Love the tried and true 4runner. For most people it is going to be the first choice. The new Sequoia looks great. Hats off to Toyota. But the pricing is insane for these larger suvs these days. If you don’t believe me, do a search on KZfaq. There is a Toyota engineer from Japan that spoke on this exact topic. The bottom line is that there is zero quantifiable difference between a Toyota made in Japan or a Camry made in Kentucky. The production processes, training for the workers and quality control checks are exactly the same. Americans need to get over whatever this absurd self loathing that is permeating our society. Millions of Americans work incredibly hard at their jobs.

As someone who just purchased a 2022 TRD Pro 4Runner on 12/12/22, although the 2023 Sequoias drivetrain (TT V6 and 10spd Auto) was intriguing and exciting, what really made the decision was the years of proven reliability in the gen 5 4 runner. Additionally, the price plays a huge difference. A gas guzzling V6 5spd trans that has decades of tried and true reliability vs a new i-Force powertrain is the easiest decision. Maybe a trade up when the prices go down. $80k for a kitted out toyota is crazy in any year observed.

We have a big family (4 kids, 2 older and 2 in car seats/boosters) and we progressed from a 4Runner to a GX to a 200 series LX. All modded with the 4Runner being my daily driver and the GX as my wife's daily driver. Had the 4Runner when we had 2 kids, got the GX when we had 3 kids, then the 200 series LX570 when we had 4 kids. It was a hard choice between a 2nd gen Sequoia or the 200 series LC/LX570. 2nd gen Sequoia have more 3rd row space and cargo space behind the 3rd row. 200 series LX interior is much better and more comfortable. LC/LX is shorter and easier to park/drive. Granted, the 4Runner and GX is much easier to drive and park than either the 200 series or the Sequoia. Off-road, the LX is better once I switched to 18" rims and A/T tires. Decided on the LX570 vice a Land Cruiser for the hydraulic suspension. Plenty of debate on iH8MUD on the advantage and disadvantages of the hydraulic suspension but it worked for my family's use case. With the reliable hydraulic suspension, I don't have to fuss too much with aftermarket shocks/suspension like I did on the 4Runner and GX. I just change the hydraulic fluid out every 30-60k instead of having to rebuild the aftermarket coilovers, which I constantly have to do on the 4Runner and GX. And I have 2.5" coilovers which is oversized for the 4Runner/GX weight class. Stock OEM shock is slightly less than 2.0". Rebuilding coilovers is something that nobody talks about when they go with aftermarket suspension but it is something you have to do every 45-80k depending on how you abuse it. For the LX570, you can pretty much slap on some armor, tires, and go. Does just as well as my 4Runner and GX except for narrow trails. Plus it has all the off-road goodies whereas the 2nd gen Sequoia only has ATRAC. You can also mod the 200 series LC/LX crazy like the Tundra with Harrop or Magunson TVS supercharger, Harrop e-locker/ARB air locker, armor, etc pretty easy whereas 2nd gen Sequoia doesn't have many options (except for the ones shared with the 2nd gen Tundra). My 4Runner is supercharged but the GX can't be supercharged... The 200 series LC/LX however, can be supercharged. Due to the independent rear suspension in the 2nd gen Sequoia, which gives you more interior space, your rear articulation is limited and you don't have a rear locker aftermarket option... As for cargo space limitation on the 200 series, we have a hitch mounted swing away cargo box like StowAway2 or Rola Adventure. It is raised so it doesn't impact the departure angle as much. Plus we can take it off and leave it at the campsite and still take the family off-roading. I don't plan to have a flat roof platform on the LX like I did on the 4Runner and GX since I don't usually carry anything on top. Plus the roof platforms reduced my 4Runner and GX's fuel economy, especially with a roof top tent. As for tech, it is easy to add wireless Android Auto/Carplay to the 200 series. Plenty of aftermarket options out there for less than $1000. Same with brake controllers. Not sure why people complain about tech in cars when the tech in any car will be out of date in less than 5 years with no way to upgrade except through OTA updates. Even the ones with OTA doesn't last forever, just look at your Android/iPhones. Manufacturers only put out OTAs for about 2 years before you are forced to buy a new phone or be stuck with what you have.

The new 4Runners sweet spot is the sr5 premium 4x4. By a long shot. It’s much cheaper and actually possible to get under sticker, it’s got all the heated seats and safety tech you could want, and it’s so capable. You really don’t need the rear locker of the trd off road, and it’s the same price as the trd base, but with the premium heated seats and led lights and safety tech. Just a better deal. Also go five seater. Don’t mess with the 3rd row, couldn’t agree more, it’s just a waste of space. I have a 2022 sr5 premium 4Runner. It’s been absolutely amazing and I can’t express enough how good it is stock off road. The only thing to upgrade asap is the tires. The dueler highway tires are fine for summer highway driving but they are terrible and down right useless in ice and snow and even just flat gravel roads. Not very good around town on rough roads either. Grab some ko 2’s or better even all around some Falken wild peak at3w’s. Much better all year tire on and off road and not too expensive

Good comparo! Thanks. One comment. There's no need to create a problem for things that have been solved. Toyoda needs to leave the 4Runner (and hopefully its upscale cousin, the GX) alone. Why do they sell so well. Because old problems were solved: they're reliable, simple to use/fix, there's like a gazillions part in the distribution systems, they drive fine and are safe. When that fancy sequoia needs an electric thingy mabobby, good luck getting it.

@@ALMX5DP true but because it's "not" removable there's likely some sort-of voiding the interior if you do remove it. Like the slide out tray in the 4runner. @@Christian-Berger sure, I'm pretty open to modifying my vehicles. I've removed seats before and filled in the area with panels or carpeting as needed. A piece of MDF and some similar carpet material should make this cargo area pretty OEM in appearance. I'm sure an aftermarket company will do similar here eventually if that's not someone's preference or skillset though. I just figured those commenting on this were of the sort to overland or engage in similar hobbies, so to me for those people i feel it's not a huge barrier to overcome.

Toyota if you’re reading this, please move the rear HVAC vents of the 4Runner into the roof or side pillars! If you have a dog/kennel the rear HVAC is blocked by folding the rear seat bottoms for the flat floor. The only option is to take the seat bottoms out to get airflow to the rear with it folded.

I definitely like the Sequoia but it’s hella expensive. I bought my wife a 2021 Toyota 4Runner Limited Night Shade Edition and we love it, the only problem it was that the dealer ships are over pricing the vehicles. We are going to pay $68k for it in total, when it should had been maybe around 58k to 60k at the craziest, but oh well, my wife wanted it and bought it for her and I know that it’s a wise investment. Last week I went to take my truck for a service to the dealership and they had a brand new Sequoia TRD Pro in white and they were selling it for 92k, I was like what in the holly world is going on with this people man. They take advantage of who ever they can and the bad thing is that people actually pay it, that’s why they keep on doing it. But oh well, great video by the way!!!.

In great shape with nice leather seats and a moonroof. All for $19,000. Put in a bit of work, so more like $22,000. And people are out here spending 50, 70, and 90 grand on cars that are barely any better. Just newer, look a little nicer and slightly more modern. I could never bring myself to do that when I could buy 3 used trucks in great shape for basically the same price.

This is one of the main reasons why we purchased a low mileage 2018 Sequoia SR5. The lack of cargo space and engine variation Toyota decided to go with. Immediately made our decision to stay true with the 2nd gen Sequoia V8. Exterior and interior appearance of the new Sequoia may look more appealing compared to the 2nd gen Sequoia. But if it lacks functionality and purpose what good is it? I still think the 2nd gen Sequoia looks great and you can't go wrong with the well known reliability of it.

Cannot compare and expect it to be a battle of which do I choose. They are not the same. They don't work for everyones needs, let lone wants. 2 different years, 2 different trims. The fact they are both Toyota with the same logos and they are both SUV's is about all you got in common here. Be honest, they don't match up. What Nathan said at the end about the powertrain is exactly what most of us 5th Gen. 4R people would like to see happen. However, as one of the minority owners, I won't swap out my rig even if they did. I did not buy my rig to swap out every few years. If I wanted to swap rigs out that fast I would have bought a Chevy that would crap out in 1-2 years and force me to buy something else. I knew what I was getting 100% the pros and the small disadvantages of powertrain efficiency, gear dated options, no safety camera systems, driver lane stuff, etc. By todays standards it is ancient in tech. (normal) But I accepted that for its capabilities and reliability. 1 and done. Will out live me. IF tech. and modern conveniences are a driving point, don't get a 4R. Simple as that. Even if and when they finally change it up, it will be that way for 10-20 years and you will be bummed when all the other competitors go to virtual reality displaces and you are stuck looking out a boring windshield. 🤣

I know Toyota doesn't want you to do it, and would likely s#$t bricks but you really need to do it. Get yourself a 2021 or 2022 2nd gen Sequoia TRD Pro and do the comparison already. There a tons of 2nd gen owners that would lend you their vehicle to do the comparison, I know I would, but I live 2000kms from you in the great cold north. Be sure to talk about the real world fuel economy, the cargo space, 2nd and 3rd row space, fulltime 4WD, the locking centre diff, the approach and departure angles, the ground clearance, and the ATRAC / off-road modes.
