The compact Hyfin Seal by North American rescue is a dual pack of vented chest seals. These seals are used for penetrating trauma to the chest and abdominal areas. These would be a great item for an EDC (Every Day Carry) Medical kits. These take up less room in your trauma kit.

I see that despite each pack being labeled “twin pack”, each peel pack ONLY has one seal. The twin pack means two peel pack singles together.

Yes!! Important to note if the 2 packs have been separated so this way when you open one you don’t expect there to be 2 seals in it.

Great video ! Just ordered the Vented Hyfin Seal that is a One Way Valve that lets air and blood out and stops the air from coming in... And a Tourniquet is needed for dangerous sports, Chainsaws or axe ! ! ! Remember to call 9-1-1 and to stay on the line... Thank you for the video ! tjl

So how do vented chest seals work as far as sealing? Is the center the sticky part that seals the wound, then the vents aren't stick so it leaves a gap between the skin and seal for blood and stuff to flow through

Another Fantastic Video..... Thank you Sir! Quick question (If you don't mind?.... and I completely understand if you don't want to give these answers out for free), Would you recommend packing a chest wound with gauze 1st and then using the chest seal...... or just slap the chest seal on by itself? (Sorry if this is a Noob question, But I am really trying to learn about "Real" first aid) Thanks in advance.

I notice you have an Izzy in your EDC example. Do you recommend carrying a pressure bandage over a rolled gauze (H&H Compressed) when space is limited? I already know a tourniquet is a non-negotiable part of a good kit.
@SkinnyMedic
@SkinnyMedic 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Saunders (Integrated Defense) I guess if space was limited I would carry the H&H over the Izzy. It would be nice if you could carry a H&H and maybe a 4" Izzy.

+SkinnyMedic Doesn't the halo come with one vented one non-vented? I feel that is the way to go. That way if one of the entrance /exit wounds was on the casualty's back and you had to move him, the non-vented would be less likely to come off/ be held open. You could put the vented one on the frontside and not have to worry about it getting caught on a litter/ the ground. Would you agree with this?

@SkinnyMedic
@SkinnyMedic 8 жыл бұрын
+R.A.S. Tactical Technically :-)
@cnorth3036
@cnorth3036 8 жыл бұрын
Decompression needles are intended for closed pneumos. Other words when the chest wall is closed (no stab wounds or gun shots) no penetration into the chest. On closed pneumos the lung still has to collapse inside the chest wall building pressure (tension pneumo) against the heart and lung. For example lets say from blunt trauma to the chest by car accident when ur chest hits the steering wheel. (ppl may gasp and hold their breath prior to a motor vehicle collision due to fear) and essentially it's like blowing air into a brown paper bag and popping it with ur fist. The needle releases built up pressure around the lung and heart restoring temporary function. Vented versus non vented here.. You would essentially have to "burp" the non vented seal if pressure was to build up in an OPEN pneumo. The vented chest seal is to release pressure through build up excessive pressure...
@SkinnyMedic

+C North I agree with your statement but even small penetrating trauma seal over. But yes you are correct. I don't think the average Joe needs a needle.

SkinnyMedic, Quick question from a former Army CLS and former FF/EMT-B. I've been told that just about everything you can do with the non-vented seal can be duplicated with a strip of duct tape. My only argument to that is that the duct tape doesn't have the same area coverage as the chest seal. That said, I have duct tape in all of my personal kits including my pocket rescue kit but haven't purchased seals yet. Thoughts? Thanks. Also, regarding the instructions on the packaging, it sort of reminds me of being on the fire department and seeing new first responders and EMTs buying those pocket medical guidebooks out of the Galls catalog. Dude, if you are whipping out a handbook on the scene of a trauma to figure out how to use your gear, maybe you should find someone who actually paid attention in class and actually felt it necessary to learn what they need to know. I'm not talking about a Paramedic looking up drug doses. That's different. But some stuff you should have down after your 40 hour class is over and you have some time in the field. Right? I sure would not want to be a patient laying there looking up to see the guy from the rescue unit consulting a guidebook to figure out how to splint my compound fracture. Talk about a way to shake any confidence I might have had about being helped.

+cellblock776 In my opinion these stick better than duct tape. Duct tape is not bad but these are better.
@functionfirst7355

+cellblock776 Somewhere floating around is a guy trying to patch a real GSW to the chest with duct tape. It doesn't go well. The adhesive on these dedicated chest seals is much more aggressive, and designed to work in sandy, slightly wet environments. Duct tape is more than likely to fail you.

I cringed when you said "pull the red tab" when you opened the outer packaging. Ripping the packaging in such a way doesn't allow for you to use the outer packaging as an improvised seal for the part of the wound (entrance or exit, which ever you find second) if one exists. The TCCC handbook actually directs cutting the packaging open for this reason and requires the use of the outer packaging for the second chest seal. Of course a second commercial seal could be used or a different material could be used to improvise but when you need to conserve resources opening the packaging by ripping it could be a costly mistake.
