized healthcare system in the 40s-50s(before the peak of neoliberalism) then it would still have it today.

Free vending, weekly catered lunches, every month seemed to have some fun idea/program (ex: we got to wear full costumes, so long as they didn't impede our work, for Halloween). Then Amazon bought em out and I quit within a couple months. The pay from Zappos to Amazon didn't change and I was driving 45 mins each way so once they took away the fun, it wasn't worth it. I never pissed in a bottle or had to work 80 hours but I can sympathize. I've gone to those lengths with other jobs. However I know with just about any warehouse job you do work 60+ during peak seasons and certain days (Black Friday, Cyber Monday and others). If you call in or are late those days, you'll likely be fired.

Five minutes back. Eleven minutes. I spent less at the local shop, because I get paid $69.99/hr. The hour it took me to FINALLY locate the exact item I needed on Amazon, ended up costing more than the paltry ten dollar savings on the item. The Amazon item ended up costing nearly $84. That's not less expensive, that's MORE expensive? Not really sure why people think Amazon saves them money? Are they not calculating their time? The whole point of big corporations is their efficiency. Economies of scale is a thing. Your local supermarket is the cheapest place to get common goods, and online shopping is the cheapest/only place to get niche items. Small businesses don't necessarily treat workers better, they screw over workers just like the corporations, while doing it less efficiently. If you donated to a charity every time you shopped at a big corporation, 1) spending more money defeats the point of shopping there, and 2) the more you donate to charities the less mandatory treating each other decently becomes. We tend to donate more when the economy is good, but the people who need help need it precisely when the economy is shit. Ensuring rights are upheld and people get what they need is the whole point of having government.

This actually sounds like a great way to use tax money. Tax money from junk food companies should go towards fighting obesity. Tax money from cigarette companies should go towards lung cancer and cigarette addiction. I just looked at the 5p plastic bag tax. I can't see any mention of where the money goes. It's basically left to individual companies on how they spend the money, but is recommended that it goes towards "good causes". There doesn't seem to be any stipulation on using the money to fund tackling the issues that have caused the need for the tax to begin with. With the issue of plastic environmental pollution I think the money would be best going towards helping the environmental damage caused by plastic pollution, as opposed to say, finding their local sports club.

This makes for great scandal and fodder but as a former Amazonian who has worked for the Warehouse as a line worker, operations in Seattle in close contact with mid-level managers, and from home as a Teleworker.....I can honestly tell you that the truth is somewhere in the middle of the two extreme's. For some, at the very entry-level of Amazon, it can be a decent experience with moments of pure, unadulterated hell while, for others, people simply explain away the challenging moments as the cost of being apart of a large US corporation. I have seen great managers and I have seen detached taskmasters bent on breaking their employees while hiding behind internal policy. Your mileage as an Amazonian will vary from department to department and from team to team. But its not a clear-cut situation of unethical or immoral people exploiting desperate workers who can't afford to be unemployed. Amazon, on the whole, does have some questionable internal practices with regards to how they track time and manage schedules (and compel overtime); however, they give ALOT of time off (with the caveat that there are blackout periods when they will basically fire you if you take it). They have better benefits than most other US companies that only try to "appear" to provide benefits but then when you go to use them you basically discover they are non-existent in practice. Plus they allow for certain leave of absences that most simply do not have unless you use FMLA. The benefits for medical & dental immediately cover the employee from day one. Heck, they provide paid Paternity leave.....most US companies are still behind the curve on that trend. Most of the abusive situations within the company honestly stem from the competitive culture within the company that pits managers and employees against each other to compel ever higher outputs from the same set of resources; and this can result in some of what they characterize as emotional abuse....but honestly...efficiency has always been the anti-thesis of humanity and so they encourage people to use their time off internally: we used to call them "mental health days." Now am I making excuses for the abuses that DO HAPPEN internally: no, of course not. But I wanted to bring a more pragmatic, less mob-tastic perspective. For some, sure it was a hellish experience....for others it was one of the better employers they have ever had.....but for most, the real truth of the stressors of Amazon lie somewhere in the middle of those two realities. Amazon does take self-reflection seriously and is always tweaking their policies and benefits (and I have little doubt that this negative coverage is also being internally discussed for such changes as they can make. Anecdotally, the less flexible, more entitled (I'm looking at you Europeans) of a human being you are....the less of a cultural fit and more strife you bring to the existing culture of the company. But if you can be flexible and are pragmatic about who you are working for (and are willing to work harder than you probably ever have for any other employer outside of being prior military) then its really one of the better companies to be apart of. But Amazon isn't a one-size fits all employer and there will always be those who have negative experiences to share; just like any other company. There is rarely a purely evil company....just for-profit conglomerates with parts to improve on. That's my point.

Damn Tutin Perhaps....but if negativity wasn’t reported then abusive practices would flourish. What I typically take issue with these days with media coverage is the sensational style it’s being reported. I yearn for the yester year of reporting when you simply gave me the facts without someone’s baked in axe to grind. I shouldn’t have to wash off the seasoning of someone’s opinion from the meat and potatoes of the facts for every story....but I do...and it’s honestly sad.

+The End Begins, www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/technology/amazon-homeless-shelter-seattle.html Amazon is a Marketplace just like Uber, Lyft, AirBnB. why work if there are other companies that treat them well? Once we get self driving cars, all the UBER drivers will be jobless, why are we not looking at it. Netflix fires employees if they do not meet a single deadline. Apple's Steve Jobs is considered the worst Employer but success does not come with lying on their back and sipping coke. He talked about women with miscarriage had to travel the next day, why did she not resign on the same day and find another job. My point is, how credible are the news sources?

MossimoH2o Not saying he should, I just said that he could.. the reasons why I would, if I where him, is because i would be creating more customer's. The amount of people with increased stability will equal the amount of potential customers if not more. Lets say he ended homelessness and hunger just in the US, he'd make that money used back in less than a month of revenues, and those newly confidant able bodies will shop Amazon and so will many other around the world after hearing about the great deed. So he would remain the riches man living and he would literally save a large portion of the planet. He would be immortalized as the best man to ever live. You cant take the money with you when your dead, but his great would last for many generations.

Fernando alves you're right. He hasn't broken any laws. The idea that he hasn't forced people to work for him isn't exactly true though. If his employees had a better option would they put up with the conditions at Amazon? Amazon has undermined traditional businesses left and right. Cities that are hurting for employment compete for Amazon jobs even though they're crap. Bezos' crime is more of a moral crime. His income is at an absurd level. He could give a billion dollars worth of raises to his employees and it'd be a drop in the bucket. He could buy the best healthcare package possible for Amazon employees and still be the richest man in the world. It may not legally considered theft but it's still theft. He's a modern robber baron who'd be a villain in any Robin Hood type story. Just to put it in perspective my neighbor retired from Sears as a tire salesman. He has a comfortable middle class life. They go out to eat, he leases a new sports car every few years and goes on modest vacations. Could a retail worker or Amazon employee do that today? Companies used to treat their employees well.

Absolutely. Lots of people just take the jobs that are available to them. When you have rent to pay, food to buy, etc., it is hard to value morals over your paycheck. That's why I think government action is important. Limits on work hour weeks, requirements for maternity or in this case bereavement leave, etc. Corporations have disproportionate power over their employees and even consumers. That's why I think it is criminal that Amazon doesn't pay taxes. They have lots of advantages, and they should pay back to society through taxes.

That being said, my site has flaws and we're always seeming to be using hand-me-down equipment. I'm still waiting for the fans they promised to upgrade when we unload trucks, because it can easily reach 120 degrees in the trailers if they've been sitting out in the sun long enough, and the fans we have now aren't enough. It's a shame to hear all this other crap, thought we were above this.

This is about the most coherent point made on this subject. We should really have a fund that people give to that automatically entitles Amazon employees to said funds. This would at a bare minimum make their jobs much more lucrative and give them more bargaining power but ultimately I'm not sure if boycotting things like Amazon is feasible. I try to buy off of ebay so some nobody operating out of their home gets a few bucks, but of course the item comes via Amazon anyway.
@joeygreathouse3029

...why wouldn't boycotting Amazon be feasible? Why does everyone seem addicted to their high prices and totally nonexistent customer service?! Oh wait, Apple users exist. I suppose some people are just stupid, and will happily pay more for less, if it's trendy enough. Frankly our vendor beats Amazon on price, our business has never ordered off of Amazon before. Amazon overcharges for the items we sell, at least compared to our vendor we've been doing business with for over a decade. Not sure what you mean, the item comes via Amazon anyway?

Ideally, there's nothing wrong with less profit but realistically, it just won't work. Practically every companies' goals are profit and the easiest way to achieve it is through the unethical business practice. It's one of the many reasons that famous companies have factories in poorer countries (no or less tax, much lower worker wages, etc.). Correcting the unethical practice means that they need to give fair wages, improve work conditions and so on which will cost the companies money - to deal with financial loss, they need to increase the cost of products which will result in loss of customers which means losing money. It sounds harsh but almost no business companies will risk this (the goal of 99% of corporate companies is the profit, no matter what they may be saying to the public), hence the ethics issues. It's not fair nor right, but that's just how capitalism works.

Note to any tech savvy people: How about creating a competitor for Amazon that gives all of it's products a human rights rating. This way a buyer has a choice and the sales figures will be high enough to affect manufacturer's bottom line. Better yet, write your congress-critter and ask them why the US doesn't already have a foreign policy that positively and consistently links trade to human rights. With 2020 primaries coming up, it's the best time to get the candidate's opinions on this issue, on record. This can even be a way to really affect big oil producing nations, in a way never before imagined: Without billion dollar missiles!
