From 2020 to now, this is what the house has turned into. Coupled with sprinkles of living in a constant state of renovations, we're looking back on the past year and more with renovation regrets, joys, and future ideas. I've changed my mind on quite a lot! In partnership with Samsung Canada, here are smart home features that have helped us live more sustainably, and managed our energy usage through the SmartThings App: bit.ly/3v241MC

I like you talking about “keeping the home’s charm”. I have a sea foam green bathtub and sink which I use to HATE but didn’t have the $$$ to change it. Now that I’m closer to having the $$$ to update the bathroom, I’m going to keep the sea foam green and lean into its style to make the bathroom quirky. It’s grown on me and now I love the unique look!

This is so relatable. As a new homeowner myself I struggle a lot with renovation and what I can afford. Seeing all those people transforming their houses to perfectly staged homes in just a few weeks/ months is not very helpful. So thank you for being real . 💖

I also wish you had kept the wooden parquet flooring. Surrounding ourselves with wood and other natural surfaces and objects is always healthier and better for our mental health than putting in new vinyl surfaces and other synthetic things. But, live and learn, right? I'm so glad you kept the yellow tile in the bathroom. If things in our homes are in decent shape and condition, and they serve their purpose, shouldn't we keep them instead of installing the latest fashion, which will be out of fashion in 5 years anyway? That is not only more economical but also better for the planet. I try to only replace things that are broken or otherwise not functional for the way we live today. I really hope more people will embrace the old fashioned parts of their homes so that we will have heritage in our housing.

You mentioned not liking your lighting I really recommend getting eco smart bulbs, just changing your light tone can be so dramatically altering for a room. I’m disabled and being able to control them from one spot is awesome as is changing them to red when I have a migraine. Some even have hue programs you can set to suit your needs. It’s a cheap thing in comparison to a lot of your list but I think being able to light to your mood will help even those areas you are frustrated with feel more finished. I have one other tip and that is try and buy second hand storage . A lot of people will save jars for example and put them for free collection or minimal cost. Screw the lids into a piece of timber and you have sturdy hanging storage … you often see it used for storage of nails screws etc… but with a dash of spray paint to get it into a cohesive look additions of ribbon labels … it also is really good for storing office odds and ends under a shelf and because it’s painted it hides unsightly collections of those things you need to keep but just can’t find a great space. Other areas I think these work is for hair accessories like ties, grips. Holding lip balms and other make up bits you always need to add to your bag but clutter up, small jars are awesome for Jewellery, false nails … if you have a sewing area with a shelf store ribbon, elastic, needles, pins… in them. There’s so many things you can use a hanging jar storage system for and because they hang below a shelf you can easily camouflage them or make them into a statement piece. If your feeling very fancy you can recess the lids into the shelf. One other suggestion is if you occasionally need hands free additional lighting in a area full a jar with £/$\€ … fairy lights that run off battery’s and presto a hanging light. I personally love the hexagonal jars you can get for jam making off Amazon as they stack together nicely in a cupboard or can give a honey comb look which brings me to my second jar storage tip using a strong hot glue/glass glue or ultraviolet resin stick hexagonal jars together to get a honey comb pattern or even a large hexagon, (note if you want them opaque paint them before gluing) once they are firmly held together lie them on their side like a bottle rack , you can keep the lids on or have some on none on, but it makes a really good free standing organiser which can be sealed (or even used for small plants/flowers basically whatever you fancy). You can easily theme it to your home or season by adding a band of paper or ribbon around it, paint it… I think it also looks good painted with a metallic colour. Square jars also work but round jars really need a good strong glue to hold them as there is less contact surface. Tins are also amazing for storage you can pick them up second hand or very cheaply new. Spray paint or decorate to your desired look and label. You can get all sorts of shapes and sizes. I recommend going for shapes that will stack easily to the side or on top as storage space is always at a limited amount. One use I have liked these for is earring storage just add a card with punched holes (a wool needle, awl, metal skewer, pencil all work well just put your card above a piece of foam or a ball of wall tax/play dough/ clay… so you don’t damage anything beneath) slot in your earrings and close , you can add as many layers as you can/want and easily sort into style, theme… If using tins and stacking label on the side that will face you on a shelf or if lifting them out as a stack from a draw, Old tins can get rusty so try cleaning with screwed up aluminium or re spray using a anti rust or enamel spray (I will though add if you buy a vintage tin in good condition do first check it’s not s collectors item before decorating) My final tip is for temporary piles they can so easily get you down, try and assign them to one area per space and neatly stack them so pets/humans or ghosts don’t go knocking them over. And if you have a surprise visit from that nosey judgmental Karen/Kevin in your life cover them with a vintage tablecloth/sheet/throw and put beside them a couple choice items so it looks like you are mood boarding a project not actually hiding a pile of stuff (its also a really good idea to keep a couple of large opaque lidded storage boxes to bung in unsightly heaps of washing/projects not only do they help disguise your to do piles it makes sorting them easier as you can move to the location you need it quickly and stop a bit of the procrastination you get when you need to go back and forth several times to move that project/to sort/put away… heap) Finally always have a dedicated box for charity, recycling, future projects that is easy to access and add too as this helps preorder a lot of our piles. I hope these ideas help or give someone inspiration like you have given me with this channel. I hope you have a fabulous festive season an awesome 2024 xxx

I found you when you did the collab @withwendy. Trying to decorate, organize and just everyday living in a house is a lot of work. I bought a way too big house and I was overwhelmed everyday. It was not a happy time. Take it 1 day at a time. For your bedroom, you could do enclosed ikea wall closets. Then, you could customize it with shelves and drawers.

And proud you should be, despite small (or big) unfinished touches 👍👍👍 About seating many guests comfortably, I've simply given up on the idea of living room entertainment. Whenever I have guests over, it all revolves around eating and drinking anyway and so I converted the space I have into a dining room, and a fancy one for that. (Fancy doesn't mean expensive, because... Ebay... 😁) It works! No one ever missed the large living room area, I live alone and have my reading nook, no TV, it's great that way 😀 Thanks for the honest video 👍❤️
