After having studied the excellent Fretboard Theory 1 and 2 books and video series, these song breakdowns are the perfect compliment and make it all worthwhile. Would love to see more of these as they really nail the usefulness of the theory. Thanks Desi

I’d pay for specific full solo breakdowns as it would be an easy way to marry technique and theory from a great teacher

Desi’s lessons are fantastic. He teaches you how to fish rather than giving you a fish. Highly recommend buying his GMT package and working through it slowly.

I've played guitar for over 50 years and currently play professionally in a Pink Floyd tribute band. I just want to say this video is a great harmonic analysis of the Comfortably Numb chord progression. I used to wonder why some non-diatonic (borrowed) chords sound good in a chord progression, while others sound terrible. Parallel keys (modal interchange) seems to be one reason - having a tonic chord common to both modes. Videos like these are very helpful to beginner and intermediate students who want to take a look under the hood and delve into a bit of theory. Nicely done, Desi!

D mixolydian means that the root note is D. On the C-G part the root note is obviously C. There's not even a D note in the melody. For me it's a clear case of modulation. Even the melody is exactly the same. So it would be D major and then modulates to C major.

Yes, that's certainly one way to think of it. However, overall the music begins and ends in the key signature of D major/B minor. If you view the sheet music, it doesn't notate a change to a new key signature. When I think about "why" the music moves to a C major chord, it makes sense when I think about the relationship to D mixolydian mode, modal interchange, borrowed chords, and so on. But we're splitting hairs here. We're just looking at the same thing from a different angle. ;)

Hey Desi - I'm a big fan. Your videos really are advanced for me, but I'm hanging in there. Great explanation about how the major and Mixolydian combine - that was completely new to me. So if I see (or hear) four major chords, this is one thing I will definitely look at. Question - does a "parallel" scale always mean major and Mixolydian, or can it be any two modes from the same scale? Question 2 - what are the most common examples of borrowed chords? Is this one of them? Finally, I love how you give the options for the solo scales to play over the progressions. One thing I never do is appargios, and not many major either. I will pay more attention to both of those.

Parallel scales can be anything. For example, D major and D Mixolydian, D major and D minor, and so on. The bVII (b7) chord is probably the most common borrowed chord, but there are many others. I give you tons of examples in Fretboard Theory Volume II Chapter 4. And finally, that 1st guitar solo uses arpeggios from the CAGED system (which is taught in Fretboard Theory 1 Chapter 3).

Thanks.I love your teaching. For the Dmajor to A, I was viewing it as the relative major of the B minor and the fifth chord (A major ).The remainder ( C etc ) as the G major key. Is this wrong or just another way to view it ? Thanks
@desisernaguitar
@desisernaguitar 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's fine in my book. 👍 You can also still think of it in D with C being a borrowed chord or modal interchange.

When it goes from C to G twice is it actually in G major for those four measures?
@desisernaguitar
@desisernaguitar 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're in the G scale at that point even though the D scale has a G chord.
