Shout out to MaoMao's friend in the Rear Palace who always has the latest info on what's going on. She's lowkey been key to progressing the story in a lot of these episodes.

I agree she is cute and sweet. She and Maomao have a great friendship I hope we see more of her as well as wishing her the best. It’s rough being uneducated and such low status. I am glad she avoided the cruel firing the other 80 girls got. I hope they got some kind of compensation and even were helped to make a soft landing outside of the rear palace. It is sad that mere familiar and/or business association can result in punishment. It emphasizes the status issues of this society and its expectation on the power of family ties.

@@gprovidakesYaolan was then name of her friend in the laundry department. I will miss her, hopefully will see her again after she returns to the palace. The 80 girls who got laid off could have been worse. Chinese dynasties also have a punishment involving execution of whole family and EVERYONE associated with that family. At least in this case, they just fired them.

So true to the character that despite going there in a panic, she was unable to bring herself to speak openly to him and actually ask to stay initially. She went about it in such a roundabout way that he couldn't interpret it correctly.

@@juliejaropillo7079 Yes, but at the same time she is strongly unaware (or wilfully ignorant) of just how much connections and power she actually has while everyone around her worth the salt is quite concious of it or quickly learns of it. I mean, she has approval and affection of Jinshi, Emperor, all the consorts, eunuchs, she is lady-in-waiting of one consort that has strong basis of becoming Empress herself, and is also that entire rear palace's doctor and investigator in anything but name. All those people also trust her and her skills. People around Maomao quickly learn that even though her official position may be quite low she is a valuable and prized support in the shadow to the big fishes of their country or even, hell, slight spoiler potential royalty herself

@@Aurilion44 yes, she has a lot of connection but she does not really have the power on her current position as she is just a servant and she knows that, that is why her negotiation is just of a mere servant with the cooking, cleaning and food taster. She knows were she stands and she also had that speech in the episode 8?(not sure about the episode) with i am a mere servant and you are noble, which is one of the reason why Jinshi can't also decide. And we can see here, when they are not already in the rear palace but as a noble and a courtesan, maomao can already voice it out that she wanted to stay.

remember as much as jinshi likes her and maomao wants to be in the rear palace everything must be done by the books cross all dot cause if they try and be sneaky and get away with it it will def comeback to bite em in the ass like it did to feming. and it would ruin not just maomao but jinshi her lady her friend in the servant girl and just like it happened they all will be executed all by some other op trying to move up the ladder and will use any dirt to do so.

@Aurilion44 Maomao isn't anything more than we see. Her biological parents are alive and she knows who they are. Her mother was a courtesan and her father is a military officer that was one of her regular customers.

I love that Gaoshun is the only one who calls Maomao "Xiaomao" which means "little Mao" or kitten lol. To be fair, Maomao doesn't really look like a 17 yr old girl lol so seeing her drinking is funny. This episode had a great flashback montage (rare to say that) to end part 1 as it fit in with her thoughts of the rear palace.

I'm just glad they didn't do the whole Execute to 10 degrees of familiies thing with Lady Fengming, otherwise Jinshi really would have to have Maomao executed. One of the worst punishments in Chinese history, killing a person's whole family, extended family and anyone remotely connected to them. Though guess back in the McCarthy era, this was in a way done as well, just through blacklisting and humiliation for anyone who remotely sympathizes with suspected or actual communist. Damn the traders who kidnapped Maomao. It's a miracle Maomao survived as she did every second she was in the rear palace, although thanks to her wit, charm but mostly luck, it turned out relatively well for her, leaving the rear palace with most of her freedom except the amount she has to pay back the brothel for engaging Pairin for Lihaku.

Maomao should have spoken out more what she wanted in my opinion. For what was at stake that she would have to work as a courtesan i think she should have been clearer with Jinshi. He directly asked her what SHE wants. But on the other hand i love how our hero Gaoshun stepped in, resolved the situation and spoke with Lihaku to get information about the Vigridis House and Maomao to get Jinshi and Maomao back together. I think Gaoshun realized she is not a toy for Jinshi, but he really likes her.

Its definitely her biggest failing, she so often deminishes her own standing to what it really is and then holds back, not rralising that in reality, if she asked for it, she could get her own palace with all the drugs, poisons and materials she could ever want.

Well the thing is, Jinshi knows that Maomao holds status in high regard even when it involves him, hence why he thought of the poisoning execution scene. Which is how he knew that she would never directly ask for something so it was futile to literally ask her what she wants. I think her saying she was kidnapped and sold to the rear palace made Jinshi's decision for him. He needs to be more direct with what he wants when dealing with her lol rather than trying to resolve things behind the scenes because he should know she's not going to come out and say it to him. Forreal though, Gaoshun resolved that rather quickly. Before the "yet" lol.

Functionally she's kind of untouchable since doing so would mean getting on the wrong side of 2/3 of the concubines (not counting lishu cause she realistically she has less power than Maomao), the head manager of the palace, potentially even the emporer who's already shown tacit if not explicit support. Officially, she's a poison taster which puts her slightly below that of the other ladies in waiting, but it's not exactly an unknown to the majority of the palace that she is functionally the palace doctor.

I get Mao Mao being like "I never said that" cause she technically never did lol, but she unknowingly hit Jinshi's trigger words of "If it's an order" and he just closed his mind off after that, thinking he would be forcing her to be at the rear palace. Literal misunderstanding on both parts😂

Guys, now that Jinshi bought her, Maomao is literally his woman.. He can elevate her as his concubine or even his wife if he wants it. But our boy is quite respectul and mindful of what Maomao's wants, so she was back into a lady-in-waiting/maid to Jinshi for now, though everyone but her realize the true meaning of 'he bought her' for Jinshi... 🤭🤭🤭

Actually, historically, euneuch there can have a wife and bunch of concubines too, especially if he was the high ranked euneuch or the euneuchs favored by the Emperor, Empress and high ranked concubines.. Their master could arranged his marriage to the women they like.. Yes they couldn't do the real 'deed', but at that time obidience was everything.. The favored euneuch took the married favor as a blessing bestowed by his master and the women.. (usually maid in rear palace) should saw this as a blessing too... 😅😅😅

@@dygoldenflower1129 Forgot about that, even after being a Eunuch, they could still start a family or clan by themselves, even without able to make their own, they could simply adopt someone as their heir, or alternatively elevate someone ELSE in their family who still had the working parts as their heir. But I think by now, we all suspect that he may not even be a eunuch. And knowing Jinshi, even if he is her legal owner, he would probably arrange someway for Maomao to officially work wherever she wants in the rear palace, probably back to Gyokuyou. Personally, I would like her to go serve Lishu to straighten out her ladies in waiting, but perhaps Lishu will be alright with at least one lady in waiting (the food tester) being serious about her job now. Sigh, hope we get some light hearted mysteries similar to Concubine Fuyou. After the Ah Duo arc, I realize I have a distaste for mysteries regarding infanticide.

Who got Lihaku to gather the young guests, arrange for a venue, paid for three princesses, …. Hmmmm Gaoshun. Who is Gaoshun - he more than merely a Jinshi aide. He is high ranked, Maomao thought he might not be a Eunuch (Fuyou Episode), he is seated very close to the Emperor at Garden Party, and been “raising” the Emperor’s son. Recall the sword fight scene with Gaoshun in attendance and Jinshi’s complement about inherit clan strength. The story is full of hints about everyone’s backstory. Next season will be so much fun.

Yep, Gaoshun is apparently much older than he looks, I thought he was just a few years older but apparently he raised Jinshi for part of his childhood (refer to episode showing a young Jinshi crying over toys), so perhaps Gaoshun is twice Jinshi's age. Could still be as young as 32 years old assuming Jinshi is 16 years old. Most likely is a proper Eunuch as well. Eunuchs despite their status, also can accumulate a lot of wealth and power, enough to engage the glamourous 3 Princesses and arrange the whole buyout, assuming he doesn't take it out of Jinshi's pocket. Some of the most famous and infamous eunuchs supposedly had fortunes bigger than the imperial budget. Though Gaoshun doesn't look like the hoarding wealth type, still possible. Next season or episode looks to be fun, but I hope will get some lighthearted moments. After this small arc concerning Concubine Ah Duo, I could use some light heartedness preferably with no dead bodies. Just my personal wish, more likely we get more mysteries with dead bodies.

Yeah I agree. While many of Maomao’s “guesses” are right she also sometimes gets ahead of herself e.g., brothel poisoning and the cause of death of Jinshi’s friend. So her rather casual observation about Gaoshen not seeming like a Eunuch in Fuyou episode or his suitability as a husband when bringing treat for her and weeding the area around the Jade Palace. I concur that Eunuchs in many society e.g., Ottoman Empire and Chinese Empire being high ranked and wealthy is true. However, Maomao never makes the observation he is wealthy but does say he is of high status. And even when observing his high status does NOT use that to cast doubt on him being a Eunuch. I look forward to next season as more is revealed. The mixed clues may not all be intentional but it’s fun to speculate. 😺😺

@@gprovidakes that’s what I love about this show. Anime format aside, all the political maneuvering and innuendos, layers within layers, subtext of conversations, is just so perfectly believable to me as a lay person with a keen interest in history (not just Chinese but world history). Couple of loose points that I don’t think has been addressed though: what is with the colored firewood that gave out different colors when burnt, apart from linking Fengming, it doesn’t appear to have any impact on the plot. Also the death of the old official that Jinshi was fond off, was that really a side story not linked the the current arc? It could be, but just worried I missed something connecting that case to the Ah Duo arc. As far as I see, the official’s death seems to be a standalone similar to Concubine Fuyou side story

@@gprovidakes watching back, I still think Gaoshun the old rascal arranged for everything with his own money, with Lihaku arranging the event to reunite Jinshi and Maomao. Not important to storyline but fun to speculate. As you say, no reason that Gaoshun can’t be rich even if he is very humble in his duties.

@@JediLordWong The colored fire is already partly explained. They're used to pass secret signals with people outside the palace. Basically, a wood tablet is coated or impregnated with a certain mineral then sent out of the palace (or sent in by the counterparty). The tablet has no writing on it, so the palace censors won't identify it as a message. When the recipient burns the tablet, the color tells them what the message was.

that last thing is cordyceps. its a fungus that grow on worm. very very rare and very expensive. its was used as herb in china. nowaday its still expensive but lot less as there is farm and a lot of fake one.

The things what Jinshi gave to Maomao，that is a rare transitional medicine. The mushroom parasite in the worm, and finally the worm will become a mushroom. And holding the worm shape. It is a very hard to find and rare medicine.

Nice reaction guys, a nice recap episode and thankfully for once, came out nicely for Maomao. I really hate the taste of Cordeyceps and think it’s overrated. I am a bit puzzled why Maomao is so excited, rare and expensive as it is, cordyceps isn’t poisonous which is what gets Maomao high. Maybe it is, gotta do my research. So far I don't find any indication that it is poisonous, its medicinal properties is well known in Asia as anti-inflamatory, anti-cancer and anti ageing qualitites. Also this shows how high class courtesans/sex workers work, with song and entertainment, with a side of ass as one you mentioned. It really cost extra for that though, though less than th r whole entertain with wine, song and dance.

those are spoilers to me i intentionally avoid previews like that...cuz we will watch it..... btw spoilers to me, i do respect that you do not consider them spoilers...just answering you.

I agree that some of those "teasers" can be super spoilery, especially for shows that are all about the intrigue and mystery, and your brain is already working on overdrive processing the episode you just watched... it is super easy to pick up too many clues and get ruined for the next episode.
