In this video I am comparing 4 different 1.1 Stub nibs. These are
- Kaweco Sport + Dominant Industry Lungo ink
- TWSBI Eco + Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-Ryoku ink
- Retro 51 Tornado Antique Copper + Diamine Vintage Copper ink
- Leonardo Furore + Diamine Earl Grey ink

I own a TWSBI Eco 1.1 and a Lamy Safari 1.1. TWSBI has worked really well out of the box and Lamy needed some tuning since it was too dry. I now enjoy both of them pretty much equally. I use Eco for lighter inks that look a lot more interesting in the clear barrel and I use my Lamy 1.1 for darker inks.

great video,i'm getting to like stubs and have a few here but i bought a narwhal recently with a 1.1 stub and when i measured it it is actually 1.55mm, so as you would imagine it lays alot of ink down, too much really so may try and narrow it down

i love how you match the inks up to the pens! i've bought different coloured inks over the years but truly i'm a black ink enthusiast, you just cant improve upon perfection 😅

Thanks. I enjoy playing around with colour combinations. I do get evil stares from my wife when I use inks that are not a colour match, like when I put a brown ink in a blue pen.

i also like stub, but since I write small, my favorite is the pilot calligraphy fine and calligraphy medium nibs..they add character to my otherwise uninteresting penmanship..

My first 1.1 nib was attached to a Lamy Studio. Wasn't sure I would like it, but, Wow! Really nice. I now have two other pens with stub nibs. One has a Goulet branded Jowo nib while the other has a generic Jowo. While I've noticed that the line width is often dependent on the ink, in my experience, the Lamy 1.1 stub writes just a hair narrower than the Jowo. I'd be interested if anyone else has observed this as well.

Great video. I have mostly stubs so just want to say that within brands not all stubs are the same... inconsistencies happen. I have too fairly dry TWSBIs (for a stub) and my Lamys, from the stainless to the black ones, are very different. I rarely go over 1.1 but the nice thing about Lamy is I have a couple of 1.5 and 1.9s and it is nice to be able to slip them off and exchange them. Also, I cannot remember which brand has 1.0 stubs... but they are great for those who are nto quite sure about stubs.

I have two or three Twisbi pens, all of which I like. I do not recall whether I have a 1.1 stub on any of the Twisbi pens (the truth is I discovered I have at least 4, if not 5 Twisbi Fountain Pens, so I have not checked a couple. The other truth is I will not buy another, but I might by the 1.1 nib unit! Again, as I said in my earlier post, this comparison was a tremendous idea. It even brought out that nibs made by the same manufacturer may be tuned different by some vendors. You’ve got me reconsidering some things. For example, I had bad experiences with Bock nibs in two or three pens I bought early in the hobby. I have avoided them ever since. Now I wonder if I should be partially blaming the vendor or fountain pen manufacturer rather than the nib maker. Thanks again! KW

I would not rule out any pen for having a Bock, Jowo or Schneider nib. They are all good quality.
@GarryEves

I've got to be honest I generally don't notice much difference between nibs, apart from when doing videos like this where I try to be more attentive. The only real issue I have had with a Bock nib was when I put it into a Narwhal Schuylkill and I don't think it was an exact fit. The nib would creak whenever I wrote with it. Replacing the nib with a Jowo one fixed that.

I reckon the ink in the retro 51 is dryer. Try any pilot iroshizuku in it and see if you still have the same issue. I love Earl Grey but even that can have a dry flow sometimes.

I have an eco, safari, and multiple jowo #6 stubs. The jowo #6 is often scratchy unless you have a really wet ink. I like to use Kon peki. The eco is probably the wettest and most dependable. I love the safari 1.5 over the 1.1 and use Diamine oxblood which is a drier ink.

Great video. Last pen rotation I inked only stubs. Lamy 1.1, Pilot CM on the metro, TWSBI 1.1 and the Kaweco 1.5. For me the 1.5 was a bit too broad for everyday writing. But I really couldn’t choose an overall favourite on the others. For me the TWSBI was the wettest writer of the three. So I preferred that some days. Others I just loved the Lamy. But the pilot was notable as well. I guess for a fair comparison I should have inked them with the same ink. But where’s the fun in that? 😂

I like the idea of using the same nib size for a month, I've added it to my list of potential Pens In Use themes for next year. I agree about the use of ink, I would find it boring using the same ink for a month, I love being able to change colours on a daily basis.

This was a really good idea, Garry! I have always wondered about the performance o 1.1 nibs on other pens. The first one I had on a fountain pen was a Taiwanese made fountain pen. Since then I have equipped one pen with a 1.1 mm stub made by Jowo, but i just guessed. You are giving us some solid comparisons. Thank you!

Very interesting, thank you. Is it possible that the fat lines with the TWSBI were affected by the wetness of that ink? (I don’t blame you for not wanting to clean out all these pens and put one kind of ink in them “for science,” I wouldn’t have either.) Similarly, the Retro 51 may have been too dry to show its full width clearly.
@GarryEves
@GarryEves 6 ай бұрын
It's definitely a possibility, but I do find that the TWSBI does tend to be a bit wetter than the rest.

1. They all look good to me. It is my crackpot theory that stubs are easier to manufacture, and hence reasonably dud-free. 2. For normal writing, I think .8mm - 1.5mm is the usable range, amongst which I am fond of the 1.0mm.

I hate to ruin your theory but I have a FPR Darjeeling with their stub nib and it's been nothing but trouble. When I first got it, I was getting hard starts and skiping. After some back and forth with customer service, they sent another unit. I appreciated that. Though it's better, it still skips and hard starts sometimes. Also it's very wet and very hard to get good line variation when it is working. On the other hand, I have a Kaweco Perkeo with a 1.1 stub nib that writes wonderfully. I've concluded that FPR Ultra Flex nibs are awsome but their stub nibs... not so much.

@GarryEves
@GarryEves Жыл бұрын
@@tinovillalovas Certainly not ruining my theory. One of the things I'm trying to do with videos is to kickstart conversations like this to allow for a deeper exploration. The only FPR pens I have are standard nibs. They are not too bad, but also not something that I get too excited over. I did have an FPR flex nib but struggled with it, but I struggle with all flex nibs.
@tinovillalovas
@tinovillalovas Жыл бұрын
@@GarryEves I appreciate your sentiment. I have the Ultra Flex nib in two pens; one with a 6 and another in a 5 sized nib. I have to admit I'm still not fully comfortable with them. I need more practice. Nevertheless, I believe I can still feel the "goodness" of them, if that makes sense. My FPR Jaipur V1 is the one with the 5 sized Ultra Flex nib is one of my favorite pens to write with. The smaller size keeps it from getting too crazy and a light touch gives you a fine line. Admitedly it can be a challenge to keep the line as a perfectly consistent fine line, but that's the beauty of it for me. It adds just a bit of flair to my writting. Perhaps not exactly what a flex nib if for but but the kind of distintictiveness it offers when using it like that works well for me.

I think the name Jowo is pronounced "Yo Vo". I have been interested in stubs but have avoided them. I tend to rotate my nib around when I write. I am worried the the nib would not work properly and would scratch the paper. Are the edges sharp? If three of the nibs are Jowo and they have such line variation, there are other reasons for the variation. I know Leonardo tunes the nib. I am not sure about TWSBI. I am doubtful if Retro 51 does any tuning. I do not know about Kaweco. I am thinking that the feed may play a part with the nib performance. I am sure the feeds may not be the same with the Jowo nibs. It is also possible the inks alter the line widths. As an aside, Siri is a feminine voice except in Germany where it is male.
@GarryEves

I'm working on a similar video, which will be more of a series of videos, long at Broad nibs. They'll be coming out in November. I am seeing similar results where the nibs from Jowo seem to perform differently based on the manufacturer. The series is going to be comparing nibs from manufacturers in the same country, then a final video comparing the winning pen from each country. I usually have Siri set to Britsh male voice. I really should change it to use the Australian voice though.
