Thinking about getting a hybrid SUV? Well, you need to watch this comparison between four of the most popular SUVS on the planet first. We've tested here are the Haval H6 Ultra Hybrid, Subaru Forester Hybrid L and Toyota RAV4 GXL Hybrid. Plus, just to see how fuel efficient these hybrids are we've also thrown in a regular combustion engine SUV as well - the highly acclaimed diesel version of Mazda's CX-5 Touring Active.
All these SUVs are aimed at families and we’ll tell you what they’re like for practicality, safety, how they are to drive, what features they come with, if they’re good value-for-money, and of course their fuel consumption.

I almost didn't test Drive the H6 from watching Australian reviews on it, but I am glad I did eventually test drive it. I found the car to be pleasant and comfortable and the best fit for me and my family, did I mention the insane value for money? I tell you if you listen to these guys you will only buy Toyota Rav 4s.

My wife and I test drove a number of these mid sized SUVs and eventually settled on the H6. I agree, the ride can be better and only having access to climate control and other functions via the touch screen is sometimes annoying. However, two things won us over: 1. the literally insane value for money that the H6 offers and 2. the fact that we did not have to wait for almost a year to get in behind the wheel of our new car. I reckon if GWM can sort out the suspension and some of the interior control surfaces with a midlife refresh model they will surely be up there with the best in class.

Ok. As a previous Rav 4 owner, I'd say that it was ok to drive. I never heard a single person ever say it's super nice to drive, it's ok. Any of these cars here are probably not any worse. And why would you call it the cheapest? Because it isn't. It's not a drive away price you list.

G'day Chris, which generation RAV4 did you own? What model year was it? Asking because the fifth generation RAV4 we tested is on Toyota's new TNGA chassis, which is excellent for ride and handling. As for the price, the RAV4 is indeed the cheapest. The list price is $40,450 and using Toyota's price calculator the DA price is $42,083. I think that means you owe me a beer ; ) Richard

Watching the video, was thinking Haval would win hands down. But when i heard the Rav4 is "more sporty" than the Haval. I knew impartiality was out the window. Can somome explain to me how the Haval with a bigger battery pack, turbo engine producing more HP and torque combined is less sporty than the Rav4. The fact that you can cruise up to 60km/h before engine kicks in while you cant get the Rav4 out of the parking lot before ICE kicks in. Of course let's not mention Rav 4 interior from 1990s, less tech, less features, etc etc (and yes, I've owned Toyotas and a lexus, but give credit where due)

Not making any observations on whether the Haval or Toyota is actually "sportier" but there is a difference between "sporty" and outright power, I own a Volvo XC60 T8 hybrid it produces 450+ hp and 710nm torque - does 0-100 in 4.8 sec and Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV which has 1/2 the power, /2 the torque and 0-100 in a touch over 6 seconds but the Alfa QV is hands down "sportier" - Despite the 21" Pirelli P-zero's on the Volvo it simply can't handle tight twisty stretches of road with anywhere near the precision and poise (i.e. cornering speed / agility) of the Alfa.

Great review! I always enjoy Richard's reviews. They are informative and fun to watch. I'm always curious about how gas mileage numbers are done in Australia. The official numbers always seem so low and the real numbers quite high from what we see in Canada. For example the all wheel drive RAV4 in Canada is rated at 6.0 l/100km. And it is not difficult to reach those numbers (compared to the official 4.7 l/100km and real world 8.0 l/100km shown in the video). I have a 2021 Toyota Venza (Harrier) and over the last year we have averaged 6.3 l/100km. Just wondering why the Australian numbers are so different?
@carsguide
@carsguide 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, glad you like the reviews! OK so the mileage figures. I jumped onto Canada Toyota's website and checked out the specs for the RAV4 and compared the fuel consumption with the Aussie specs and you are absolutely right - the Canadian official fuel numbers are higher than the official Australian ones. There's about a 1.2L difference between the two combined fuel consumptions of the AWD RAV4. And here we enter the murky, so say mystical, world of fuel consumption testing. Australia uses its own regulations for fuel consumption testing and Canada uses its own regulations. The way I test car fuel consumption is to fill the tank to capacity, zero the trip computer, then drive the vehicle on city roads, suburban roads, then rural roads and then motorways/freeways. Then I refill the tank to capacity to find how much fuel has been used. On a comparison like this one, we all met at the petrol station filled each tank to capacity and then drove them over the same distance on the same roads, mostly in a convoy and finished at a petrol station to fill the tanks again. I can then calculate how many litres we've used for each car over the distance travelled. I tend to regard the Australian official fuel consumptions as 'serving suggestions'. You could probably achieve them given ideal conditions, but I think the Canadian way of measuring is a bit more real. Thank you Richard
@markus6664
@markus6664 Жыл бұрын
I have observed that the Carsguide guys always get horrific fuel consumption on their reviews (they drove a new Outlander non-hybrid and somehow got about 14.7L/100, like a V8 would!), so they must be having too much 'fun' ' I think. Meanwhile I test drove a Haval H6 hybrid for an hour on a mix of urban and country roads, including a couple of sprints to feel the power, gauge showed 4.4L/100 at the end.

Some time ago I traded my Jeep Cherokee in for a Rav 4.. You could love the Jeep for it's character, but it was an absolute junk. The Rav 4 had none. What I like about china and Chinese cars in general is that they provide a valuable service to everyone without extra charge. If you drive a Chinese car say a Haval or MG and like it, then all is good you get what you want and your money's worth. If you hate Chinese cars and do not drive one, then the presence of these cars now and then on the road only makes you feel good about yourself and help reinforce the notion that you're better than the next person at making the right choices. Either way everybody wins so I fail to see what the haters are onabout.

I’d never touch a diesel, I only wish Mazda made more hybrid models. SUVs aren’t for me but small hatches/sedans are. Even then, I like the Mazda3 but there’s no true hybrid option across the range like the Corolla Hybrid. I’d love to be able to use half the fuel for the same journey, more worth it given high fuel prices. If I had to get a medium SUV, I’d get a top of the line CX-5 with the 2.5 Turbo - what a fun and powerful engine.

I drove one for years long distances and often on remote outback roads. It got me through and comfortably. I have recently got a rav 4 cruiser. If it is able to replicate the solid reliability, comfort and safety of Toyotas I have driven in connection with my job I will be happy. It is a joy to drive. Uncomfortable with its intrusive connected services though. As for the H6 I am not going to own a vehicle from an Industry which is so heavily subsidised by the Chinese government. Great review.

We have the CX diesel! Top top car!❤ If you drive highway kilometres, the CX 5 will outperform all the rest on fuel consumption. Hybrids are only good for city driving and if you don’t tow. That said, my wife’s next car will be between the RAV 4 hybrid or CX 60 diesel/hybrid.

Hello Richard As always your videos are fab. Appreciate your work. But I have confusion if you want to choose between Rav4 HV GXL AWD Auto CVT which is now $50453 and Haval H6 Ultra hybrid which is $46103 then which one would you go for. I am getting both the cars in next week for the above mentioned price, so availability is not the issue for me. I am really confused and unable to make the decision. After sale market of haval is not so good as compared to Rav4. And now they have raised the price of rav4 so I am not sure is it worth to buy Rav4 or haval at this time now. Is this something you can please guide on. By any chance if you can please reply little early it would be really appreciated.

Hi Wayne, a valid point but the ADRs are so strict that the tech would need to be fail safe. Petrol can also be incredibly dangerous, but the number of incidents is tiny compared to the millions of cars carrying 60 litres of the highly combustible liquid day in day out. As with petrol engines, as electric vehicles develop over the decades so will the safety systems around them. Cheers Richard

I have one big issue with all these suvs. All of them have way too much technology. They are over stuffed with unnecessary crap. No one needs a heated steering wheel or heated seats or most of the other gizmos. They have all lost what they are meant to do which is be good a being a car! Not a computer on wheels. Also I despair at all car reviewers these days focused on bloody screens. They are all way too distracting & pointless in my view. As a mechanic all of these cars will develop electronic gremlins it’s a fact. they are pain in the rear end to try & fix stupid electronic issues because of all the stupid computer modules. If anyone needs a blind spot monitor or lane keeping assist to help driving then they are a crap driver. No one needs this stupid tech I turn all of these systems off I can’t stand them.
