Explore the revolutions that define our era and their lessons for our polarized world with CNN host and bestselling author Fareed Zakaria. In this enlightening discussion, Zakaria delves into the past to shed light on the present, examining how revolutions in the 17th-century Netherlands, the French Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution have shaped modern politics and economics.
Drawing from his new book, "Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present," Zakaria explores how present-day revolutions in globalization, technology, identity, and geopolitics are reshaping our world. Despite the disruptions and anxieties these revolutions have caused, Zakaria offers a hopeful outlook, suggesting that wise action can revive the liberal international order and relegate populism to history's dustbin.
Don't miss this insightful conversation that combines intellectual range, historical insight, and a vision for a better future, as Zakaria reframes our understanding of the turbulent times we live in.

Both Mustafa and Fareed are gems in their respective fields and this should speak volumes about the importance of immigrants. Looking at the immigrants as the “other” isn’t gonna to be good for the West at a time of global challenges and rise of China

I agree with U , but there are many other issues with illegal immigrants, refugees and the legal immigrants ( assimilation problems ).. Particularly with these refugees and illegal immigrants from Middle East, who keeps their religion and culture more than the national interests of countries where they are residing. They are so adamant and orthodox towards liberal values in free societies. A middle path of rational thinking with sense and logic must be adopted. It might be a slow transition but it shall happen to avoid destruction and suffering of society’s.

The video link featuring Fareed Zakaria and Mustafa Suleyman provides insightful perspectives on AI and societal changes. However, it misses a crucial discussion on sustainability. Sustainability is an integral aspect of technological advancements, including AI. The absence of this topic in the video leaves the conversation incomplete. To enhance the comprehensiveness and relevance of the content, it is recommended to incorporate a segment discussing the environmental impact of AI technologies. This could include strategies for sustainable AI development, the energy consumption of AI systems, and how AI can contribute to sustainability solutions. This addition would provide a more holistic view of AI's role in the age of technological revolutions. .

Interesting topic... revolutions... social, political, and technological. There is a danger of prognosticating based on historical perceptions. We tend to read history with less than '20/20 vision.' We end up as one-eyed prophets when applying the same perspective looking ahead. Hindsight bias and overconfidence... are the peril of ideology.

There are reactionaries, true, but on the ground many just want to politely decline to adopt some of the changes which oppose their religion, culture, or in general their world view. It is undeniable that some of the changes in modern times have rightly corrected many undue violations against woman. However, the charges in the family structure have created at least some stress within the society. Can the higher rate of divorce in liberal societies compared to more traditional societies be an indicator? The pyramid family structure has been there for a long time. Some would argue that it served its purpose well to maintain the society in time when feudal or otherwise structures were too weak to provide many needed services. This obviously was at the expense of supression of woman's rights and in many cases oppression of them. Still a case for maintaining the pyramid structure, even in the context of the charged family structure, can be seen based on the argument that the critical role of a woman as a mother would constraint her to realize some of her abilities whereas a man would have less such. This sacrifice isn't artificial. Woman have done this throughout history, it is nature to them.

A great discussion Some small, but perhaps not minor issues. Trump’s corporation had / has many women executives and managers- maybe more than men. He is not interested in going back to the 1950s, perhaps the later 1980s through the pre-global economy era of job and manufacturing outsourcing - that more or less exploded in 2001. And back to a time before the Carter Administration caused birth of an Iran that later became a radical Muslim and imperialist nation. Like politicians on both sides, Trump has not learned how - at the nation-state level, to successfully compete economically with China - a country not involved in foreign military adventures.

My ears perked and I thought about it. My Ancestor was English and he fought the English in the Revolutionary War. I know his rank, I know the land grant he was awarded. Really impressive. Fareed is wrong. It was not a rebellion against one king. Let's go back to the start of the Church of England. It's just one example.

I have much respect for Fareed, however the way he spoke about current abortion laws seemed a bit off. It seemed he was implying there were no current limits and if we would just make a Federal limit of 15 weeks then we could “move on” past this. Well I’m pretty sure that most states had some limits such as he suggested and it didn’t stop the conservatives. I believe they will not accept such a limit even if it is a federal law. They want no abortion. No abortion, no way, no how.

The role of Netherland in modern capitalism is still ignored, especially the essential role of New York as a Dutch colony before its surrender to British ships in 1664! The other untold story is the history of the Dutch colonists in South Africa besides the apartheid and race relations. And the rise of Swedish far-right conservatism was due to the enormous level of crime in the descendents of immigrants from Africa and Middle East, not globalisation.

At 19.12 Fareed is wrong. This is the second time I've heard him use this line. When US based commentators refer to developed overseas countries they mean Europe, the UK and Japan. Aust and NZ are rich countries with high immigration and similar demographic age structure to the USA and do not resemble Florida.

While I agree that a “revolution” requires a restructuring our socio-economic and political system, I don’t believe the driver of the revolution is cultural. The root cause of the cultural malaise on the right is that the US no longer has “infinite” natural resources built on extractive industries. Though the right wing extremists may not realize it, I wouldn’t matter if the US turned into Gilead, where white men are large and in charge. They would still face the fact that we shite in our nest. Until we clean that up and create a regenerative economy, that malaise is going to continue.

YA KNOW? October 21, 2023 Remember when people used to intersperse their sentences with ‘like’ as in you know like that, ‘like’ I went to the store and ‘like’ there was no bread and then I went ‘like’ to the gas station and gas was so expensive ‘like’ too much you know? Well somehow ‘like’ his retreated into the past, and faded into obscurity, fallen to disuse. It has been replaced by a new word or two words. Those two words are ‘you know’. A great plethora of speakers use this lazy phrase to assume that the person they are, speaking to somehow, mysteriously intuits, unfathomably groks the meaning. grasps their content, intent, and thrust. Presenters of every dimension, comedians, talk show hosts, guests, podcast people all this ilk use this same crutch ‘you know’ this and ‘you know’ that. I propose that the next time you hear someone say ‘you know’ that you reply, “No I don’t know, I don’t understand, please embellish, kindly explain please clarify exactly what you were trying to tell me. I am not a mind reader and the words you speak don’t necessarily lead me to the correct conclusion that I have fully grasped what you’re trying to convey. Understand? Capeesh?, Comprendo? My goodness even that extremely eloquent Rachel Maddow says ‘you know’. To accompany her there is Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers. They presumptively, confidently, assuredly assume that ‘you know’ will accomplish the understanding or the completion of their sentence. It won’t. So, all you a great speaker of the world, renounce delete, discontinue this lazy phrase! And, furthermore, it is anyway, not anyways!!!
