Fine single-handing there, and a gem of a boat. We had a 16 for a few years.

Amazing little ship, sails very well in heavy seas for a boat of that size.

After seeing a Compac 19 last weekend, I'm selling my Catalina 25 and West Wight Potter to get one of these ! Awesome flipping boat !

I like the technique of bow stringing the jib sheet between the winches. And I noticed the tiller lock. Very handy. Just bought one. Haven't used it yet.

That Wavefront Tiller Lock was a great addition. Much better than using a tiller tamer since a tiller tamer requires both hands to operate. The Wavefront operates with 1 finger. I love it.

Buy or get a roller jib, I do not and therefore can not reduce a 110. The Compac does not tack well if at all with just the main. I have a type 1 with a factory sprint added by P.O. and type 1 pulpit, no clearance for a roller , the head stay is 1/2" from the pulpit. Looking for a smaller used jib for " those days" . New main sure helped performance otherwise.

She seems quite fast for a Compac 19...

Looks great, what was the speed?
@mb72267 жыл бұрын
Don't know a precise speed here but I'm guessing between 5 and 5.7 knots. If I'm less than 5, I figure I'm doing something wrong.

I owned a Montgomery 17 for a couple years and loved it in all respects, so I'm wondering if you ever got a chance to plot the upwind angle in conditions like this? I know it's busy sailing, but it would be interesting to know how far up the boat will point with that shoal keel vs. the shoal keel/swing keel on the Monty. Any guesses? There is a nice C-19 for sale in my neighborhood and I feel an urge after not having a boat for a while. That Monty was the creme de la creme of trailer sailers, IMO. The Compacs are just as nice, but different.

I could point to about 60-65º in conditions like this. In somewhat lighter winds I could do 45º but that certainly cost me some speed.
@OutnBacker4 жыл бұрын
@@mb7226 That's pretty good, considering the shallow keel. It indicates a good skipper. The Montgomery 17 I had pointed a little better, but not because of me. I'm going over to look at that Compac today.

Did you end up getting the Compac? I purchased a Montgomery 17 that needs a lot of work, and I noticed a Compac 19 for sail, and wondered how those two compared?
@OutnBacker Жыл бұрын
@@randykaminski6214 No, I didn't. It was a little rough for the price, with a foredeck that had rot under the glass. As to comparisons, the Compac is obviously roomier inside. The M-17 is not for two people unless you are very friendly. Also, a bit hard to move around inside for me at 67 and beat up. Sailing either one is easy solo, but the M-17 will run away from the Compac 19 in any sea. She is cut for speed , as well as being seaworthy and safe. The ballast /weigh tratio is quite high on the M-17 and I do not think it is possible to lay one down unless you do everything bad at the exactly the same time, in the worst possible conditions. The M-17 will simply not go over. It will heel until the sides of the hull act like a toboggan with a dry cockpit, then just turn up and stop dead in the water. Very safe little ship. Lyle Hess made no mistakes in designing it. Montgomery refined the lines and made it fast. CAVEAT: I know nothing about the later models. Both of mine were early 70's.

Looks like you have the Jib furler rolled up part way. Any special technique for that?
@mb72264 жыл бұрын
No special technique. Just roll it in until you have good control of the boat and you are satisfied with the sail shape.
