For 2022, both the Mazda CX-5 and the Nissan Rogue received new updates. One of them is bigger than the other, I admit. But in a previous video comparing the two, I said that the CX-5 was the compact SUV to get. Do I arrive to the same conclusion in this one?
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is available with two engine options. Well, technically it’s the same engine but with or without a turbocharger; and of course a few other changes to accommodate the turbo. This top spec Signature CX-5 has the turbocharger. It is a 2.5L 4-cylinder and it can produce 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque (167 kW & 420 Nm) when it is running on regular octane fuel. If you use premium fuel, this engine produces 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque (191 kW & 434 Nm). For the 2022 model year, it gets those extra 6 hp.
For 2022, the Nissan Rogue receives a brand new 3-cylinder turbocharged engine. The new engine is capable of producing 201 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque (150 kw & 305 Nm). Those figures are reached at 5,600 & 4,000 rpms respectively. With the Nissan Rogue typing the scales at 1,689 kg (3,723 lbs), this little engine has plenty of grunt to get the SUV moving.
The starting price of the Mazda CX-5 2022 GX is $30,500 CAD ($26,250 USD, S trim). This fully loaded Signature trim costs $43,650 CAD ($39,000 USD) excluding paint and accessory options.
The Nissan Rogue 2022 starts at $29,498 CAD ($27,150 USD) but, here in Canada, this still has the old 2.5L engine. In order to get the new 1.5L 3-cylinder, you have to move up to the SV trim which starts at $36,098 CAD ($28,840 USD, FWD). This top spec Platinum trim costs $42,748 CAD ($38,430 USD, AWD). In the United States, all trim levels have the new 3-cylinder engine.

I love the style of your reviews: Calm, collected, informative, and they feel honest. Keep doing these comparisons, they are so helpful. I'm hoping to find a good hybrid SUV soon... but Nissan gets pretty decent MPG without a hybrid. I really wish they would introduce a plug-in hybrid for the Rogue. I think Mazda CX 50 will have a hybrid in a few years.

Thank you! I know that the upcoming CX-90 and CX-70 for the North American market is supposed to have a hybrid powertrian so it wouldn't be too farfetched for Mazda to introduce a hybrid pwoertrain for the CX-50 sometime in the next few years.

I live in Colorado and have to do a ton of mountain driving and terrible pot hole filled road driving. I recently got a 2022 signature turbo CX-5 and I absolutely love it. The cx-5 makes driving through the mountains extremely enjoyable. The torque really shines in the steep mountain passes. The infotainment system takes a little getting used to but it’s really outstanding. You can control everything easily with one hand. It’s very much like learning how to use keyboard. They key is to not henpeck like a 90 year old typing for the first time.

I agree the infotainment system works well on its own. Its when you start to use CarPlay or Android Auto does the non-touchscreen controls become frustrating. I believe the new CX-50 re-introduced the touchscreen when the car is stationary like the older generation Mazda infotainment system.

The Rogue is way more comfortable. Easily the best seats in the segment. If I were offered either for a cross country trip, I would take the Rogue. But for the same price, I would buy the CX-5 for the fun drive, reliability and resale value.

I agree with this! I've always found the CX-5 to be a bit... TUBBY... I actually think the CX-30 looks better, but it's too small for actual PASSENGERS. I don't love the front-end on the Rogue, but profile & rear views are good. I had the Rogue as a rental for a month this summer, so I really got to know it. Prior to this, I might not have ever considered the Rogue (I have a Mazda3, and am already in the Mazda camp). But, DRIVING the Rogue, for an extended period like that, taxiing my elderly parents around, it was surprisingly good! Very practical. If I were buying just for MYSELF (living in the city), I'd probably go with a CX-30, but for me & my parents: Rogue.

Personally, I think the current Nissan CVTs (at least the ones in the global versions, not sure if you get something different over there...) are among the best transmissions out there. There is nothing out there that is that smooth, fast and adaptive. Especially in conjunction with Nissans 4x4i, this is a joy to use in the mountains or in snowy conditions.

Look up Nissan CVT Transmission issues and I was not impressed with a rental with only 20200 miles. They are well known with CVT issues so keep that in mind. As far as there new 1.5 liter Turbo Engine it has not been proven and I would personally would not trust it until it is proven for a few years. I like what Nissan did with the 2022 Rogue. What worries me is Nissan reliability and dealerships. I used to own a Nissan Maxima. I loved the car itself as a highway cruiser and its excellent handling literally saved my life by avoiding a highway crash. But it had all kinds of reliability gremlins, especially with the transmission, which blew up while on a vacation trip at only about 40,000 miles. That was bad, but what was worse was the routinely awful service from Nissan dealerships. I went around for years trying to find a Nissan dealership I could trust. Never found one. Eventually traded in that Maxima for a Honda Accord that gave me 200,000 miles of trouble free driving. I’ve been driving for over three decades and I’ve owned cars from most brands. By far the worst experience was with Nissan. So while the updated Rogue looks very interesting, it also is worrisome. New turbo engine with new variable compression technology and CVT (has Nissan solved the problem of their CVTs dying prematurely?). How reliable will this combination be over years of ownership?
@MGReviewsBlog
@MGReviewsBlog Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your owner's insight! I unfortunately only get to drive these cars for a week so I can't comment on their reliability. That said, Nissan said that they updated the CVT for the 2022 model year. Whether it made it more reliable is yet to be seen.
@adamesd3699
@adamesd3699 Жыл бұрын
@@MGReviewsBlog It’s possible that the updated CVT is more reliable, at least initially. At Edmunds, customer review ratings for the 2021 Rogue average 3.2 out of 5, while the customer ratings for the 2022 average 4.4. That’s a very big and unusual jump from one year to the next. And the reviews are very different. For the 2021 model, the reviews are full of complaints about the transmission, the car dying in middle of the road, the car has been in the shop for the last two weeks, etc. For the 2022, the comments are almost all how much the owners like their new Rogues. So yeah, maybe Nissan fixed a lot of reliability issues with the Rogue.
