Ticketmaster fee's are what's killing ticket prices. I actually don't mind paying $30-$70 for 300 seats in Tampa, but then i pay ~$30 in fees, that part hurts the most.

Very true. I just got into going to hockey games this year (didn’t make enough back in 2018) but covid restrictions didn’t get lifted at the caps stadium until this season. I have horrible eye sight so I try getting tickets for upper 100 - 300. Even those tickets are like $180 after fees 🤨 I go to the stadium and it’s at like 50% capacity while playing good teams

I only buy aftermarket tickets here and there anymore. I hated paying 4500 for 2 season tickets in section 212 in season 1 for the VGK. But season 2 my same seat was 7k. I passed. We paid about 150 for season parking or about 15 per game otherwise.

They were selling out games deep into that drought. It was basically right after Covid people with season tickets for decades gave them up. There used to be a cap on season tickets and it cost money just to be on the waiting list. Last year was the first time in over a decade that I bought a ticket on the official Sabres site. Stub hub was how blue collar people in a city of 260k people could afford 41 games a year. They relied on selling some. The Bills play 8 home games. It was that team of Hall, Jack and Skinner costing 30 million by themselves combined and losing 18 games in a row. So people made it kind of political with Pegula like “I’m not renewing because I’m watching a team on random Tuesday nights lose 3 to 1 when I have work at 8am? And I need to be vaxed now?” People just got mad. It did not prove anything other than just looking like a bad market. If Pegula was not the owner Tom would have sold them and the Bills and Sabres would not be in Buffalo currently. I am completely convinced of that.

@@axe2grind244 I lived in Buffalo in a nice area from 2015 to 2019. My 2 bedroom beautiful hardwood apartment was $850 a month when I moved in. That was included utilities. They only raised it by $10 every year too. What other NHL city is that possible for an area you can walk at night? Then I bought a house for under 300k in the suburbs. It’s 3 bedrooms in Amherst. Just needed to put 10k into it for a fix up. Tickets in any league Buffalo plays in are normally on the cheaper side, but the cost of living is so low. A good 4 wheel drive car is also a must in this area because we get more than 90 inches of snow a year.

I’m one of those 4,000 fans the Hurricanes added. I went from a casual hockey fan (only really watched the playoffs) to a full season ticket holder that watches NHL games every night. Under Rod, this is a very fun team to root for. And Raleigh has really embraced the Canes in recent years. I never used to see Canes gear around town, now I see it every day. I’m sure it helps that the Raleigh area is one of the fastest growing parts of the US. More people simply means more fans in the building. But it’s way more than that. There has been a noticeable shift in the city’s support for the Canes. It’s been great to see.

The city's population growth has mostly come from tax migration away from the Northeast. Many of those groups have significant allegiances to teams such as the Bruins, the Rangers, the Penguins, the Flyers, and the Sabres. Outside of those particular games, they don't really contribute that much to overall fan attendance. What has shifted the needle is the long period of winning hockey games starting with the 2018-2019 season. Like the vast majority of sports teams, if they win, they will come.

One thing I will say for Seattle: they do a GREAT job encouraging people to come to the games. You get free public transit with tickets (monorail and bus), the monorail is decorated in Kraken colors, and has gone from slowly dying to being full every game day (they renovated it, too). The monorail stops at the Armory, which has food, drink, performances, and a team store, and it’s always bustling before and after games (it was also slowly dying before the Kraken showed up), and it’s a one minute walk from there to the arena. On top of that, there’s also a parking garage nearby. The traffic before and after games is, of course, horrendous, but free travel options are plentiful. The Kraken make games very accessible, and have done a great job of supporting local infrastructure that had been struggling. They have been great for the city, and hockey programs in general have seen a massive increase in interest since they showed up. Inside the arena and out, they have the city’s support.
@chrisguardiano6143

As someone who lives in Seattle, I wonder what will happen to the Kraken's support when & if the NBA decides to bring back the Sonics. This is something to think about as one of the major reasons why the arena was built (in addition to bringing the Kraken into the NHL) was to bring the NBA back. There are many people that want the Sonics to come back which could erode some of the Kraken's support. However there are also some who were so hurt by how the Sonics left town in 2008 to become the OKC Thunder that they stopped watching the NBA entirely & later became Kraken fans. In my view Seattle can provide excellent support to both the Kraken & the revived Sonics.

@@johnnyc.31 I think the city can it's just that the long legacy basketball has in Seattle will play a significant role in what happens to the Kraken's support when & if the Sonics return. Before they were moved in 2008, the Sonics were the best supported team in the city & were often in the top 10 for attendance in the NBA. Of course if the Kraken are doing well on the ice & being competitive with a few playoff appearances, then that will encourage the fans to continue to support the team. However if things start to nosedive, I could see a situation in which the average sports fan in Seattle stops going to games & focuses their attention on the Sonics. This then leads to only the die hard fans being at games & attendance takes a hit. I think the current strategy the Kraken has for building for the future will help them in a Sonics return scenario.

As a lifelong Wings fan who spent a few years in Columbus, Nationwide Arena in Columbus is the best all around place to watch a game in my experience. Five dollar parking right across the street - even when the Wings are in town - a nice rink with great food and beer selection, and the hit to the wallet is a lot smaller than most places. One hundred bucks gets two people parking, cheap seats, a massive pile of good poutine, and a tall beer each. Fun team, too. Count Laine's controlled entries some time, among other things.

Little-known fact: Columbus is a top-15 U.S. city population (bigger than San Francisco) and 32nd U.S. metro area population (bigger than Nashville, San Jose, and Cleveland). So part of it is the need to do better in Central Ohio in general. That said, I agree they should try to capitalize on drawing fans from all over Ohio. I think they can be both Columbus's team and Ohio's team. It's a fine line to walk, but it is feasible for sure, especially when the team name so blatantly harkens to statewide heritage. Ohio is a good hockey state, just needs to pry fans away from the Penguins and Wings more--there is precedent with OSU for sure. Tie the Penguins to the Steelers and Pitt and the Wings to the Tigers and U. Michigan. They also are the only pro team in town, a significant advantage that it feels like they still haven't fully attained. I guess it is possibly a college-sports-only city, akin to Miami, but I think a lot of it boils down to CBJ simply not winning enough, while also lacking true star power. The Jackets are clearly trying to rectify those; here's hoping it works well.

It speaks heavily to the product and new ownership. Canes had problems with a cash strapped owner and terrible GM for the longest time. That’s what sparked all the rumors THG mentioned. As soon as the product and ownership got better things did a 180. Raleigh wasn’t ever in question for it’s viability, nobody wanted to see a .500 hockey club with 0 prospects or care to get better. There’s been more upgrades to the arena and the team in the last 5 years than all the previous years combined. I would suspect with how GM Kevyn Adams is doing, Buffalo will see the same.

Something with the Sabres too is that a lot of season ticket holders in the past were from just over the border in Canada. So, one of things about New Jersey Devils fans is that we are the rebels. Growing up in New Jersey, so many of my friends were Rangers fans (I'd say the ratio was 1-to-1 where I lived, and I didn't even live close to NYC). Even to the south, so many people who live in New Jersey are Flyers fans. So, our market really mixes heavily with the Rangers and Flyers. On top of that, we had some rough years, with every year expecting a turnaround and being constantly disappointed. I think the disappointments since our Cup finals appearance just whittled attendance down. But I am hoping this recent run reignites the fan base. And I believe in what the owners are doing with this team. That said, we band of NJ Devils fans are as diehard as they come. What made Rogers Place more successful over the old Northlands Coliseum is its location. Northlands Coliseum was literally one train station away from Commonwealth Stadium, which would cause some clashing in terms of attendance on nights where both the Oilers and Eskimos (now called the Elks) were playing home games. Rogers Place is practically across the street from Grant Macewan's downtown campus, so students attending classes on that campus only need to walk a few metres to the arena. Alao, in large part of the Metro LRT line that comes out from underground behind the arena, students attending either the University of Alberta or the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology now have easier access to get to the arena on nights where they are able to buy tickets to Oilers or Oil Kings games. And as much as I like the design of the Saddledome in Calgary, I remember it being flooded a decade ago, around the time of the 2012 NHL lockout, showing its age. And the signs are there that Calgary needs a new arena, but I don't know where they plan on putting it once the agreement is put in place.

The best thing for the Arizona Coyotes is the new arena in Tempe. Most of their fan base and season ticket holders reside in the east and southeast part of the valley (Phoenix metro area). What really hurt the coyotes was when they had the arena built out west in Glendale in the early 2000s. The fans, me included, refused to drive out to Glendale for a weeknight game due to the traffic and distance. They also need to trade for Auston Matthews, a local kid from Scottsdale, to give the fans some local pride. The yotes did beat on the Maple Leafs last night!!!

Since Mr. Vinik purchased the team it's changed, in a good way. He pumped in millions (his $ not local tax revenue) to upgrade the facility and focused on the fan experience. Nashville's attendance staying consistently high doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I grew up in the area and watched the team in high school during my first hockey phase. Tennessee, or at least the Nashville area, is fiercely loyal to its pro teams. The Titans get most attention, of course, but the Preds aren't far behind. Tot well said. And the only reason the Preds nearly moved out of Nashville in the early 2000's had to do with not having at the time, a good ownership group with deep pockets. So despite not knowing much about hockey when they came on the scene, at least I give the sports fans of Nashville for trying to understand a 'new sport' for basically the entire Mid-South region of the United States. Now no chance the Preds will leave Nashville. As much as Bettman get criticized for having the NHL expand to the American "sun belt' only Atlanta has been the big failure.

It's nearly impossible to sell a ticket at face value for a game. Everyone around me is buying tickets at 75% off face value for each game. Weekday games are "sold out", but there are 25%+ empty seats of people who can't sell. The demand is just not here in Seattle. I think at the 3 year mark they are going to come to a stark realization that they milked their fans too hard and there isn't a reason to come back for the next round of season tickets. I'll just buy tickets off ticketmaster for 75% off like everyone else

In fact, one of the best hockey teams in terms of attendance for many years but as you said in your video, the city soured on the team with year after year of losing seasons, constant coaching changes, and a lackluster front office. People in a blue collar city could no longer justify at a minimum 50 dollar tickets, 20 dollar parking, 15 dollar beers among other costs for a losing product. The Sabres also made changes in the ticket sales department that upset season ticket holders, who didn’t renew. Factor in Covid for a couple years, and that’s where we stand currently. However, the culture is changing. GM Kevyn Adams has made some great trades and the team is just peppered with talent. Tage Thompson is becoming a star. There’s a huge youth movement in Buffalo and it’s starting to show promise. Sabres above .500 and currently highest scoring team in the league. Winning will fix attendance for sure, but Sabres fans need assurance first that the team has a consistent competitive product on the ice before we spend our hard earned money on the team.

Watch a home habs game this year at the bell center and you see 1/3 of the seats empty in the lower reds (the high price and best tickets). The fans are still waiting for the team to be better to buy. Habs used to have a streak of sold-out games for a couples of back-to-back seasons (422 consecutives games to be exact) FYI : a good ticket in the lower reds costs around 400$ CAD at the Bell center. Hockey being only the fourth sport in popularity in the U.S.A. (Perhaps fifth given the growth of soccer) the loss of gate receipts will be more severe for those at the end of the line. That attendance drop could get a lot worse over time. Advertising revenues have somewhat made up for the gate loss as global TV viewership is becoming the norm. The on-going trend of converting sport venues into gathering and entertainment centers should provide added financial stability, let alone cash flow. Some franchises are already a step ahead on others.

The big 4 sports do not include handicap assemble tickets (and 1 additional able bodied ticket for every handicapped seat to sit with them), additonal luxury box seats (most get say 15 for a box of 10), obstructed view, and stand room in the calculations of total occupancy seats but do count in total seats sold (and for black rules).

The real story of Buffalo's attendance is season ticket holders. Which it doesn't appear you mention here. Nightly game purchases do NOT float the boat in Buffalo, our market is simply too small. If we make it to the playoffs that place will be PACKED. And as long as the top line keeps up this level of play, expect season ticket sales to skyrocket in Buffalo for next season. Especially because Bills tickets are increasingly hard to come by. Great video!

NJ's biggest issue is the stadium is in the filthy, and dangerous city of Newark. It's not convenient, affordable, or family friendly. Northern NJ is also a major hub, and has a lot of variation of fans for different teams, including all the close by New York teams. I believe the Stadium should relocate south, closer to central Jersey, maybe close by PNC bank arts center, to correct the issues stated above, and make it more accessible to more of the fan base, people like myself who live at the shore, and find going up into Newark an expensive and frustrating experience. Not a good day trip up the garden state parkway for a 2 hour game.

One thing that must be realized is that the Mullet arena was dominated by away team fans at an alarming rate. I watched a ton of their games just out of curiosity, and it's sad that I seen so much opposing jerseys in such a small stadium.

I will never go to another NHL game ever. The Vegas Golden Knights took my 2 season tickets away from me after the two first seasons. They claim I didn't go to enough games. The owner is a greedy SOB.

As someone from buffalo I think it will take the Sabres being in the playoffs for people to get invested in the Sabres again. Most years the Sabres start having a good run and people start to get invested then they start to fall off so people get tired of investing in them

The last time they made the playoffs they did just the opposite. Pegula bought the team and that really sparked guys like Miller, Vanek, Ennis, Pominville, Roy etc and they got in after having the worst record in the NHL at the Holiday Freeze. Then they threw money at a miss matched group of guys and it took 12 years to recover.

I always thought that a decent chunk of Pens fans are primarily Steelers fans that show up only when the Pens are cup contenders. This data supports my presumption, though I agree that they would still do ok in rebuild years at this point. Another factor is as you say economic in that with economic downturns, many people in PIttsburgh need to move to where the jobs are. It explains why there are so many Pens fans in other buildings such as PNC Area in Raleigh for example.

Pittsburgh is absolutely a fickle market. I am concerned about the end of this era. They might do OK, but I think that's the best case scenario. To my understanding, Pittsburgh actually does pretty well economically. The late 20th century was brutal, but with the new millennium has come a 21st-century economy that revitalized the area to the point it's regularly named one of the country's most livable.

@@closethockeyfan5284 There is no doubt, the Crosby led mini dynasty of the late 2010's has created enough of a fanbase that after he retires, they are still in Western Pa. permanently. Also keep in mind, the Pens also extended into West Virginia and even parts of Northeast Ohio including Youngstown and Cleveland from what I seen in various sources online.

@@americangiant1003 They draw from a good radius in every direction, sure, but as someone who's been a season-ticket holder and lived in Pittsburgh across 20-some years, I assure you the fans are spoiled and entitled. I don't blame people for passing on buying tickets when the local team is bad, but they will tune out on TV too. The Pens will still get several thousand per game, and some folks will continue to follow on TV, but it'll be a steep drop. The Penguins won back-to-back Cups in 1991 and 1992, as well as the Presidents' Trophy in 1993 with a record win streak. They had the longest active playoff streak until it snapped in the early 2000s, driven by Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, and many other great players who didn't quite make the Hall. Lemieux, arguably the greatest hockey player ever, was on the team from 2000 to 2006, albeit injured a fair amount of time. What more could a faltering team ask for in drawing fans, and what makes this time different? People said the same thing before the ensuing dark age: "Pittsburgh is an established NHL market now. The fans will still support this team on TV and in the arena." They couldn't get people to buy tickets for literally $5 when it wasn’t a legitimate away fan base flooding Civic Arena. They struggled to even give away tickets. And people had a lot more free time and disposable income than now, when the tickets are exorbitant. Yinzers are even turning on the *Steelers*, now that they are on the downturn following the retirement of Roethlisberger. I know for sure that Millennials and Gen Z have grown up with the Pens as part of their identity, which should bode better for staying power, but that will go only so far. I presume ticket prices will not drop near the rates they plunged to in the early 2000s, and although Pittsburgh has a solid economy, young adults simply don't have the income or time in great enough numbers. By that very 2015-16 season, fans had already shown their fickleness. The Penguins had to discount or give away increasing numbers of tickets to maintain their sellout streak, which even with the juicing they could not maintain. This was once again (and remains to this day) the team with the longest active playoff streak in the league. Detroit became "Hockeytown" with its record playoff streak. Fans dramatically reduced their participation once the Wings finally started the overdue rebuild. Chicago, even with Kane still one of the most dynamic players in the game (among others whohave played with him even in loaing seasons), has had its issues despite one of the largest populations in the country. They are Surviving Six teams with a century-plus of history. Why on earth should Pittsburgh fare any better once the losing sets in, unless the lottery finds the Penguins yet again?

You can't use these numbers because teams report their ticket sales numbers as "attendance" and the two are not the same. I've been to "sold out" games where the arena was half full.

Nearly all of major sports are atrociously priced. The irony is they all try to cultivate this family atmosphere and value, but when it's $600+ for an average family of 4 for a night out, that's not realistic for the vast majority of north Americans, especially in this economy. Even in a healthy economy, that's realistically a once a year thing for a lot of people. But, it's also a trickle effect as athletes have reached God-like status in our culture. There's SO MUCH money involved and it ultimately stings the fanbase most.

Calgary does not need a new building. Edmonton may have a nicer newer arena and the best player, but they have had no real success. A new building does not generate hockey money, it costs money. The Saddledome is iconic and adds to the city skyline. The Saddledome has great sight lines and has been maintained. New building is a total waste of tax payer money. If they win as many Stanley Cups as Edmonton has, then I would consider it. Arena deals are based on crooked land deals with shady people.

i’m from minnesota, not alive yet in 1993 when it was announced that the northstars would relocate. my dad was in college, and it broke his poor heart. a microcosm of the feeling and anger shared by every other green-bleeding northstars fan in the state. i was born during the wild’s inaugural season (and i have an adorable photo of me as an infant wearing a wild onesie to prove it), so i didn’t get to witness the overnight sensation they became around here. apparently it was crazy, minnesotans were immediately rude-or-die with the franchise. i count it a privilege whenever i get to cheer for them in person. long live the hockey state. to conclude this comment, three final words: NORM GREEN SUCKS

Ryan not sure you follow other sports but Norm Green Sucks comments is mild to 2 other famous North American teams when they moved. One was when then Owner Walter O' Malley moved the Brooklyn Dodgers from suburban NYC to LA in MLB. And then Art Model moving in the Mid 90's the first Cleveland Browns to Baltimore in the NFL. Both Model and O'Malley got 'death threats' from their former fanbases in both Northern Ohio and Brooklyn/NYC respectively.

In Buffalo, I can see a few reasons... the long losing does not help... but as you said, they are playing well and look to be going up... then you get to the State putting so many covid restrictions on for so long that it's been hard to get people to go out... those have been lifted now, but they are still being felt... the worst though... there are not many employers left in buffalo. Unlike Detroit where that city got crushed by losing the auto industry... Buffalo has been on decline for decades and it's down now to only a few employers (even my own left.. forcing me to move)... so you have only government employees or a few others... I've heard from friends that it's not looking to get any better any time soon.
