@Will Cullen hard not to think that the Ukrainian peasants *were* , in fact, targeted, given that *a)* nearly all of their intellectual elite were _executed_ in 1928-1932 (see *Executed Renaissance* , or *Persecuted kobzars and bandurists* - those that weren't executed then were executed in the subsequent years), *b)* the famine was largely happening in areas where ethnic Ukrainians constituted the majority of the population (and even in Kazakhstan), *c)* Ukrainian peasants were physically prevented from going to other areas of the USSR, like Russia, or even escape to Poland - those that tried were either sent back or put to death, *d)* the sheer amount of deported Ukrainians to Siberia/Far East in the interwar period alone would constitute a genocide (let alone those who were deported during and after WWII).

@@GenericPurpleTurtlenot really, because if one claims that the Germans killed proportionally more Slavs than anyone else in their camps and during the course of the war, that doesn't negate the fact that the genocide committed by them was based on ethnicity/religion. So me acknowledging what happened in Kazakhstan during the famine doesn't negate my initial position as far as the Ukrainian peasants are concerned. Also, given the notorious nature/history of Soviets/Russians mistreating ( _to put it mildly_ ) Ukrainians as a nation, deporting them by force to Siberia dating back 100s of years, imprisoning/executing their leaders, banning their language (Ems Ukaz, example), I don't think you have a leg to stand on as far as claiming that this particular event, given everything that's been done previously, wasn't consciously put into action by deliberately targeting them (on top of the mountain of evidence that exists to confirm this - if you're choosing to whitewash or deny it, that's your own problem). As for the Executed Renaissance, I'm sure you'd find an article on the Belarusian one on page 10 of the Google Search you (supposedly) made. You can also use other means of research, namely Bing or Wikipedia, for the same terms.

So... If we have information in capitalism, why it vanishes in communism?
@kurtjohansson1265
@kurtjohansson1265 3 жыл бұрын
The information is prices. With out prices, no one can make accurate decisions economically. Under communist rule, prices are all fake, or not even there.
@MrSvlad
@MrSvlad 3 жыл бұрын
The information is in the form of the price mechanism. It “vanishes” under communism because in that system central authority arbitrarily sets what it believes to be market value-something that isn’t arbitrary at all but a reflection of supply and demand. Minus the information provided by prices, markets cannot effectively determine which goods need to be produced and in what quantities. This why Soviet store shelves where either bare or full of goods no one wanted.
@Slavaver
@Slavaver 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrSvlad in USSR was socialism. Communism follows after, but reforms in late 60's changed path from communism back to capitalism. We as humanity gather so much information about our world and behaviour of humans from all kind of means and the price still the only source for accurate economic decisions? But how you can get price of unique products such as scientific equipment (rovers, colliders, telescopes)? And what to do with latest example that Amazon got profit from raising prices on essential goods in this year crisis?
@juanme555
@juanme555 3 жыл бұрын
@@Slavaver Precisely, because prices are the absolute last ring of the chain, consumer final prices are precisely the entity that becomes one after taking EVERYTHING that came before it, which makes it in turn, the absolutely most efficient signal to base the next production chain from. You talk about Telescopes and ask how do you get the price, a Telescope isn't just made out of thin air by a Russian leftists who condemns Trump for being orange and #FreeHealthCareForWomen , a Telescope is made of hundreds of rings that make a chain that finishes becoming what a lab buys, mining the metallic materials, turning them into the type and shape that are necessary, making glass, cutting it, assembly, quality test, all of these things are different stages of equal importance that all have their own cost which upon further development, changes, all of these different costs add up to a more or less final cost, which is then tried, at all stages including the final one government is heavily involved in taking a large cut of everything, adding up to the costs artificially, and when you see the telescope on the shelve, that's the ultimate cost after they've all been fully completed and acounted for. There is so many stages to these goods that the slightest change of any stage, will INEVITABLY change the final outcome, logically. So what happens when #FreeHealthCareForWomenLifeStyle takes over and tells everyone how evil the patriarchic capitalistic system is due to something something inequality something something im gonna gib yous #Equality something something???? Well, what happens is that this psycho has absolute 0 clue what he's talking about, absolute 0 knowledge about basic economics (though he may have more than 0 degrees in economy college) and because he can only see what's in front of him , he will think that everything i just described about the different stages of development of any good is just greedy capitalist excuses, therefore, the price of the telescope should be set by the government, for the sake of equality. Obviously what's gonna happen is that it doesn't break the country from one day to the other, the evil greedy capitalists simply start leaving the country gradually, if im telescope manufacturer and i have to put up with this nonsense while Taiwan offers me a 7% income tax, 7% corporate tax and 7% VAT AND NOTHING MORE, no more taxes, simple and easy taxcode for maximum transparency, simplicity and fluidity, on top of that, labour laws are reasonable (few and basic) , no minimum wage, no import tariffs and no research and development regulations, not only i will now take my telescope business there, but i will take every last drop of wealth i have in your atrocious soviet Russia and make sure i invest everything in Taiwan, why? because if i can keep furthering my development, i can find ways to more easily and cheaply complete each stage, ring of the chain, while every single ring having higher quality than before, and when i can now charge less and take over a larger portion of the telescope market, i will be richer than ever now. That's basically why your "beautiful" dreams of "equality" are never going to work, there will always be a place freer than that that you offer, that's why Marx said that the revolution had to be global, you can't leave the slightest shine of light of Capitalism, for it will corrupt the masses, according to Marx. This is literally the story of how Intel, AMD, Voodo and GeForce destroyed the IBM monopoly (which some apple fanboys want to claim was actually a duopoly along with Apple but it wasn't towards the end, undisputed monopoly). Do you understand any of what i said, Boris?
@Slavaver
@Slavaver 3 жыл бұрын
@@juanme555 no, i understand only vodka, putin, medved... What kind of question is that? Yeah you right that price is "last ring of the chain". But don't you find it messed up that when humanity get into crisis like this virus prices on essential goods rapidly go up? "Chain" didn't change, taxes didn't change only demand. Of course after that demand goes down, but fewer people can afford it and it's still essential. In the past there was feudalism. People of that time also thought that there is nothing better. And now we have capitalism. That path took several centuries.

When war broke out it was fashionable to hate Tito, every ethnic group found a policy that he put in place against them which fueled hate for him. Not that theres not enough information. Theres too much for a monopoly to know what to do with. They can't process that much. A bad capitalist monopoly and a government monopoly can only make one size fits all solutions to problems. A proper non monopoly capitalist country allows for everyone to make their own stuff, their own weight solutions. It allows for personalized customization.

Thing with Socialism is Government have all the power, they control literally everything and that means your life too. With a democracy you have the freedom to not do something tomorrow, now that action may fuck you over be it not turning up to work or not paying a bill on time, but you have the freedom to do what you want, not that there are not consequences for your actions. If you want to come up with your own company tomorrow, fine do it, but if its a shitty idea with a shitty foundation and its only aim is to make money, 9/10 there is a better company out there already doing it, come up with a damn good idea, with a solid foundation that literally you as an owner are enthusiastic about you will 9/10 have more chances of success. The fact is, some are lazier than others some people would rather be told what to do than come up with their own solution or ideas, that is just a fact.

We also werent part of the cold war because we were a part of the unaligned movement (basically we werent with the soviets or the us). And now we dont have our own industry, every factory is owned by foreign heavily subsidized companies where the working conditions are horrible (in one factory workers are forces to wear diapers so they dont have to go to the bathroom). most young people still live with their parents because rarely any job pays well (i know a few fellow engineers who get paid a little bit more than minimum wage). we are basically a third world country. even china has moved their heavy industry here because they have better enviromental regulation and now we have the same air quality as bejing or bangladesh. our own government even made an ad for foreign investors how they should invest here because we are a high skilled, low cost labor force. sorry for the long read :D

There is no law asking you to help anyone and vice versa. The government sole purpose is to keep order and enforcing laws that have been made by the people. They can arrest the bad actors who are violating the law, like manipulating the free market. I think your brainwashed and just regurgitating talking point of right wing thinktanks financed by the Kochs and other evildoers who do not have the best interest of the economy or country or humanity for that matter at heart. There would be no economy and freedom or free trade without a strong government creating a space from which to be protected from such rich elites who, historically and now, seek to enslave the masses to their will, and would as soon gash each others eyes out and yours for a quick buck (as they did historically when the reins were let loose). Those same elites brainwash you into believing this nonsense, which is why they bought out the media. Without a strong government representatives with real teeth and regulation, the big fish would eat the small fish, until they got sick and died...which is what happened time and again until our revolutionary wars (American, French, and Communist) that put the elites temporarily in their place and humanity as finally had a chance to thrive a bit in the last 200 years as a result. If you want to give it all back to them, it will cause nothing but oppression and misery. They themselves don't know what is good for them, because they beleive some of the nonsense you state. They depend heavily on a public infrastrcture, and a publicly educated and ethical workforce. If this capitalist mindset of scamming everyone for a quick buck actually takes work among workers that produce all the real wealth, their paper money will be worthless. Its fine if you want a public figure, queen, whateveru, but if you allow the Gates, Mercers, and Mosks to recreate an aristocracy, it will haul humanity back to the darkages. However, if that's not enough, then strengthening it. Government shouldn't manipulating the market, that's all I am saying. If we have a law that can put people in jail, then the government should obey that law as well. Workers produce real wealth? You don't produce real wealth if you are a worker. These scum of the earth are worshiped ad nauseum, even though and probably because as cover for the fact they are blatant criminals by laws already on our books. If we wanted a society worth living in and the most productive, we would keep those grifters out of the system, provide free education, illegalize technology obfucatoin and trade secrets forcing all such into patents that expire, and produce strong laws and rights for inventors of technology, not just the buyers of such. Despite the fact capitalism crashed our economy in the great depression and started two world wars ...it was public investment not private that turned things around in the between times. As soon as we failed to tax the unmerited wealth of nonworkers and slimy grifters after ww2 things went South again in the 60s but luckily due to the prodding of a more honable Soviet communist culture which prized scientific achievement over short term profit... capitalist countries were forced into space due to sputnick. The stalinism that arose in USSR in the mid-1920's was a consequence of the inheritance of cultural and economic backwardness, isolation, failure of the spread of socialist revolution into western Europe, the weariness of workers from ww1, civil war, military intervention by 21 foreign armies. Despite that degeneration of the Russian Revolution, the planned economy stayed in place. And performed amazingly. Transformed the backward nation into an economic powerhouse. From famine during the civil war, to the bureaucratic mismanagement in Ukraine to being invaded by Nazis and having 15 million civilian deaths and 10 millions soldiers deaths, DESPITE ALL THAT, USSR sent the first object into outer space and the first man into outer space, before USA. DEFEAtED the nazis, saved Europe from Nazis. That shows the economic superiority of state planning. We need to move forward from capitalism, abolish it, move to next stage of human history, advance civilization on a world socialist basis, it's a world-historic task, capitalism has exhausted its progressive role for humanity. That does NOT mean fighting to restore Stalinism.

4:37 Well I agree with statement 1, no one has the right to tell us how to live our lives but statement 2 has nothing to do with monetary prices as he implies, but everything to do with data. There's nothing to say you couldn't quantify the value of a good based on its supply and demand data. Technically, you don't need monetary prices to determine this as data is the main metric and price is what we use bc we don't have a single transparent aggregate supply and demand of existing resources. 3 rightly implies force is bad but that there's no force under capitalism, which is unequivocally untrue. For instance, the capitalist says, Accept you need money to buy sth I claim is my property and I will let you have it for an agreed price, otherwise go live in the woods. This isn't forcing me to do sth? This is forcing me to go and do sth I don't want to do (work in a factory) just to earn enough money to buy sth from you that should be a public good. Then and only then can I go and do what I actually want to do free from force imposed upon me by capitalists

I take it that you are talking about full out socialism. That is not what progressives are in favor of. We still want capitalism but it needs to be fair, in other the workers have the right to unionize and the rich pay their fair share of income tax. We are right now partially socialistic, we all pay taxes to build our roads and schoold, police, firefighters and many other programs, the progressives just want more programs. We are nearing the point in this country where you will only be rich if you're born that way. Of course there are many examples of people coming up to the top on their own. Some of is luck some is just one good idea, but once you start to get rich the easier it gets to get richer. By the way I personally know at least three self made millionaires. I won't give examples but one was lucky, one was just a hard worker all of his life of many years and had the courage the take the risk and put in the hard work to get it done.

They just keep making the government more powerful and soon you will be talking about “full out socialism” as well. But rich don’t care whether it’s socialism or capitalism they will be rich. Countries like Finland, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Norway, etc kick ass on education compared to messed up systems like the US where they try to inject money into what is not something you want to treat as a commodity otherwise you end up in thirdworld country scenario, where only the wealthy kids are educated and the rest are doomed to either be rich crooks, or blue collar workers if they are extremely lucky. Which is exactly what has happened in the use as education has been more privatized the level of education for the average american sucks, and places like Finland which spend a fraction of the money that the US spends per kid have far far better outcomes. Medicare, same, far better in all socialized medicine countries then the US where it currently sits at 90th place or lower for the 99% of americans compared to Canadians, Fins, Dutch, Germans, Scandinavian countries, the UK even far better then the US. But as soon as the government takes over making shirts, or computers, or cars, that is where things go 100% to pot. So no one wants a car designed by socialism, or a fashion designer by committee, etc. The chinese 'suit' is not considered the height of fashion. And monopolies if you have 5 guys in a communist country sitting around dictating the price of milk, or insulin, that is clearly a terrible thing, but then when the same bloody thing happens in the US under unbridled crony capitalism, where 2-3 ceo's are setting the price, or sometimes even 1 guy is setting the price of insulin and other life saving drugs, that is clearly f---ed as well. Who cares what you call it, if the result is that Putin decides what is sold and what is not nationally, or Jeff Bezos and Zuckerberg and the Wallmart Family are deciding pretty much which products will succeed on a massive scale and which will die because they never show up in any searches, it clearly is not that different. Crony capitalism, vs totalitarian communism have far too much in common. As Trostky pointed out, where he might have been wrong in his solution, having far too much faith in his brother to not be corrupted by ultimate power, he did however see something things well, like the fact that the result of capitalism in the US would be crony capitalism which for all it's pretend democracy would end up no different then having kinds and emperors all over again, how is having a Jeff Bezos who has more wealth then 60% american house holds combined, any different then a monarch who owns everything. They both own everything, and serfs only can 'rent' off their land in a job that is designed to never allow for the people doing it to have even money to escape the bounds of poverty if they were to lose that job, and would in a month or two be back to owning nothing. So I hate this 'capitalism is this all powerful god who will ensure that everything is 'fair' and 'good' if we just let it alone'. When clearly democracy has long gone in the US, by every statistical look at the facts, people's votes no longer mean anything, they have zero effect on policy, or what bill is past. Zero, the only people whose opinion counts are the rich and lobby groups. Period. The average person's vote has no effect on what bill is voted in or not. None. So this bs about putting dogmatic faith in capitalism without checks itself is just ignorant as believing fairy tales. There proof very much shows that the opposite is true. Capitalism leads to cronyism, and the corruption of whatever system is there to protect the people's interest are subverted and the end result if you again have a few men/women who now again are royalty, and who get to decide whatever bill they want passed is passed, whatever leader they want gets in, if they put their money into, pretty much does whatever they are told, by the koch family, the bezos, etc. There needs to be another Roosevelt come in and turn American around, and let the rest of the world follow suit as it does with America. American's place as the 'shinning light on the hill' is only such because of Roosevelt implementing laws, and bills that created a super strong middle class, which then made America not only the envy of the world for that dream of having security for your family etc, but it also allowed America to have such a strong backbone of socialized infrastructure that she was no doubt instantly the world's biggest super power, without the dams that socialized make work programs, the steal factories that were birthed on the backs of these make work programs that Roosevelt instituted in the New Deal to end the Great Depression, this idea that any man who wanted to work would have a job, and that that labor was used to build the backbone of america, that is what she needs again. A strong middle class, inequality back down to non-absurb levels, etc... And that isn't going to happen just because you let the price of goods be dictated by whatever crony capitalist system has been established now to guarantee that the people in power now stay there... Without real belief in the right tool for the right job, none of this horseshit religious dogma around capitalism or any 'ism''s. Ideology just makes blind idiots as far as i can tell no matter what the 'ism' is behind it...

I think it's a bit disingenuous to toggle between communism and socialism as if they are the same thing (it's a very simplistic dare I say, American either/or pov). Social democracies like we find Scandinavia, or the Netherlands or New Zealand or Canada all boast higher standards of living and general quality of life than you find in countries dominated by either ideology; neoliberal capitalism or communism. It's ridiculous to compare Sweden or New Zealand to Venezuela or Soviet Russia. Historically, these various communist experiments have been complete horrors shows; as a utopian idea it's been roundly discredited. But narrow ideological capitalism, as well, I'd argue is equally evil; we're literally destroying our planet out from under us in our ideological obsession to perpetual growth and blind consumerism and accumulation of wealth. It perpetuates child and virtual slave labour in poor countries so a slim minority of extremely wealthy can continue to accumulate even more wealth, it finds no value to sustainability, it denies people basic access to education or health care if they can't afford it. It decimates local economies so multinational corporations can set up monopolies. There needs to be a middle ground. As a "good vs evil" dialectic, Communism vs Capitalism is a tired 19th century idea. The real dialectic is between empathy, sustainability, collaboration and social responsibility vs greed, destruction, exploitation and self interest. I'm not sure anarchism is the way to go though. It's just as individualistic as capitalism. We been organizing ourselves into societies in some form or other since mesopotamia; as far as I'm aware, anarchism has never been a viable model. Even an anarchist needs to rely on their wider community to some extent - who will put out your house when it catches fire? Who's going to deal with your waste?

Narrative views. Look at China and the 20% world population today, how do they enjoy life and expect more prosperity. China had and has market economy historically, like Silk Road. China communism was imported from France, Germany and Russia, the CCP fought 20 years bloody wars against West and Japan for China independence. China today is world No. 2 economy under communist party. Why don't you talk about communism in China? A type of mixing state politics and market driven economy. CCP exists now for the sake of staying in power to protect the elites from political turmoil that for sure will happen when democratization happens. Lex , this was the most anti-intellectual video I've seen on your channel, this basically boiled down to some stereotypical arguments on why Communism must be bad and evil because of some anti-socialism talking points and because bad people that did bad things said they were communists. so that makes all communists and ideas associated with communism inherently evil? I think it would be much more true to the hard analytic and intellectual nature of your channel's content to have more good faith talks on this subject of economics with more good faith and well-informed people , some great ones would be Richard Wolff or Yanis Varoufakis if you want their side of these arguments, the historian you had on about Stalin was much more interesting and truthful than this dribel.

@@janvarga4023 If the Nazis (fascists) had any kind of coherent economic policy prescriptions beyond revanchism and interventionism, yes. The Nazis never did anything differently in an economic sense than other wartime capitalist economies that resorted to heavy state intervention and planning working in conjunction with private capitalist interests in times of emergency. Its the same thing the US did during the depression of the 30s and during world war II to gear up for war. Fascists never stood for any fundamental change to the economic system of capitalism they only stood for their power as totalitarians to choose who stood atop that economic system. Socialism by contrast, does advocate a different fundamental organization of the economic system whereby the power to control capital or the means of production would be controlled by the workers themselves rather than by a small class of capitalists who then control the surplus of that system. By all means I support and love content where these ideas and different concepts for designing an economic system can be debated in a fair and rational way. Laissez-Faire vs Planned Economies, Capitalism vs Socialism, etc. But what was discussed in this segment was more a broad characterization of communism as being defined by the unethical acts of authoritarian regimes and no real discussion of the economic ideologies themselves.
