In this video, I will talk about Absorene and why I don't like to use it.
I will also show you how well it works so it is a personal preference.
Link to absorene on Amazon if you need to find a place to buy it

A very helpful video! I've been working the Absorene into a tube and rolling it over the surface of the book. It works, but your method looks very effective. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!

Nick, I’m so glad that you finally showed this product. I never use Absorene for whites, but I do use it exclusively for yellows and light colors that get dirty like light blues and greens. Works phenomenally.

I roll it out like a worm and roll it across the entire book from spine to edge. I don't necessarily use it like an eraser. I find it helps pick stuff up off the book. I think we have to have all the available options ((smoke sponge, erasers, absorene, etc.)) great video for the new people

i use the absorene on comic books however, absorene putty is not always my choice because the absorene sponge may show better results........and then other times the putty shows better results over the sponge. All books are conditional👍....and then sometimes on whites i may use a kneaded eraser

Lesson I learned early on was leaving a ring on my cleaning hand. I rolled my hand across the cover using a kleenexe and I barely rolled the ring on the cover and it put a line across the whole cover. Another thing I've noticed is if you put a comic in a nice Mylar bag and angle it you can really see all the defects. Especially finger dents that CGC really gets you hard on.

How about Lineco Archival cleaning pads? (thanks for your videos) Been sending in comics for grading, mostly CGC, CBCS once and awhile, and aside from being obviously subjective from time to time, getting ridiculously strict. Books sold as 9.0- 9.2 raw, getting 8.5's , bought a press and willing to try and get back some hard earned money. Especially for the time it takes for the grading turnaround, infuriating!

Cool. I had some tobacco in my mouth and a bit of spittle got on the edges of the pages when I was talking....it's not awful but I really don't want it there as it's a rare Bible facsimile, would this work for things like that? It seems so, but wanted to double check. Looks like it does an amazing job on the comic book.

interesting! i use absorbene but in a totally different way. i find that if i sort of roll and knead it into the book over a really grimey area it lifts up some of the stain or grime. i will try it out this way on some colored parts. like you, i also prefer the eraser on the white parts. good vid, thx!

DS I cleaned a Spirit #3 front and back with it. Cleaned up really pretty. When you use it in the “eraser” fashion, very gently with no pressure, it will bead off the grime and just sweep it away. Great for Golden Age books.

I know it highly depends on whether or not a clean like this really matters on most books, but what would you say is a key factor in deciding to break out the cleaning materials? (i.e. a book that appears high grade apart from a clean, a low grade book where it will have a significant eye appeal bump, etc.) At least in your own opinion. Less so what is best practice and more so your own mindset when cleaning.
@etanick1
@etanick1 4 жыл бұрын
key factor is whether the grade can be improved with the cleaning. A lot of time, it is the pressing that is needed and the cleaning is just to make it look "nicer" with very little impact on the grade. Most of the raw books I auctioned off on my channel in the past year have not been cleaned because the efforts won't matter much...the eye appeal will be better but I will let the new owners deal with that if they are OCD on clean books....I have better things to do with my time :)

Nick, when it comes to slabbed silver and bronze age books, at what grade level would you consider the beginning of high grade books? And is it different from silver to bronze age? Might sound like an odd question, but just wanted to know your opinion on the subject. Thanks.

@tonymiles273 4 жыл бұрын
@@etanick1 8.5 seems to be my sweet spot. Nice enough to present really well but still affordable. Some one told me once to shoot for 9.0 or better to stay "liquid" in my collection. On bigger keys 8.0 is fine to me. On non key bronze I like 9.4. Thanks again for the reply,y Nick, you've dealt with so many books that I really value your opinion.
@etanick1
@etanick1 4 жыл бұрын
just because I say something is high grade...it means NOTHING about liquidity. I already said it on my channel many times...this is not a liquid asset. If you want to sell anything quick, unless it is a hot book, be prepare to discount.....and if you have to sell anything below FMV to get cash quick, it is not liquid. 9.4 non key bronze...liquid? not and you can tell that someone that is my opinion and he can call me an idiot if he wishes...LOL

ETA Nick no worries Nick. I was really just wondering what others consider the starting point for high grade on silver and bronze slabs, and I consider you a good resource as you've dealt so much in graded books. For me, right now, it's more about the joy of collecting. If and when I do sell the PC down the road it will be more of a supplement to my income while continuing to set up at comic shows and still enjoying this hobby I love. And in the event that something were to happen to me before then I already have in place who will get the various parts of my collection . I only view you with respect and that's why I value your opinion and enjoy your videos.

not the answer you want to hear.."depends" I don't clean every book in my collection even if it will improve the grade...I am just showing people how to do it. some books will get better grade, some books won't. If you know how to grade, you will understand that cleanliness the least part of a downgrade on a book. Others may disagree with me but there is a reason I don't bother to clean every books. Just look at my auctions right now...nothing there has been cleaned...why bother.
