Big difference that isn't mentioned here is that Classic press can handle 3.75" OAL loads (MANY rifle including 300wm) where the value press can only handle 2.31" OAL which means you'd have to disable auto indexing, taking a big feature away. I will be loading tall 30.06 rounds which means I can't effectively use the value press. Might be a reason to get classic alone.

I totally skipped over the clearance issue in the video. Your comment is excellent so I pinned it to the top. Thanks!

The problem is that the turret starts turning before the 30-06 seating die clears the seated bullet, so for me it’s not working with the 30-06. Still my favorite press I own though

@@RealMrSmit yep, so you need the classic which will work
@RealMrSmit

@@sofloemir I have the classic turret( I should have stated this in my comment), it’s the seating die that doesn’t clear the 30-06 cartridge before the turret turns. Maybe it would work if I’d screw the die out slightly and turn the adjuster in more as is was a matter of a 16th of an inch or so, but enough to jam the press up. So I use my classic turret only to load 223 and some handgun calibers and use my classic cast for 30-06 and up.
@RealMrSmit

@@sofloemir so I actually tested again and I can get the seating die to work but it’s the factory crimp die that jams up the press. Now I could take the cartridge out of the shellholder before the turret indexes, but that’s not my habit.

Great unbiased comparison. Smart move by Lee with the VT. They probably have a warehouse full of that linkage left over from their older value turret and are able to use it up with the bases for the new progressive press. Thanks mate. You've done a great comparison video here. There are a few "what was Lee thinking about", scenario's with the Lee Value Press. It's one thing to drop the quality of a couple things, but some changes look like they impinge on practicality, which has normally been one of Lee's selling points. Value and practical rolled into one.

A very helpful review. If the handle strikes the primer dispenser, loosen the handle bolt a little and slide the handle down in the clamp an inch or so for more clearance. I bought a Value turret press this week and find it a pleasure to use compared to my Pro 1000 which is fine when it's running right which it mostly isn't due to hang ups and too many things to watch at the same time.

I've never used the new value press but have owned a classic turrent press for many years. After probably 20 thousand of rounds of more, that huge ram,cast iron base and linkage are as tight as when they were new. No one is going to wear out the classic press in their lifetime. Loading both hand and rifle rounds I personally have never found I didn't have enough clearance in fact I think it has more clearance than my rockchucker. It also produces very good quality ammo. The only thing I would change in it is I find that 2 days ago when I loaded 250 rounds of 38 spl I would like to have a roller handle as the ball no longer has any varnish on it and tries to rub a blister in my hand.

I use a similar mounting system for my presses. My mounting plate is 1/2" aluminum, the same holes to mount to the bench. I have two places on my bench to mount presses with 3/8" tee nuts. To provide clearance for your primer catch tube, just drill new mounting holes in the base plate 3/4" further in from the existing ones. I have the new BL Pro 4000 progressive press that shares the same base plate and columns as the the value turret. The learning curve is about complete and I think it will work out to be a good purchase.... Thanks for sharing.

A reasonable, unbiased review. Almost a rarity these days. Thanks. I've been running the LCT for 8 years or so and LOVE it. I do use their very dependable and consistent Pro Auto Disk on the press. I've also added the great Inline Fabrication case kicker system to speed up output. The "value' press looks to me like NO bargain. Weaker mechanicals, cumbersome and fiddly operation, Over the long haul the cost difference is meaningless.

As always, very informative. So thanks. I know you've fashioned your own base system for changing out presses, but on my Harbor Freight oak workbench I've mounted Lee's bench plate system and use it with my two Lee presses and my Lee bench priming tool I use for rifle rounds. Can't say enough good things about the system. Rock solid, quick to mount and unmount. I have the plate on the far right corner of the bench. So with the Classic Turret I sit slightly to the left of press and that opens up access to the shell holder. I think like you once mentioned, given the current quantities I load, I'll stay with my LCT and not move to a progressive press.

I will be ordering the Lee classic turret press possibly today or tomorrow and some ACT extra turrets and some die sets and everything else that I may need does that new primer loader that you were using on the economy version work on the classic turret press? And any kind of advice you could give me would be great. Thank you, David Wright.

They are still available at Gunstreamer.com, TheReloadersNetwork.com and UGETube.com under the same handle TreeTopFlier. I cant even link to them because that is what they call "meta data". I can afford other presses but I really like the Lee Classic Turret. I like that it auto advances unlike the Redding T7 etc. and it is fast enough that I can make several hundred rounds in a short time and still just make one at a time. I'm not a high volume shooter so it meets my needs.

Love your videos. I have a Lee Classic Turret and after thousands of rounds I don't understand why you would ever pay more or need to pay less. That said, I also have a Lee Breech Lock Challenger press I use for decapping and rifle loads. But obviously, I could do those tasks on the turret press. Having dealt with Lee for some replacement parts I can't say enough about them. And I watch KZfaq videos of other presses, including progressive presses, and just don't see any advantage over the production I can do with the LCT.

I have come full circle. I got the Lee presses because they were economical. I assumed that it was a compromise and you would get better results from the high end, more expensive gear. As my skills progressed I have found that all the things you can quantify in terms of consistency are well withing the range of high quality on the Lee press. The only thing that I think you benefit substantially from in a high precision O frame press is consistent shoulder setback resizing options.

I've used the Classic Turret Press for years. This new Value Press looks like it'd be okay, but kinda' needs a custom lever arm to get the hands away from the primer feed and such. Interesting powder towers... I use the Lee Auto Disk powder feeder, which works well for me. I'm guessing yours allows finer adjustment of powder throw? I do sometimes have to compromise between one hole being a little less than I want, and the next being a bit too much.

Hi TreeTop, great video. I just saw a video of a guy saying why he doesn't use a powder measure mounted on the turret. He states and backs with testing data which shows the vibration from not only the press operations, but the rotation from the turret itself causes the powder to compress some causing inaccurate powder drops. I use the Lee auto drum and get a high or 2/10s grains (@25 grain drop) or a low by 2/10s. I wonder of you created your powder measure stand for this reason? And if so, where can one acquire your stands?
@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier Жыл бұрын
I created the stand for several reasons. I never liked the weight of the powder measure riding the lee turret press. Its smoother without it. I wanted more consistent throws and dispensing is more accurate with some powders. I used a lot of H110 powder and it leaks from the autodrum pretty bad. I watched his video and his methodology was sound. The only thing I thought was a weak point is he was moving the handle way too fast in his demonstration in both situations. He was speeding way too fast through the drop portion of the rotation. Not sure all the powder was making it out of the metering chamber before he shut it off. Yes I know he did it the same but still.... And yes it could be assumed that the movement of the turret would compress the powder and give a heavier load. Consistency of handling is key.
@davespin9034
@davespin9034 Жыл бұрын
@@TreeTopFlier Yes, he did move way too fast, was kinda ridiculous! And the classic turret press uses the auto index which is pretty smooth. And I also agree, the Auto Drum does add some weight. I have been loading .223 using Winchester 748 also I'm not leaking, but will be using the H110 soon with a different caliber. Your system is very cool.

Just remark about the spring in your bench.. this is a general thought not direct to your case.. as you used real wood top you are now bolting with grain which is where the spring comes from as the grain in the wood itself is flexing. For anyone building a purpose built reloading station my advice would be to string your boards front to back so you are cross grain making the boards stiffer. Unless you have a full wood shop to joint and plane the lumber the boards are cupped and this only further enhances with grain tension. All of this is solved by changing from a typical cross top design to a front to back arrangement. You can then have plenty of overhangs still if you want depending on the thickness and width of the boards. The people running the basic 2x cross beam are most likely using plywood tops and not lumber so they have to have something to support out to the edge or it would just snap off.

Quick question, I noticed your classic turret press rotates ccw, like mine, most show it turning cw on utube, which allows attaching "auto ejector" on the rod to push round into a bin after crimping. CCW won't allow that. Any idea how to change spin to CW? To really take advantage of the function of the press, it can be useful to preform most of the functions on the press. I like to prime on press, and the new lee safety prime levers are awesome. The lee autodrum powder measure is also very good. The Lee modern reloading is a good book as a starting point. The lee powder scale is functional but a little too fiddly IMO. I like having a mechanical scale but if I was buying my first it would be the Lyman electronic micro 1500 scale. The kit is not a bad idea. But you can shop the press and the three items I mentioned purchased individually and save some coin. You may want to check out my minimalist reloading series if your just getting started.

Not sure exactly what your asking but. The powder measure is mounted in stands I designed and built. They use the press mounting hardware to mount to the bench so they do not take up any room. Check instagram for #TTFpowderstand or the video in the pinned comment if you want to know more.

@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier 6 жыл бұрын
"have to" I would say never. Your rounds will work just fine if you clean or not. If you are shooting for accuracy reducing irregularities is a key to accuracy, so most folks are going to uniform the primer pocket so cleaning would be a part of that.

Very nice comparison. Lee screwed up on the primer tube on this press and the breech lock pro as you have to cut a wedge out of your table to accommodate the tube. Your handle keeps hitting the primer system. I like my classic turret but would not recommend the "value " to anyone.

Sorry Im not making these anymore. I made hundreds of them in my garage but it got to be too much. The final nail in the coffin was the Biden administration requiring tax id information for PayPal and other payment services. I have no problem paying taxes but I am not in a situation where I can itemize so I would eat all costs as profit. I have no desire to start a business at this time to keep from paying taxes on costs. Thanks for your interest though. I have a video on the channel I left of so people could figure out their own version.

If you were loading precision rounds with lets say 6.5 creed or 308 etc what press is making more consistent ammo with less runout and less COL differences?
@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier 4 жыл бұрын
I have to be honest. I have loaded perfect rounds on the Value turret press. There is so much hype about quality, cost and presses. Overtime I have come to believe that presses all do the same thing. As long as the angles are square (90deg) and aligned, Its hard to tell one press from another. Most of your Col variation is in the bullet ogive. Your die push pin has an inverted cone that fits the bullet, so variations in depth are usually because of variance in how the die fits the bullet. Since the die push pin stays the same, variance is mostly caused by irregularity in the bullet. All this assuming the ram stops in a repeatable position, which is usually the case. The other variable attributed to the press is concentricity. But again, as long as the press runs square, the source of concentricity is more about the die and even the brass itself. There are things that make a great press. Access, Leverage, smoothness, are all things that can be attributed to a quality press. So to answer your question. I think both presses are capable of making great ammo. I think the Classic is more pleasurable to use, since it feels tighter and smoother but those are things that do not effect quality of ammo.

@@TreeTopFlier Great explanation, thank you, I have a challenger and loadmaster and auto breech lock pro, I still want a turret and was thinking about if there was any real advantage or quality in ammo produced over the older classic cast, but you convinced me the classic cast is worth the extra money just on feel alone,

I have both presses. Classic is easily superior. And where the value press really falls short is decapping and priming. If you are decapping and priming off press, the value line works fine. But if priming on press, and even more decapping on press, seriously consider the classic.
@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier 2 жыл бұрын
I usually decap on a small press then clean the brass. I tend to load hand gun cartridges on the Value and medium size high volume on cartridges on the classic. I use the on press priming on the value press and it works fine for me. I still drop a primer now and then but its acceptable to me. Thanks for the comment.

Why buy the Lee Value Press when the classic press is only $5 more. You get a lot more press with the Classic. I don't know why Lee keeps selling the Value Press at that little price difference on Amazon on 11/18.

Bench plate fixed the primer Collection tube issue for me

They supposedly changed the ram so the primer tube fits to the bottom like the classic after 2018. Is yours like that or did the plate just give enough clearance?
@Jutilaje
@Jutilaje 4 жыл бұрын
I've got the new style value press I believe (ordered it direct from Lee around 2 months ago) and the tube still attaches on the back side of the ram. It wasn't a huge issue for me before because the desk it's mounted to isn't that thick, but if I ran the entire stroke it would interfere some. The bench plate didn't really push the press out further on it's own, but it made it so that I didn't need to index the press on the edge of the desk to make it square - the bench plate's holes keep the press square to the plate, and then the plate automatically squares itself up on the mount. So I was able to mount the press a bit further forward with it than without it.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I loaded up some 223 on the Value press after I did this video and they were near perfect concentric and the overall length was +- .002 or so. One question that I would want to know is how long a shell and projectile it will take. With the older 4 hole turret version, they had identical looking models. However the "value" version was about 3/4" shorter. I don't think this saved a meaningful length of stroke for speeding up pistol ammo, but it was enough that loading 308 allows the next die to strike the bullet as the turret indexes. The only solution is to sort of shuffle the bullet up into the seating die rather than place it on top of the cartridge. What a nuisance. I would steer everyone away from the short version.

Coudn't you brace the end of the table with with 2x4 under the lip the width of the side of the table top, and remove your metal brace under the front edge? i think overall you would get less press movement due to more effective bench bracing and less flexing, and solve your primer tube clearance issue. I did that to my value turret mounting and really happy with the press.
