Having to take a break from jiu jitsu isn't something we think about when we first start training, but for many of us, it's just part of our individual journey. Coming back can be another challenge in itself, so let's chat about some ways that can help you if you're going through this!

So glad you're back to making videos and back to Jiu Jitsu! You've been through it, for sure. Would you consider doing a competition prep video? Like the specific type of training you or those you know generally did when leading up to one? I'm out in the literal middle of nowhere and am having to figure out how to comp prep without a traditional gym (we have an all volunteer club and everyone works weird schedules).

Oh wow yeah, that's tough when every one works different schedules. I have a few competition videos - one talking about meal prep that I posted a little over a year ago and another one I did about 2 years ago talking about preparing for your first competition! I'd definitely like to do an updated one, but probably not any time soon since I've been out of the competition scene for a little while now hehe. If you have any specific questions, feel free to DM me on instagram! @kimberlyannkinch

Thank you for sharing your journey. I wish I had come across these videos a few months ago, as I had torn my meniscus (bucket handle tear) in late February of 2023. The way I got injured resembles much to the experience you had, as I too, was looking to chase someone's back (a white belt), and my leg got caught and twisted along the way. It was such a devastating experience for me, as it forced me to put my entire life on hold for four months after surgery, and it's been a healing journey since. I've only just gotten back to the gym after a total of nine months of being away, but I can relate to the fears that come with returning/rolling after experiencing a traumatic experience like ours. While I’ve been back at the gym for about a month and a half now, I’m still finding my way. There are some instances where I feel like I need to slow down and be cautious (for the sake of prevention, of course), and that can be frustrating at times. Especially when you know you were at a certain point before surgery and now you’re just getting smashed left and right. It can be discouraging at times, but I do appreciate you shedding light on this matter and the feelings/concerns that come along with it. From what I’ve seen on this platform for the most part, are men who sugarcoat the experience and try their hardest to seem “strong” and “fearless” by coming back to the gym on their second month, as opposed to the six-seventh month as recommended by their doctor. It’s nice to see that someone else, especially as a woman, shares a similar experience that validates the feelings that normally get shrugged off because “it could have been far worse” or because people haven’t experienced what we have, so it’s taken with a grain of salt. Luckily, I have a few girls that I know I can trust to roll safely with, and have been catching up from where I left off, day by day. I look forward to hearing about your journey further down the line. Hopefully, by then, we’ll be even better than ever :D

Hi! The whole injury, surgery and recovery process is SO tough. For me, the injury was so traumatic that surgery was a breeze lol! Aside from the physical recovery, mentally it's really tough too. Once I started hitting the 8-9 month mark, I felt that internal pressure of coming back to training, especially when people couldn't believe that I had been out that long already. Idk, that was probably just pressure I was putting on myself. But I feel like injuries aren't really taken seriously in jiu jitsu and every one just wants to get back to training without taking care of their body - and, no one truly understands what you're going through in those moments. Happy to hear that you have a few girls to train with that you feel comfortable with and that you're getting back out there! :)

I think I injured my MCL early October(1.5 months ago).. thinking about going back this week for maybe technique only or flow rolling with a trusted partner. Going to be stressful dealing with leg entanglements and even guard retention 🥲

I hear you! I'd probably try just drilling the technique first and see how you feel :)

I’ve been thinking I need to take a month or two off. Been training for over a year and feeling burnt out and in need of a break. Plus I want to use the money from my membership to save up for a trip but I’m worried I will loose a lot of what I have learned 🫠

@marystein8335 You won't feel as sharp maybe, but I'm sure you'll be just fine! I have started/stopped bjj many times over the last decade and I don't feel like I've lost too much skill wise 😊, only time potentially training.
