"Why don’t more FP makers have stub nibs as part of their lineup? Sigh.
I know, right?
I run into this a lot, especially with manufacturers outside the US
stubs are more popular in the US, I think, so some manufacturers aren't used to them being in demand
they're harder to make (for gold nibs), and if a manufacturer doesn't want to absorb that labor they might just not offer it
this is something that's changing as time goes on though, it's getting better but still isn't an assumed nib offering all the time"

This all sounds pretty spot-on, but I'd like to add my opinion too. In Europe, fountain pens are super common. In America, people who use fountain pens are actively seeking out something new and different. While fountain pens are crazy cool by themselves in America, a stub nib adds something different and exciting to your writing. In Europe, you're just using a fountain pen to write and not thinking anything of it. In America, you really have to be into the hobby to invest in fountain pens, so those of us "in the hobby" will buy cool hobby things, like stub nibs or shimmer ink. Also, I use pretty much exclusively stub nibs.

I know I'm not the most avid buyer, but I got all my stubs from Goulet, and I found out I really like the 1.1 stub. Finer than that would be good too, still need to try Pilot's 1.0 and Nemosine's 0.6 and 0.8, but I really got a passion for stubs, since the ~1.0-1.1 mark really works well with notebooks, cheap or good paper, it simply works for everyday writing. So, yeah, count me in in wanting more stubs from more manufacturers.

Stubs are kind of my second choice when a flex nib isn't offered. I've passed on a lot of pens that looked interesting because they were only offered with nails. Working in the US, my company just buys the cheapest paper it can find so I've become accustomed to buying my own paper; nice stuff for personal use and bagasse for work use. One of our IT contractors brought me back a couple packs of Royal Bond laid paper the last time he went back to India. Dirt cheap, and takes ink beautifully. I will say this for my stubs though, being a recent adopter, they do allow me to get some visible line variation at a smaller size than my modern flex pens.

I love my 3 Nemosines with the 0.6mm stub nib. I think I'm developing a problem.

"I think I'm developing a problem." I said the EXACT same thing as I fell into the rabbit hole....it's not a problem any more because....well, it is what it is.

A little note on the importance of handwriting in Europe. For us in Luxembourg, 20 years ago, and today still, it is mandatory for pupils to write with a fountain pen, especially when they are younger, mostly when they are in Elementary School. We were actually punished when we didn't write with a fountain pen in class. In secondary schooling the use of roller pens increases (mostly for speed), but still many continue to use fountain pens. It was a surprise to hear that it actually wasn't the case in the US.

I just adore stub nibs and just like you, I feel my handwriting gets to a higher zone when I write with a stub nib. 1.1 is the perfect stub size. Pilot offers a 1.0 one which is also great but 1.1 is just a bit better. TWSBI stubs are pretty good but rather inconsistent. The Pilot experience has been the best thus far. (Note that I have no experience with the $100+ pens at all yet, so my take may not be all-relevant)

After buying a Goulet 1.1mm stub nib I learned I absolutely love stub nibs! I had a Twsbi eco 1.1mm stub before the Goulet, but its nib is much smaller than a #6 and so the 1.1mm of the twsbi is definitely a bit smaller than the 1.1mm Goulet. My handwriting in rather small with a japenese medium being on the edge of too large for me, but the 1.1 is just so beautiful and effortlessly caligraphic I adore it!

Over the weekend I ordered the Monteverde Impressa 0.7mm stub nib. This will be my first stub nib. I am looking forward to trying it out. I hope I like it. *Update. I received my pen yesterday. It is a really beautiful pen. I received a complement on my pen last night, “That’s a nice pen.” I am however, not seeing much of a stroke variation while writing. I will continue to work with it and invest in higher quality paper.

Just starting out in fountain pens, would love myself some stubs and flex nibs - unfortunately ordering from Goulet doesn't make much sense for me, as I'm in Germany and the shipping costs are quite high. Great videos though, very informative

Yeah! I only use stubs & italics and I would buy dozens more if I could get the right nib or didn’t always have to replace the nib.

(Just the opposite for me)I was wondering why more pen manufacturers don't offer Ultra Extra Fine nibs......oh well. That Platinum 3776 Century with an UEF really did it right (or is it write?).

@@mirageinthedesert5448 The majority of my nibs are fine or extra fine. When I got the Platinum 3776 Century with the UEF, I thought to myself, "Yeah, THIS is how it is done!" It fits my hand style of writing....which is small and controlled. But I get along with the other fines nibs too and write just as well with them. I can tolerate medium nibs but that is as large as I like to go when it comes to writing.

Randy Howitzer When I got my 3776 UEF I would practice writing as small as I could with it still being legible. That needle nib can get small enough to need a magnifying glass, lol.

All three of my TWSBI pens (Vac 700, 580ALR, Eco) are 1.1mm stub nibs. I've also acquired a number of broad nibs since Rachel's concerted effort to promote them. With all of the awesome inks we have to play with the finer nibs just can't bring out the various attributes they have for the most part. But I still buy and use them also.

I’m getting the vac in a 1.5mm stub nib! I have two TWSBIs the eco t and diamond 580 in 1.1 stub nibs. The diamond gives me troubles with the shimmer ink but the eco t works great.

I'm new to FP's and am not sure what you mean by stub pens, because I thought that a fine or extra fine was (in most cases) a stub pen. When you say stub are you talking about a medium and when you say fine is it still a stub pen? Sorry about the amount of questions, but I love FP's and want to understand the video to the fullest. Love the videos!

It's usually a broader nib that offers line variation depending on the stroke (horizontal vs vertical). This video has all you need to know about stub nibs! (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9KeipeV2pebYGg.html ) - Colin

Just wondering, is there a point in getting relatively finer stub nibs? Most of my pens have EF nibs, which I'm perfectly happy with. The only "stubby" pen I own is the Pilot Plumix. Would, say, a 0.5mm or even 0.4mm stub be feasible, or would the line variation be too insignificant to notice?
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 5 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of the thinner stubs! Using both the Plumix and Nemosine under 1.0mm stubs, you still get a bit of line variation. It's not as dramatic obviously, but does look nice! - Colin

I really want a Lamy 2000, but I also need that stub or flex nib. I keep hoping they offer an option with nice line variation possibilities. Any news on that front?
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 4 жыл бұрын
The Oblique nibs on the LAMY 2000 offer a slight line variation that a stub would, but nothing too drastic. Flex wouldn't work with the hooded nib, but a custom grind is a definitely possibility if you wanted a full stub nib. - Colin

Where I work there are focused on the environment and they use recycling paper. Holy leakage! This paper SUCKS (up a lot of ink). Some pages are "okay-ish"... A TWSBI EF shows through a bit. And literally the next page is so bad, that even an TWSBI EF (even reversed) bleeds through. I think I need to get a Platinum #3776 UEF... But in the NibNook the UEF looks similar to the TWSBI Mini EF. Are they pretty close together? (What I doubt) Or does it just appear that way?

I have a Platinum 3776 Fine, and it is finer than my Pilot Metropolitan Fine for sure, so IMO a Platinum UEF should help you. I got a Platinum Preppy in Fine, and the experience is surprisingly similar to the (much) more expensive pen, so you might try a Preppy before a 3776. Hope this helps!
@herrkeks8509

It actually helps quite a bit... But I would probably go directly for the UEF. Do have a TWSBI EF or a Lamy EF flying around somewhere? How does your F compare to them. It should definitely be finer than a Lamy EF.
@kimlindseyOH
@kimlindseyOH 5 жыл бұрын
I don't have a TWSBI yet, but it's next on my list & there's a pen show coming up next month near me (yay!). The section shape on the lower-end Lamy pens doesn't work for my left-handed grip, so I'll probably never know about them since I'm more drawn to Pelikans for anything above a lower price range. (And as you'd expect, the Pelikan F is a bit broad for me - next time I'll go with their EF.) Good luck on your fine nib quest!! :-)

What is the difference between broad and double broad nibs and stub nibs?🤔
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 3 жыл бұрын
double broad is just...well, broader than broad. Very few companies offer them these days. I would say most broad nibs are around .8mm in diameter at the tip, double broads might be closer to 1.0mm. Stubs are altogether different, they're actually ground more like the shape of a rectangle than a circle, to write thinner on the cross stroke and thicker on the downstroke. They're often wider, like 1.1mm, 1.5mm, and wider. -Brian

how should I clean my neglected dried out pens?
@Gouletpens

Depends on the pen & ink. But if you can disassemble and let the parts soak in warm water, that should loosen up any dried ink. If it's a permanent ink, you may need to use some pen flush as well. - Colin
