Was so mad Jinshi caught himself when he was about to call her pretty/beautiful. And she's none-the-wiser. Kinda crazy that he thought she would pass the exam of being a court lady lol when she has never expressed an interest in anything else than her poisons, exhibit A: being her arm. Lmao so when Jinshi's helper called her Xiaomao, only Gaoshun has called her that up until now. So that's why he looked away when she looked up at him. They have a funny relationship.

There is a reason why Jinshi thinks he is just above average compared to normal person. The gap between a normal and unique one here is like heaven and earth. For example, for those who know Maomao, they rely on her wisdom in medicine and poison. Even the emperor himself did believe she could cure Lady Lihua. Even the resident doctor could not cure her whom we can assume have more knowledge compared to normal person when it comes to medicine. Intellect wise, that person with a monocle/single eyeglass is someone whom the emperor respects when it comes to intelligence whom Jinshi would not even compare. Remember that this is the emperor who abolished the slave system in his time. It requires more than above average to impress him, like a typical Asian Dad.

I looked up Court Lady in china and apparently it’s a very high honor. Also known as lady’s in waiting they were TECHNICALLY part of the emperors harem but a lot of the time they just had duties like Nannies for imperial children, tutoring, maids etc. essentially they were the ones in charge of a lot of domestic stuff and all had the possibility of being promoted to either a concubine OR even becoming the EMPRESS.

Many missed the implication when she said to the lady that wack her in the head near the military buildings smell of sandalwood and some bitter smell. My wife right away knew what it meant. Sandalwood is a predominantly male fragrance and bitterness is of sweat and $ex. She was also coming from the military area were al the men are…. I’m sure she knows that particular smells from her “sisters” working in the pleasure house.

I'm calling it right now. The tall lady is actually a military dude in disguise that was sent by the emperor or someone else to keep an eye on the outer court or something. That would explain the ridiculous height, nonexistent chest, the smell, and why she was so close to the military area. She or rather he was on their way back to the military area to tell whoever their working for what they found out today. But then they saw Maomao and had to switch up what they were doing to keep from being suspicious. Since as far as I can guess there would be no reason for a women to go to the military area so it would seem really suspicious if Maomao saw them go in there.

Court ladies are a level above attendants/servants. Court ladies are assigned to be in the inner court as they described where they are exclusive to whoever noble they are assigned to. They are like secretaries that tends to their master's home property. Think of like eunichs are exclusive secretarial servants of the king that attend to his needs and demands. Court ladies take care of the nobles and royalty that live in around the inner palace. Even as court ladies, a noble can have multiple, but usually the court lady with the most experience is called the head court lady who oversees the other court ladies to do their duties. They later mentioned court lady education. The inner palace is hard to get into bc they need to see ur background to make sure u can be trusted to tend to nobles and guests in the inner palace. That's why most court ladies are employed thru connections, nobles who are high class have daughters who are given a lot of education growing up to be court ladies. Similar to secretarial duties Ladies who were promoted within from outer court to inner court for outstanding work performance takes longer and are often looked down due to their commoner background

So Jinshi didn't want Maomao to be his personal assistant but he wanted her to officially be a court lady and have that title but that flopped so her title when asked is Jinshi's personal assistant 🤣🤣 Apart from not wanting Maomao to blow up a stable from her experiments Im guessing the stables are near the military side the east side that she needs to avoid I think apart from just getting snatched or punished for being in a forbidden area Im sure since Jinshi is involved with the military to an extent so if she doesnt go over that side lesser chance of his secret being blown.

Suiren his lead attendant is keeping an eye on things but seems to approve of Maomao (note Gaoshun shared info about Xiaomao 😺). I think Maomao not being seduced by Jinshi is a big plus for her by Suiren. Given the talent and authorities Head I Lady in Waiting I suspect she will be important character going forward. The tall Court Lady catching Maomao checking out the only herb garden in the outter palace must be foreshadowing.

Y'all can't take everything people say at face value. We have a lot of unreliable narrators in the show because these characters are limited by what they know and their own personal biases. Like how Maomao has a really low opinion of her own attractiveness, but we know she can turn heads if she tried. Likewise, Jinshi thinks he's only slightly above average in terms of intelligence and martial arts... but that's just his own insecurity speaking. That doesn't mean it's true. As evidenced by the fact that he easily beat Basen in a sparring match without breaking a sweat. And he has shown over and over again that he is cunning and clever enough to manipulate people to his advantage. Nothing we've seen of Jinshi so far indicates that he is lacking in wit and physical prowess. But that is how he perceives himself.
