I stayed at an "illegal" airbnb in DC, they had a lot of rules about "not talking to anyone, and if approached, you are a friend of the homeowner" etc. Honestly I didn't care too much, but ultimately reported them for the place being disgusting and insecure. But they just removed the listing and relisted it under a new name within a week lol.

The ugly side of tourism is that these companies ruin entire neighborhoods and cities. For example, lots of generational folks in the French Quarter of New Orleans and nearby neighborhoods were pushed out to make room for daily renters. There are entire neighborhoods where no one lives there because it's more profitable to have it all be airbnbs. Kinda like South Beach and the boutique hotels. All the local culture gets killed. Same with historic places in Italy and Spain. All the old city centers are nothing more than rentals and airbnbs and the local culture is gone.

The host messaged me and asked why 4 stars. I didn’t see it until the next day when she messaged me again and said “I gave you an opportunity to respond and you didn’t so I won’t be hosting for you or any of your guests again.” Like okay, bully me into leaving a 5-star review. advertising and marketing eat away most of their revenue I guess but I think it still makes no sense, I get it when it's a company like Lyft who need to spend huge amounts on advertising because they could lose market share to Uber. But Airbnb has almost no competition, people already like them better than hotels so why do they keep losing money?
@SaruParadise

Customer acquisition has to be a huge cost. So much of startup profitability is growing the user base to grow revenue and raise valuation (or stock price) to get more capital to expand to get more capital to expand… their second biggest cost is probably legal and lobbying as they, like Uber, benefit hugely from being able to skirt regulations that apply to their competitor (hotels) which aren’t hugely profitable (compare Marriott or Hilton valuations to Airbnb). But fundamentally it may not be a profitable venture. Hotels are regulated for a reason. Airbnb is forced to self-regulate as they grow, and as some places start regulating then. The sharing economy is more a product of venture capital than good ideas, and lobbying to skirt regulations that would benefit the customers who don’t realize the lack of protection until it all hits the fan.

Things weren't ready when we arrived and the lady was trying to implement all these rules once we arrived (none which were in the listing). The bathroom also had some issues. You are missing a key criticism of Airbnb that was well documented. Hosts who create false listings and con users into a new listing at the last minute. As an example that I remember a young couple rented an Airbnb in Chicago months before arriving. When they did arrive, the host said something along the lines of a water leak was going on to make it to where they couldn't rent that particular place they originally had seen on the app, but for a lesser or same price, they could rent out another apartment. The host would then show them all the photos either inside or outside of the app. Being that it was a last-minute change and as a guest, you couldn't switch out without paying extremely high prices, they reluctantly would agree. As you can guess, the house was not what was described in the photos and would be a horrible experience for the guest. On top of that, Airbnb would deny them their money back, saying that they rented outside of the application and that the refund policy doesn't apply.

@@SnoopyDoofie I think the criticism in the fact that since it's such a decentralized and "personal" service it facilitates and breeds predatory behavior that other services does not have a problem with. If a service makes it easy for scammers and predators to thrive, it's a shoddy service.

They might not have turned a profit on paper, but rest assured the people who made it have made plenty via their company salaries and investors have made plenty with dividends. Turning a profit isn't strictly necessary for making money. It can even be a _detriment_ to making money, since profit would be taxable. The business and economic world is a world of shady and often seemingly nonsensical things.

Hotels offer services such as concierge and 24 hour guest assistance that I am happy to pay extra for. They also have well marked exits for fires and often have restaurants. I don't travel enough to want to pinch pennies on this. If I want to stay somewhere interesting and not located in the middle of a tourist area, I've discovered larger bed and breakfasts (at least 8 rooms) with years of reviews to be a lovely choice. They often have an on-staff person all night as well. I wouldn't touch an Airbnb. I have used Uber and the other one, but not during the pandemic.
@sor3999

Don't need to pay extra. You can find hotel rates cheaper than AirBnB. A lot of listings are desperately trying to get their mortgage paid off. Hotels don't have this problem and they of course scale better because they have 500+ unit buildings so when things are slow they can offer rock bottom rates. I have a lot of younger friends that can't seem to do anything without an "app". AirBnB is what they're used to and they don't know how to book a hotel to compare rates. Hotels during non-busy times can be incredibly cheap and going for the cheapest accommodations is usually better than the best AirBnBs.

With a hotel you get amenities, room service, pro-consumer laws and regulations hotels have to follow. Not all investors are foreign. Just rich people in general. But the major bump in real estate prices are luxury condos. If your metro area has built a bunch of new Lux condos over the past 10 years, the value of the surrounding area instantly becomes higher. Thus when it’s time to sell homes they become more expensive. Singapore has government subsidized housing and it’s for middle class not just the poor. It’s the only way to bring down prices. The problem. Luxury condo prices will fall too. These are tax shelters and banks for the super rich. Think about it. If you got 10 million, you can’t just put that into a normal bank. This the whole purpose of Lux condos. There are many Lux condos that no one even lives in. They may not even be owned by a person but an LLC that buys a bunch of Lux condos around the country and divides them into stock like investment units for the rich to put their money into. Property value usually rises over time. It also shields them from certain taxes. It’s the reason why to afford a home people need to move to a less densely populated city. The problem is that e good paying jobs may not be there. Thus I believe the move is only for recently retired people who sold their home in a big city like LA or New York for 900,000+ dollars and downsized moved to a smaller city where they can purchase a home for under 400,000 and live of the profit, social security, and whatever retirement income they have.

Tbf, none of these sound like issues with airbnb itself, but just shitty people using the service. They can't really control what the people using the service do. Sure you could have it in the terms and conditions "don't be racist or trash people's houses", but you'd assume that'd be a given. I guess a fix to the last issue could be making it so that you can't put whole houses on there, but just individual rooms or something, then people might stop buying up houses just to use as airbnbs. I've only used airbnb once as a guest while visiting a city for a convention and it was fine.

@Rilenz13

@Kylie Byrnes they make billions because they created a product/service that a lot of people wanted to use, where else do you expect the money to go? I'll blame big businesses when they're actually at fault for something, but all the examples given in this video were the result of the shitty people using the service and not the company itself. Just blaming the company doesn't punish the people that caused the actual harm. Arguments like this just allows other people to get away with stuff and punishes the others using these services who do nothing wrong, because the blame just gets placed on the largest, easiest target. And they do do things, they change policies and update their terms or whatever to try and disuade things like this in the future, but you can't make something 100% invulnerable to stupid people. I even suggested a change they could make in my original comment by making it so people couldn't put whole houses up for rent on their service, which isn't "letting them get away with doing nothing". "you're all sheep" the only people I see use this phrase are all people who think exactly the same and just read it somewhere else or heard it in a movie and they think it sounds cool. Airbnb didn't tell me shit or to think a certain way, I'm just giving my own opinion based on what was said in the video, but all that seems to have gone over your head in favour of "big business = bad" instead of maybe "the individuals who caused this harm should be held accountable for their actions" .

I don't travel all that much, but when I do, AirBNB has been on my regular rotation of services I search when shopping for lodging and comparing prices and all that. The three times I've used them have all been when traveling to attend motorsports events, which are usually in smaller markets with less lodging options nearby, and have found them to be cost effective in those situations while providing a generally better experience than a hotel. Of course, that's as a result of doing my research on where we end up staying, and I've seen plenty of listings that likely wouldn't have resulted in as good of an experience, and at times have decided on more traditional options. I think it's smart to add them and similar sites to the places you look for lodging when traveling, but treat them as another potential option, not as your only or primary choice.

it is "Perceived value" this is true in almost all industries..it is what the customers perceive as the value for the service...which can be wildly different than the real value.....also what the market will bear.. if 2 service providers provide the exact same service but 1 charges 3 times more it is perceived they are a better service..of course there is a limit if you charged too much the customer will think you are gouging..if you price it too cheap there must be something wrong with the service...delicate balance for sure... real world example..a company i worked for many years built a black box that was specific to an industry for specific task..we were the only ones building anything like it..for all materials and labor they were in it for about $20-$30 per unit..they marketed it for $150..sales were sluggish ..so they made a few changes they raised the price to $1000 and offered a lifetime warranty and sealed the box completely (you would have completely destroy it to see what was inside) ..due to the fact that we used off the shelf parts anyone could build it...sales skyrocketed...

Many cities have effectively “banned” AirBNB to 1. Only allow primary residences to be listed. 2. Only a small percentage of the year can be hosted. And it has had ZERO effect on rent prices going up. They keep rising. It has nothing to do with Short Term Rentals. Reason #3 is not really as big a problem as others say. Being a landlord to a long term lease is also extremely risky as they can refuse to pay and the courts always side with tenants.
