Part of being a professional on a message board (or any other online forum) is to always take the high road and be polite. If an artist/writer/editor can't do that, they shouldn't be participating in online discussions in their official role. If a comment or question is out of line, just delete it, ignore it, or tell the poster that you will answer if they ask it in a more polite way.

that is incorrect. the professional should never do anything that breaches their contract. if the contract doesn't limit their behavior (most don't and can't) they are under no more obligation to 'take the high road' than any fan who chooses to go low.

There's a difference between "hardball" questions and "attacks." Most of the ignored questions fall into the second category. They're usually (not always) thinly veiled insults or traps. There's absolutely no upside for any creator to engage with that. I always find the double standards of fan interactions interesting. Someone will leave a disparaging or nasty comment and then get angry if the creator responds in kind. It's like smacking someone over the head and then getting upset because they have the audacity to hit you back. Especially with the defense of, "They should be professional!" And, to be clear, I am well aware that some modern creators are terrible people who spew disgusting and hateful things. I'm sure there's older creators that do that to. So I'm not saying that every creator should be treated with respect. Really, marketing AMAs are just that: marketing. No creator is going to veer too far from trying to sell their book and shining a good light on their employer. Most of them have also gotten pretty good at telling the difference between a genuine inquiry and hostile baiting.

When's the last time you felt like a comics company was meaningfully marketing to you? Grahted, technology has changed things. Still, there needs to be a level of kayfabe where the audience *thinks* the company is interacting with them when it really isn't. Lettercolumns and Bullpen Bulletins used to do that. What's left?
@drewtheunspoken3988
@drewtheunspoken3988 27 күн бұрын
Did you know Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four still have letter columns? They're usually "puff" letters but I still read them. It seemed like social media was going to bridge that gap, but the interactions make it impossible for that to be the answer. And, to be honest, the publishers don't really seem to care that much about fan engagement any longer. I'm guessing because the fans they want aren't the ones willing to engage.

The current Incredible Hulk run has a letter column as well. I don't read it. I think the font throws me. IIRC, the Star Wars books don't have lettercols, which says nothing good about how they're doing. (September is three months away, rubs hands together.)

They need to start publishing another comic book magazine! They should make a cheap comic magazine like based off of WIZARD magazine and put it out there! It makes absolutely no sense why they don’t! They should sell them for 5 bucks at every major comic book convention like NYCC or SDCC! I think that would be great for spreading the word about comics!

leagueofcomicgeeks has a creator "ask me anything" AMA thread sometimes, similar to the comic book reddit has a creator AMA post. I recall Mirka Andolfo did one, and I asked a question, and she replied, and that was cool. I don't even read her books lol, but I see her covers every now and then. Mark Waid did one recently, and that was pretty popular. There was 1 question that asked him if he'd ever go to the Energon Universe, and THANK GOD he replied saying he doesn't know the TF very well since he didn't grow up with them so he has no interest in writing for the EU. I finally read the first 2 trades of World's Finest from my local library, and while it's solid, I think it was over-praised. I like DWJ's Transformers more. So it's like, man, this is what was the top selling, top reviewed comic, and that's it? Was it really this simple? Why don't more creators just write comics like this? Or rather, why doesn't DC demand their writers to write more like World's Finest?

@@drewtheunspoken3988TCJ may be the last remaining traditional long-form comics site left. Even then, there's a noticeable political slant there and occasionally a review turns into a weird rant. I'd like to see someone do a serious post-mortem on comics journalism.

@@adamfrey4920 if I has a better grasp of journalism and media theory I would love to do it. I maintain that most modern media "journalism" is really thinly veiled OP-EDs. Or marketing fluff pieces curated for advertising revenue.

I treat such threads less like marketing and more like rumor control. there are a lot of blowhards in the comics critique-o-sphere who make loud pronouncements, usually with a negative spin, in order to get clicks. close to 100% of these negative takes and attacks are based on zero actual info and are nearly never made in good faith. it's not a bad idea to create a space where people can hear what's up from the horse's mouth, rather than through some based filter.

I never understood the appeal of wanting to interact with creators simply because they're creators. Unless you're trying to get a job or because you're in comics news , but in any case it seems artificial

I was at Target, waffling on whether to buy a clearance copy of Star Wars The Clone Wars Pandemic that's on the shelf. I opted not to. I'm also hunting around for some Marvel Legends. Should have grabbed the new Iron Man figures when I saw them, because they're gone now.

I listened to some of it, and they both started off answering the questions, but then maybe midway through, they stopped answering the questions and they devolved into squabbling how they were better than the other, or how the other was worse than them. It was so weird. I was vaguely aware they didn't properly address questions in the past, but I didn't realize how poorly they addressed the issues given by the moderator.
So what is a comic book franchise?
