I have to tell you, man. As a long time comic reader and someone that enjoys the various forms of media adaptations, watching your journey deeper into this world has been such a fun and wholesome experience. Your enthusiasm really shows through the screen and the things you pick up on and questions you ask show your genuine interest. I'll keep watching your reactions to this stuff, the movies, tv series, etc as long as you keep posting the videos. I'm sure a lot of us here feel the same way. Great stuff

I'm in the same boat. Comic fandom these days (especially Spider-Man) is so cynical and jaded these days. Seeing someone discover the love for these characters and their stories, kind of makes me relive the experience of when I discovered it and reminds me why I really do love them. It's such a great feeling amidst all the negativity and cynicism you see about comics online nowadays.

The grace of Spider-Man is that although he is a "failure" and makes mistakes, he always recovers and more importantly, he recognizes his mistakes, learns from them and improves so as not to make them again, unfortunately the current writer did not understand that and just stayed with the part about "he's a failure like all of us" and is making Peter make the same mistakes he did as a teenager, only now Peter is 30 years old

Kind of the issue with comics is main characters like this don't stay dead for long. You might have them killed and have a new character fill in but they always come back so these deaths don't really hit very hard when it's happening constantly.

Spider-Man's timeline split in the 1970s when Spanish versions printed in Mexico disagreed with a Marvel decision. Gwen Stacy was more popular in Mexico than she was in the US. When she died in the main continuity, the Mexican publisher said screw that, and just created their own Spider-Man stories with Gwen still alive. There is a cover where Peter and Gwen get married, but I don't know if it actually took place in the story. I'd like to see you do this type of video for Fantastic Four and Superman as well.

Spiderman has had a long rich history and is perhaps one of the most iconic and well known superheroes in media. Spiderman truly is the definition of a relatable hero and Marvels greatest character and one of the best superheroes. Sadly Spiderman is a character that truly cannot escape tragedy that it's practically become a multiversal canon event or at least cannot escape writers that love to make him suffer

46:14 No no. It did not originally come from the comics. The movie came out before Peter had that ability in the comics (and thankfully it didn't last anyway). The only reason they did that in the comments was so audiences would be more familiar with the movies but thankfully they realised that it was completely unnecessary and did away with the organic webs.

Flash Thompson in The Amazing Spiderman (2012) is my personal favourite version of Flash Thompson from the live action movies as he actually goes through a small character arc and they showcase how hes more than just a typical bully. @@blaze3309 I don't blame you really. Like, Flash is in most of the films, but they barely adapt him, and most of the time he's just a generic background character with little screentime. Which sucks, because he has such a good arc in the comics. The only adaptations that captures his appeal perfectly is The Spectacular Spider-Man, which aside from just being an amazing show and the best on-screen Spider-Man ever, also has the best Flash outside the comics, so you should absolutely check it out when you can.

One little nitpick I have, and this may sound like gate-keeping but I promise it isn’t, is people who react to these saying they’re about to “get into comics.” And it’s like, no, you’re getting into a video about comics. Like if I was going to get into Star Wars I wouldn’t just watch a review of A New Hope and say “Yep, just got into Star Wars.” It feels a bit disrespectful to the medium if you think you can just have it summarized to you and feel like you know all about it after. And I’m not trying to be a dick, I realize that comics aren’t for everyone, and that’s fine, but there’s a pretty long history of people thinking that comics matter so little that they can just read the Wiki or watch a summary and feel like they’ve actually read it. People view comics as nothing more than the storyboards for movies (mediums of “true art.”) to use as the basis for their plots.

I was fortunate to get hold of most of the early comics in the late sixties. At one stage I had issues 2-40. Never No 1. Regrettably I unloaded them for what seemed like a good price about 1979. If I had kept them, even without No 1 I would be having a very comfortable retirement!. I remember the stories and villains so well. I had tons of DC comics too but these were far and away the best - the human side of Peter was so relatable.

45:16 Actually that has completely been left in the past and he has had a mechanical web shooters for years again (as he should always have and it should never be organic webs).
@MaigenMaylight
@MaigenMaylight 2 ай бұрын
Which is silly to me. Spider-Man can cling to walls/ceilings, possesses super strength, and even has an additional sense from his powers. But organic webs? That's too much. He's *Spider-Man* - organic webs should be part of his abilities. And if him having organic webs is such an issue, you might as well make his wallcrawling and spidey-sense tech-based too.
@The_Phantasm
@The_Phantasm 2 ай бұрын
@@MaigenMaylight As a lifelong Spider-Man comic book fan, here's the problem with the organic webs debate: Spider-Man's web-shooters are such an incredibly vital and essential part of who he is. They reinforce Peter's incredible intellect and showcase his inner scientist. Sure, he gained incredible power thanks to the spider bite, but he also worked for his abilities, something which the Tobey Maguire version of Spider-Man absolutely did NOT do whatsoever. The web-shooters also provide a beloved story element to the character by having the vulnerability during times when they would get damaged or run out of web fluid, et cetera. It is a crucial part of the character that people love. These scenarios create tension in the story and it's always fun once in a while to see Peter out of his comfort zone trying to suddenly think on his feet and be a little more creative because he's out of webs and is a staple of the character.
@MaigenMaylight
@MaigenMaylight 2 ай бұрын
@@The_Phantasm I get what you're saying, but on that note, wouldn't it be better if the rest of his abilities (save for his super strength) also be tech-based as well? It'd amplify readers/watchers to his brilliant mind even more, and create more opportunities for tension instead of just having the webshooters expire as some convenient excuse for said tension.

Surprisingly, you can easily be introduced to the larger Marvel Universe solely from Spidey comics because of how frequently other characters make guest appearances, most notably the Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, and Daredevil, who all become inseparable from Spider-Man's mythos at some point.

What I like is that Spider-man is the hero that iteracts with wider Marvel Universe the most. An Avenger, great friend of Fanatastic Four, can find relatability with the X-men and etc. Speaking of Fantastic Four and X-men, I do advise to watch the movies. And when X-men have only 3 bad movies, one of which sadl you cannot skip, Fantastic Four wasn't this lucky. The movie you said you watched can be a mess and boring, but it's sorta good movie that explores who these characters are and how they relate to each other. So just to familiarize with the team (which was actually the first superhero team that Stan Lee created), I do advise to watch the first movie from 2000s. As for F4 (short name for Fantastic Four) reboot that's most modern, is even worse than the older ones. And while it also focuses on how the team is created, it takes the origins of it from Ultimate series, which is quite different from canon one. Oh and just so ou'd know, Doctor Doom is initially the Fantastic Four villain and I don't like how people want to tear him out of that connection. Which is thankfully is only the wishes from people on internet. And coming back to the X-men, if you didnt watched the movies of them yet, I surely advise you to. Mostly because of Hugh jackamn as Wolverine and that current chronology of that franchise sorta end on both "Logan" and Deadpool movies with the third one going to be first X-men movie under Marvel Cinematic Universe and also the first 18+ movie in the same universe AND DIsney. So... your choice.

I don't get why people are flabbergasted that a character who's been around for 60 years have so many iterations of said character. From the 60's,70's, 80's 90's and 2000's the way people dress,talk,worldviews, technology and interactions have change why is it so surprising thst different era's have different takes.we need to stop looking through the past with 2024 lenses and judging things in the past that doesn't have the framework that we're used to these days.

It’s fine that Peter messes up, but it’s been going on for too long, more recently that had him and MJ break up AGAIN and she’s with a nobody named Paul, people want to see him win and have a family.

Nothing is to be honest. Like, some of the cartoons were okay (90's one and World's Greatest Heroes weren't half bad). But no adaptation has ever captured what makes the Fantastic Four so awesome in the comics. Shit sucks. Fingers crossed the MCU one is decent.

MJ was always portrayed as strong willed. It's actually the crappy portrayal in the Tobey Miguire films that only show her as someone who needs rescued. No fault to the actress she was just given absolutely nothing to work with.

Garfield’s looks never bothered me honestly, it was the fact that his Peter was a cool edgy skateboarding brooding teenage instead of the nerdy wimp he’s suppose to be. Peter Parker in the garfield movies makes sarcastic witty remarks just like when he when he puts on the mask. The point of Peter being a wimpy nerd is that there no way a nerdy dork like Peter Parker could ever be the brave wise cracking friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Not a diss on Andrew Garfield just stating my point. He was a great Spider-Man but he isn’t the best PETER PARKER

Peter wasn’t a wimpy nerd he was the exact opposite especially when he got powers he got a boost in confidence and even started fights with flash on multiple occasions. And brooding teenager and “nerdy wimp” aren’t mutually exclusive also Peter had a motorcycle in the comics so him riding a skateboard (which is the opposite of cool) isn’t that bad

1:28:50 It's not the fact that Miles would be the main Spider-Man that bothers me. He's cool. But the problems I have with these "woke" additions, which there are, is that they are always so forced, leading them to feel cheap and less like a good story. Miles earned his spot as Spider-Man because he's awesome, not because of the color of his skin. But the issue with that is the fact that they keep addressing it, over and over, that the color of his skin matters for some reason, therefore defeating the whole purpose. I don't care what color he is, just write him well and he'll be loved. Saying "you're oppressed because you look different" while he's living his best life doesn't really make much sense. Many, and probably most, modern writers don't seem to get that very well.
